Modification of expandable polystyrene beads
This paper presents the effect of modification of expandable polystyrene beads (PSB) with an additional amount of physical blowing agent and the addition of ethylene wax on their properties. Three different sizes of PSB beads were analyzed. The bulk density and thermal properties – thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry were evaluated
The features of snow loads on building roofs
In this paper the probabilistic model of the snow accumulation on the roofs with height discontinuity was worked out, the decreasing coefficient for the snow load weight was received and the ways of their application in the designing were elaborated. The probabilistic model for impulse stochastic process of snowfall sequence was developed. Data from meteorological stations in Ukraine allow determination of statistical characteristics: average annual snowfall amount and exponential distribution of values of one snowfall. The law of intensity distribution of snow melting has been determined experimentally. The territorial zoning map of Ukraine by characteristic values of the snow load on the roofs that emanate heat was developed
Influence of car wheel suspension parameters on improvement of active safety and ride comfort
This paper deals with the simulation of car suspension parameter impact on the contact between the tyre and an uneven road. The simulation was based on the quarter car vehicle model used for the analysis of vertical vibrations of sprung and unsprung mass under the influence of discrete road unevenness. The parameters of the model relate to the front axle of a VW Passat B5. Suspension and damping characteristics were described by non-linear functions. The results included in the paper cover the influence of changing the rebound damping force, main spring stiffness coefficient and the unsprung mass on active safety and ride comfort
Hardware-in-the-loop simulator for testing wind turbine generators
This paper presents research issues of electric generators using systems of the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) type. Using the HIL system, it is possible to reproduce the actual operating conditions of wind turbines working with different types of generators in a laboratory environment.m This approach easily and economically allows analyzing the hardware and software controlling the operation of the generator. This system has been implemented on the sbRIO National Instruments controller cooperating with regenerative frequency converter with DTC control of ABB. The paper presents all the components of this system and discusses their operation
Architectural work output ‒ space presentation forms
Great masters expressed their architectural thoughts through lines drawn by hand on sheets of tracing paper. Will the new technology in the form of parametric design tools, computer models, 3D pens and spatial printing become a distinctive feature of our times? A concept presented in the form of an architectural design becomes most valuable when it is put down on paper through soul and hand, like a violinist transferring a melody to the strings with a sensitivity of an author. In spite of the development of computer technology, at the stage of impressive concept designing there is an even greater need for the return to hand-drawn designs. In view of electronic media, it shows a high quality of the architect’s technique, original and individual approach and specific value of handmade creation
Post-structural games of architecture
The play of architectural emblems that is cited in the conference thesis often seems to lead to a revaluation of the visual realm of architecture. This text therefore deliberately manipulates the concept of post-structuralism as a general cultural trend, avoiding reference to any architectural styles. The author, however, attempts to draw up a classification of post-structural architectural games, including the interdisciplinary
Composite action of precast hollow core slabs with structural topping
There is no interface reinforcement in composite floors made of HC slabs covered with structural topping. In such structures, the preparation of the top surface of the precast element has a major influence on longitudinal shear strength. The recommendations of various codes concerning the bearing capacity of the non-reinforced joint in concrete composite structures are presented in this paper. The results of the authors’ own computational analysis have been compared with the results of experimental tests carried out by different research institutions. Calculations according to Eurocode 2 underrate the value of the bearing capacity. A much stronger conformity of the results was achieved for the calculations carried out according to previously existing standards or according to information given in Model Code 2010
The reduction of educational hours of the fine arts at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology as a result of changes in regulations on higher education
The article presents the changes that have taken place in the educational program in the field of fine arts at the Silesian University of Technology Faculty of Architecture since the 90s of the twentieth century to the present. They were caused by the new laws and rules relating to higher education, adapting it to the requirements of the European Union. There was a reduction of some courses of art and number of teaching hours while increasing the size of student groups Observation of change leads to the impoverishment for aesthetic sensitivity and artistic skills of students, which is essential in communicating your design ideas. The results of analyzes were obtained on the basis of participant observation of teachers lecturing on the above mentioned subject
Analysis of mechanical effects of low- and high-frequency temperature changes in a massive concrete dam
The numerical simulation of time evolution of thermal and mechanical fields in a selected section of a massive concrete dam was undertaken by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) using 3D modelling. Low- (i.e. with time period – year) and high frequency (i.e. with time period – day) cycles of environment temperature variation were considered. The results of the computation confirmed the hypothesis of the vulnerability of the structure to thermal influences and explained the mechanism of the structural defects observed
Alexander Brodsky – play with architecture
Drawing serves as a basic tool for recording and immortalizing the original visions of an architect. The architecture so presented is free from any restraints and may express fantasies and dreams of all sorts. Such acts can be referred to as playing with architecture. But is it only playing with architecture or does the imaginary, visionary paper architecture carry deeper meanings? The article presents selected motifs form Alexander Brodsky’s works
