Drawings and realizations in the architecture of Józef Pius Dziekoński
On the basis of Józef Pius Dziekoński’s projects: a house for the Industrial “Saturn” Society officials in Czeladź (1907), transformer building for the “Saturn” mine in Czeladź (1907), the administration building for the “Saturn” Society in Czeladż (1910), industrial architecture that is not just a package for technology, but creates a new aesthetic and functional qualities, is shown. Such architecture also provides added value to the technology. Analysis of the projects can lead to the conclusions that the work of architect can create the origins of new concepts, ideas and styles
Centres in suburban zones – the form and accessibility
The dynamic growth of suburban zones in recent years has revealed a considerable diversification of functionalspatial structure of these areas, which is the result inter alia of local conditions, including the scale of the previously existing development. To a certain extent, the growth potential of suburban areas depends on whether they are ready to change and adapt to new functions. Some of them are locations housing diversified functional complexes which may in the future become a new form of ‘a suburban zone centre’. Of course, they must fulfil certain criteria of an attractive form and accessibility, but also of a certain functional specialisation adjusted to the specific character of a given place, its surroundings and the target user group. The aim of this article is to show a certain trend in developing some selected areas of the suburban zone – constituting the centres of various economic activities, which will allow identification of the most characteristic tendencies in their location, size, function and form
The architecture of solid and retractable roofs
One element that impacts the visual perception of retractable roofs is their geometrical construction. A quest to find new and attractive forms for buildings’ roofs presents a challenge for architects and designers. In this study, an attempt has been made to classify the roofs in terms of their architectural form. The roofs covered in the research are solid as well as moveable. Solid roofs are divided into three categories i.e. plane, curvilinear and freeform. Two criteria apply when classifying retractable roofs. One is the type of motion that the roof is performing (rotational and sliding) and the other is the type of material that roof panels are made from (roofs with rigid and variable panels)
Scaffolds for tissue engineering
The paper presents the current trends in medicine of regenerative tissue defect caused by resection of tumors or fractures. Although it is a relatively young field of science, it creates new possibilities for the reconstruction of pathologically altered tissue with the use of three-dimensional scaffolds. Tissue engineering places particular emphasis on the type of scaffold from which they are made because of a number of requirements of medical materials including biocompatibility, mechanical strength and porosity

The laboratory studies of pesticides involves a number of ways and methods. It has become especially important nowadays when pesticides is common for people to use. The increasing risk of these chemicals has forced the Legislating Authorities in France to set up recommendations on the use of pesticides and established Ecophyto 2018 program. This paper and research are the part of an interdisciplinary project funded by CPER (Contract between the State and Region), FEDER and the Région Auvergne. The objective of this research is to characterize the fate of 3 herbicides (tembotrion, S-metolachlor, nicosulfuron) belonging to different chemical families on soil from Limagne region in France. The author have performed the experiments with the dry samples of soil which were polluted in the laboratory by spraying pesticide solutions. The work focused on one of the main processes governing the adsorption on surface of solid phase. The results of the research shown that the impact of pesticides is greatly dependent on their family origin as well as on the environmental conditions and the type of soil. Further studies have to be carried out to better understand actions and behaviour of the pesticides in the soil
Is it still worth thinking with hands?
Three tendencies which go far beyond the narrowly understood technological issues seem to currently coexist in contemporary architectural practice. Some architects continue to regard hand drawing as being of primary importance at all stages of professional education as well as of the actual design process. Others, relying on the sensitivity and knowledge developed by their own personal experience with drawing, have accepted new technologies – perceiving the computer as an additional useful tool. At the same time the number of architects and students of architecture, for whom the era which preceded the information revolution constitutes a very distant past and the “analog” methods of imaging are pure exoticism, is continually on the increase. Trying to convince the skeptical representatives of the generation which has from the very beginning been shaped by digital media of the numerous benefits which can be derived from hand drawing – no doubt constitutes a fascinating challenge
The influence of superstructure stiffness on internal forces distribution in raft foundations
The article presents the changes in designing rules of raft foundations according to Eurocodes in relation to structural stiffness of: superstructure–foundations–soil. The results from two numerical models (wall-type and slab-column superstructure) were analyzed. The subject of the analysis was to assess the influence of the raft foundation effective stiffness and Winkler’s spring constant on internal forces distribution in the foundation
The changes in 19th century European hospital architecture. Selected examples
In their long history, hospitals have undergone numerous transformations, both in terms of function and organization, as well as architecture and space. At first they served as shelters for pilgrims, the homeless and the ailing poor. It was not until the turn of the 18th century and 19th century that they began to be understood as organized public institutions devoted solely to the purpose of curing the sick. At the same time, first European clinics began to emerge, which combined the didactic function of universities of medicine with the medicinal function of an ordinary hospital. Until today, there have survived the majority of 19th century European hospital buildings. Many of them still boast a clear composition of spatial structure and valuable forms of architectural detail. Development in medicine, however, has brought about an evolution in health care and consequently functional and spatial programs of hospitals have also began to change. Today, many historical European hospitals experience substantial problems connected with the adaptation to new requirements in terms of equipment necessary in modern-day medicine. The selection of an appropriate waste management system for the city of Zabrze using multi-criteria analysis
Finding solutions for regional waste management systems is task that requires difficult decisions. This paper presents and evaluates alternative solutions to this problem using the example of solution of this system by an example of the waste management in Zabrze. These strategies were assessed using measurable economic, environmental and social criteria. Subsequently, by using multi-criteria analysis for evaluating various aspects, the most favorable variant in terms of compromise was selected. This solution concerns the expansion of the existing waste sorting plant in the city through the addition of elements of mechanical-biological waste treatment. This option does not provide for the construction of installations for waste incineration
