Konsep Iman, Kufur Dalam Perspektif Ilmu Kalam

Ilmu Kalam is a discipline in Islam that discusses theological aspects, particularly concerning the concepts of faith (iman) and disbelief (kufr). This issue first emerged in the debates of the Khawarij, who declared major sinners as disbelievers. It later developed into a major discussion among various Islamic theological sects such as Murji'ah, Mu'tazilah, Asy'ariyah, and Maturidiyah. Each sect holds different views on the definitions of faith and disbelief, as well as the role of reason and revelation in understanding belief. Using a literature review method, this study aims to understand the conceptual differences in faith and disbelief from the perspectives of various Islamic theological sects. The study findings indicate that the concept of faith in Islam is broadly divided into two main understandings: faith as affirmation (tasdīq) and faith as action (‘amal). These differing perspectives have implications for the understanding of the status of major sinners and the relationship between reason and revelation in attaining theological truth

Islamic theology developed in various schools, among which the most influential were the Mu'tazilah and Shi'a. The Mu'tazilah emerged in the 8th century AD with an emphasis on rationality in understanding religion. They emphasized the principle of God's justice (al-'adl), human freedom, and the rejection of forced destiny. The Mu'tazilah teachings considered reason as the main instrument in understanding God's revelation, and they rejected practices that were considered irrational. Meanwhile, the Shi'a developed with a primary focus on the concept of Imamah, which taught that only the descendants of Ali ibn Abi Talib had the right to lead the Muslim community. This difference caused a major split in Islamic history regarding who had the right to lead the community after the death of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, and the Shi'a continued to grow rapidly, especially in Persia, and became the majority school in Iran to this day
