    Impact of Partial Update on Denoising Algorithms of ECG Signals

    This work aims to propose and study the effects of partial update procedure on various ECG denoising algorithms. The partial update algorithms are applied to overcome different types of noises such as Power-Line Interference (PLI), Baseline Wander (BW), Electrode Motion artifacts (EM) and Muscle Artifacts (MA). The impact of partial update (PU) on multiple algorithms and spatially adaptive filters and multi-layer Neural Network (NN) are studied and demonstrated. The performance of different algorithms are evaluated by measuring the Signalto-Noise Ratio after cancellation (Post-SNR), the Mean Square Error (MSE) and the Percent Root Mean Square Difference (PRD%)

    Performance Enhancement for LTE-A Networks Using Small Nodes

    Long Term Evolution- Advanced (LTE-A) is the succeeding version of LTE system to enhance capacity and coverage. Multi-hop relay is one of technologies supported by LTE-A, which aims to enhance the cell-edge capacity. Multi hop technologies are categorized into a fixed relay node (FRN) and a moving relay node (MRN). This paper proposes a system model, which improves the capacity and throughput by employing moving and fixed relay coupled with half-duplex mode. It was expected that the MRN installed on the top of vehicles improves the capacity and throughput for vehicular users when the vehicles move at high speed, while FRN deployed far from BS enhances the coverage at cell edge. Amplify and forward (AF) and decode and forward (DF) protocols were used with these two types of relays. Furthermore, the relay channel and amplification gain were derived in this paper to get the maximum advantage via multi-hop technology. Simulation and analytical results show an increase in the throughput from 1.8Mbps to 3.7Mbps for 35 users after employing the MRN on moving vehicle. Furthermore this value improved to 4.1Mbps after employing the MRN within a LTE-A cell coupled with FRNs deployed around BS, according to the proposed location

    Power Factor Improvement in Power System with the Integration of Renewable Energy

    The non-linear constant increment of power demands due to loads caused a complexity in the operation of the power system network and might also cause insecurity without adequate control in the system with large power flows. A successful alternative energy source gives new challenges when connected to the power grid system. It is however that with the presence of environmental conditions, there is a constant fluctuation of generated power from renewable energy sources. This can be explained when wind power is used as a source of injection into an electric grid, where the power quality will be affected due to the fluctuating condition of the nature of the wind and comparatively new types of its generators panel. Power system control is introduced in this matter using a controller known as FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System). FACTS controllers such as STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) and SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) can function to be a terminal voltage regulator to the power system and consequently improve the systems’ stability and power quality. With the usage of IEEE 14 bus power system network, both the potential STATCOM and SSSC are measured using the controller at high influential locations of the power system

    Mining Vibrational Effects on Off-line Handwriting Recognition

    An individual’s handwriting exhibits variation under external factors, such as writing surface, writing pen, and writing force. Recent studies on handwriting recognition emphasised on interpretation techniques using feature extraction, pattern recognition, and classification approaches. However, no study has evaluated the effects of external source vibrations on handwriting patterns. Hence, this study analyses offline handwritings features on two conditions: with vibrational (V) and without vibrational (N) stresses using the data mining approach. The goal was mainly to recognise individual handwriting features characterised by vibrational conditions. This research was performed on experimental and public offline handwriting databases consisting of English phrases written under (V) and (N) conditions. Vibrational stresses impact was simulated with Mondial Slim Beauty Fitness Massager strapped onto the writing table and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patient with hand tremor symptom. Nine handwriting size metrics with demographic data were extracted as the data attributes. PART and J48 classification algorithms in Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) tool were employed on cross-validation and full training set modes to classify the handwriting data into two predefined classes: (V) and (N). Further significant attributes that distinguish data classes were examined on the decision list and tree diagram constructed from PART and J48. Findings showed that size of “short” letter and “tail” letter were dominant to determine handwriting classes at accuracies: 55.3%- 66.7% (crossvalidation) and 86.0% - 100.0% (training set). The study suggests that the size of “short” letter and “tail” letter are the dominant features to distinguish between the (V) and (N) handwriting

    Rapid Prototyping of Wireless Image Transmission for Wildlife (Tiger) Monitoring System - A Preliminary Study

    This paper proposes a rapid prototyping of wireless image transmission for wildlife monitoring system on Raspberry Pi. In this study, inputs based on the motion of surrounding activities were detected using a motion sensor and camera. The system is configured to capture frames in real-time of these activities and analysed using computer vision system toolbox available in MATLAB & Simulink. A Raspberry Pi that equipped with Broadcom BCM2836 system on chip (SoC) with processor performance of 900 MHz 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 acts as a brain with a graphical user interface (GUI) that configures the systems and its peripheral. Images were transmitted to the host computer using Wi-Fi 802.11n (2.4GHz) transmission. Results obtained show that the proposed system capable of capturing and processing various size of images. Transmitted images have been through various processes, and finally, the decompressed images were obtained via the host computer

    Efficient Operation of Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on GPV-Forecasted PV Output

    Load forecasting is essential in order to fulfil a demand of the consumer. Nevertheless, for a small-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) based on sole photovoltaic (PV), it needs a very strong effort to always meet a consumer's demand due to unstable meteorological conditions. An ideal PV system requires a constructive control strategy in order to alleviate its fluctuating output. In this study, an energy control scheme that executes next-day forecast of generation for the purpose of fully utilizing the stored energy in the batteries has been proposed. Experimental equipment was structured and the operation was completely administered by RX621 microcontroller. The implemented system worked very well without any distractions and it succeeded in controlling and preventing the batteries from being over-charged or overdischarged. Impressively, average consumption for September 2015 is considerably high, which suggests that the proposed control succeeded in utilizing energy corresponded to 98.6 % of the monthly-average generation

    Travel Planning Application: Combining Linear Programming and Shortest Route Problem to Optimize Travelers’ Satisfactions

    Travelers around the world use mobile applications to plan their holiday trips. However, none of the existing applications in the market is capable of optimizing satisfaction of a trip which travelers have different genders and various interests. This research proposes theoretical foundation for mobile application developers to create an application personalized for travel couples. A good trip for a couple is made of shared interests of both travelers. However, places and activities that are interesting for women may not satisfy men’s interests and vice versa. Variables such as time, budget, stamina, satisfaction of a male traveler, and satisfaction of female traveler factors to the constraints of the trip. By using the variables as mentioned above, the model is developed with the objective to maximize satisfaction of the trip while balancing the interests of both genders. The shortest path models, both forward and backward routes, are combined with linear programming to set the constraints. The results of the simulation are applicable. The couple gets a solution for travel spots to visit, transportation route, money and time used for transportation, money and time used for visiting places, as well as the total satisfaction of both travelers

    Model of Hyperthermia Therapy in Melanoma Treatment: Comparison between Constant and Temperature Dependent Blood Perfusion Rate

    This work deals with the modeling of hyperthermia therapy for melanoma skin cancer by considering 3D nonlinear Pennesbioheat transfer equation with Temperature Dependent Blood Perfusion Rate (TDBPR). The proposed model consists of a five-layer biological skin medium with third stage melanoma tumor utilizing each layer by Pennesbioheat equation. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in bioheat transfer model is employed and the result of nonlinear model in the time domains is solved using COMSOL Multiphysics. The variables of heat fluxes as control variables were applied to the proposed model for verification and assessing its applicability and effectiveness. The simulation output shows that the proposed model is valid under our test variable. This proposed model is used to easily and accurately study the thermal behavior of the biological skin during hyperthermia treatment procedure

    Fruit Recognition Using Surface and Geometric Information

    One of the interesting topics in image processing and computer vision is Fruit Recognition. The computer vision strategies used to recognise fruits rely on four basic features which are colour, texture, size and shape. In fruit recognition, unrecognised fruit images are caused by different factors. These factors are different illuminations, specular reflections, and different poses of each fruit, variability on the number of elements, and cropping or occlusions. This paper proposes and aims an efficient and effective way to recognise fruits regardless of the said factors by combining the four basic features of the fruit. Fruit recognition involves different processes which are pre-processing, feature extraction, recognition and testing. The recognition is done using the K-Nearest Neighbor based on statistical values of the colour moments, Gray Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GLCM) features, area by pixels for the size and shape roundness. The fruit images comprised of 2633 fruit images from 15 different kinds of fruits. The authors tested different classifiers which are KNN, Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree, and bagging to know what best fits for the images. After testing the classifiers based on the 2633 images, results showed that KNN outperformed the other classifiers. The result showed that combining all the features namely colour, texture, size and shape, the overall recognition rate for all classifiers has increased and it has shown the best output

    Modelling and Force Tracking Control for Newly Type Configuration of Magneto-rheological Damper

    The objective of this paper is to model hysteresis behaviour of new MR damper configuration by using nonparametric model approaches. The approaches are nonparametric linearised data-driven (NPLDD) single input model, non-parametric linearised data-driven (NPLDD) double input model, and simple polynomial model. The modelling is developed to ensure the force of MR damper is tracked to any input force. The NPLDD model is developed based on look-up table while the polynomial model is developed based on curve fitting from the experimental results and consists of a pair of subsystems namely positive and negative acceleration which corresponds to the upper and lower curves. From the simulation results, the NPLDD double input model shows better performance in describing non-linear hysteresis behaviour of the MR damper compared with others. By using the NPLDD model, a force tracking based on PI controller has been developed. It is verified that the NPLDD model together with the PI control strategy has the capability to track the desired damping force well
