CFD STUDY OF A MICRO AIR VEHICLE (MAV)

Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) is new type of aircraft technology that is maturing day by day and have recently reached unprecedented levels of growth. MAV is small in size and provides  enormous potential in many applications, both for military and civilian use. There are three types of MAV, namely rotary wing, flapping wing and fixed wing. Due to the small size, MAV faces difficulty to fly properly due to the atmospheric perturbations. This study aims to model a suitable fixed wing MAV using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to investigate the lift coefficient, drag coefficient and lift to drag ratio when MAV is used in pertubed flow conditions. When there is wind disturbance, the simulation results show that the lift and drag coefficient for several angle of attack changes. However, the lift to drag ratio seems unaffected. Results showed that MAV is best operated at 8° angle of attack as it provided the maximum lift to drag ratio for situations without and with the present of wind disturbances. The fluid dynamics behavior of flow around MAV are also discussed accordingly. Even though MAV is small in size, it is found that vortex or vorticity flow also exist in MAV, especially at high degree angle of attack

Characterization of Cotton Fiber Filled Polyvinyl Alcohol Films

Petroleum based polymer films have high resistance toward degradation and bring about countless environmental problems where there are a lot of obstacles and restraint causes inadequacy of recycling, contributing to accumulation of terrific waste.  To counter the low degradability of plastic waste, it can be conquered with the development of biopolymer by adding organic fibers, which makes the films to be more biodegradable.  In this study, cotton fiber filled polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were prepared with various cotton fibers loading, which are 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt. % in 20g, 25g and 30g of PVA.  Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis discovered that both cotton fiber and PVA were hydrophilic in nature and confirmed that there was no chemical interaction formed between cotton filler and PVA matrix. This study is aimed to highlight on the tensile properties, hardness and thermal stability of the PVA/Cotton fiber blended films.  Moreover, the investigation on the surface morphology and surface fracture of the blended films were conducted by using scanning electron microscopy.  Based on the result obtained, PVA/ Cotton blended films with higher cotton fiber loading demonstrated lower tensile strength and elongation at break due to the weak intermolecular bonding between the cotton fiber and the PVA matrix. However, the tensile modulus was improved gradually as the increment of cotton fiber loading those results in stiffer blended films as compared to pure PVA film.  Hardness value of the PVA/Cotton fiber shows a significant boost when cotton fiber is added as filler into the PVA matrix as well.  Besides, thermal stability of the blended films also shows a minute improvement as the cotton fiber loading increases

This paper presents the design and construction of a system for a busy parent that will monitor the condition of the infant whether crying or not as well as pacify the baby by rocking and regulating the nearby temperature. The system transmits the baby’s cry in real time to a receiving device which is with the parent, a wooden cradle incorporated with a DC motor pacifies the baby when a sound signal is received. A temperature sensor is also used to monitor the nearby temperature and send the signal to microcontroller which actuate the fan ON/OFF as programed. The system could transmit the baby’s cry in real-time up to 40 meters away from the receiving device. The system also oscillates at 15o when the system is loaded up to 12kg and the load has no effect on the frequency of oscillation.

    No full text
Hydroponic cultivation is one of the common modern farming systems. The effectiveness of the agricultural system refers to the appropriate environmental factors that can be controlled such as temperature, humidity, light intensity, and concentration of solutions that support the growth of cultivated plants. Hydroponic farming will develop increasingly as long as it is supported by technological aspects that are able to control the environmental factors automatically. The objective of this research is to come up with a device that can measure environmental factors as indicators of hydroponic farming using a microcontroller-based controller system. The method used is the measurement test method, which consists of testing the parameters of air temperature, humidity, water temperature, light intensity, nutrient concentration, and pump work, which are then reviewed by literature studies. The results showed that the air temperature sensor (DHT11) had an average temperature accuracy of 22.7-25.3 oC, the humidity sensor (RH) had an average accuracy of 50% - 73.6%. Light intensity sensor (BH1750) averaged to 1289 lx. While the solution of height sensor (HC-SR04) was able to read a 25% decrease in solution for 1 week. Moreover, nutrition concentration sensor testing (TDS Probe) provided an accuracy of the average nutritional concen-tration of 1493 ppm for 24 hours
