PROPOSAL OF A MODULAR DESIGN METHOD CONSIDERING SUPPLY CHAIN: COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION BY ENVIRONMENTAL LOAD, COST, QUALITY, AND LEAD TIME
To achieve sustainable consumption and production, designers and manufacturers should provide inexpensive products that create a low environmental load on the user. Accordingly, products and their components should exhibit a modular design, which can be achieved by considering some factors such as future reuse, remanufacturing, and upgrading. Modular design methods primarily focus to reduce the lead time or costs associated with designing an entire family of products. However, resource efficiency is an important consideration associated with reuse as well as with the production and procurement stages of manufacturing. Hence, proper supplier selection is crucial because new products comprise several components and modules supplied by various manufacturers. So, this paper proposes a modular design method and strategy based on supply chain management. Especially, the proposed method evaluates a modular design strategy based on the cost, environmental load in transportation, quality, and procurement lead time. After deriving modular architecture candidates by Design Structure Matrix clustering that divide functionally closer parts into groups, a proposed indicator is used to evaluate the efficiency of the candidates based on the modular architectures and suppliers. This study applies the proposed method to design a laptop computer and derives an appropriate modular architecture and suppliers with respect to each destination
BEST PRACTICES OF OSH COMPLIANCE IN THE SME MELAKA MANUFACTURING SECTORS
Implementation OSH is important in any workplace. This study is focusing on SME Melaka manufacturing sector and in this paper we would like to include the compliance practice as a new parameter in order to improve the number of percentage of an accident in the workplace. There are four components such as understanding; commitment, practice and behavior influence on the improvement of reducing accident case in the workplace towards regulatory compliance. Primary data from 20 S & M manufacturing sector in Melaka was taken to analyse the compliance practices through phone call interview survey. From the analysis, we found that good compliance will reduce accident cases at the workplace. This research highpoints the problems in the Melaka manufacturing sector such the high occupational accidents which are due to the lack of non-compliance of the requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994, Guided Self Regulation Environmental Mainstream Tools (EMT). This study is to promote the practice of OSH at Small and Medium Melaka manufacturing sector through several management practices such as training and safety management, understanding of self-regulation, enforcement and auditing towards compliance practices
Focus Loss While Driving Detection by Using Prior Stage ERP as Baseline
Driving demands a full focus on the road to avoid any kind of unfortunate events. However, it is common to loss focus over time especially on the road with less traffic and long journey. Studies have shown that quiet number of accidents happened due to loss of focus. Hence, this on-going study is to develop a device to detect focus loss while driving. In our preliminary papers, we have shown that loss of focus is associated to the declining of evoked response potential (erp) amplitude over time. However, to determine the significant decline of amplitude is challenging due to inter-variability of individuals. Hence, in this paper, we propose novelty detection approach by using prior stage of recording as baseline to extract focus loss in single trials of erp of respective individuals. Erps of 20 subjects were recorded while driving a simulator car. The obtained results suggest that the proposed approach detects the attention loss successfully but with a delay as few seconds are needed to obtain the baseline. Novelty detection by using prior stage of recording as baseline is promising but improvement need to be done to apply it in real time

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of employer impression (EI) as a moderator variable on employer satisfaction for engineering graduates employability at Malaysia manufacturing industry. For this study, Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) method version 22 have been use to investigate 195 respondent from Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pulau Pinang using questionnaire distribution to the senior management. The statistical method have revealed that EI was significant as the moderator for employer satisfaction to engineering graduates. The result offer important practical implications for applicant’s success in jobs search depend on the EI of skill and engineering graduates’ ability. As far as author knowledge, this study is among the first examining the interactions of EI as the moderatos effect for engineering graduate employability
Simulation analysis for assembly line workstation layout: case study
The paper explores the cost saving projects that have been implemented in an electrical product assembly line, so called subwoofer speaker. Observation has been conducted on 26 workstations which are involved in an assembly line. Group discussion, real time study and simulation analysis have been performed to reduce operational cost. The result shows that the proposed layout was improved at least 22.68% space utilisation in the production area but only able to improve at least 0.56 percent of production rate. The simulation result gave the production personnel to decide the best improvement workstation layout and enhance the participation of employee in cost saving activities while improve production capacity
Design and Operation Strategy for a Grid Connected Micro Power System
The growing demand for a sustainable power system is motivating worldwide interest in alternative technology. The renewable sources are capable of supplying the required energy but are intermittent and location dependent. A micro power system, if optimally designed can be more reliable and cost effective than a single power source. The overall aim of this paper is the design and operation strategy for a grid connected micro power system for reliable and cost effective energy utilisation. The designed micro power system, is made up of three power sources (solar photovoltaic, grid and fossil-fuelled generator), and utilises a microcontroller based system to reliably organise the flow of the hybrid power mix from different sources and battery bank in a costeffectivemanner. The microcontroller was programmed to monitor the DC voltage levels of the battery bank to decide which source powers the load. The results showed that the developed strategy yielded grid energy savings of 66.7%, reliability enhancement of 6.1% and reduction of pollutant emission by 36.7% compared to the conventional strategy. The high energy saving as well as improved power supply reliability of the developed strategy has become increasingly necessary especially in the face of exorbitant power supply rates of the various electric power distribution companies in Nigeria. Moreover, the implementation of the developed operation strategy can make the ecosystem more friendly and clean
Single Input Fuzzy Logic Controller for Liquid Slosh Suppression
The chaotic nature of liquid slosh and the complex fluid dynamic motion in the container makes the traditional model-based control techniques complex and difficult to synthesize in practice. This paper presents investigations into the development of single input fuzzy logic controller (SIFLC) for liquid slosh control. The proposed approach, known as the SIFLC, reduces the conventional two-input FLC (CFLC) to a single input single output (SISO) controller. Two parallel SIFLC are developed for both lateral tank position and liquid slosh angle control. With the purpose to confirm the design of control scheme, a liquid slosh model is considered to represent the lateral slosh motion. The performances of the control schemes are accessed in terms of lateral tank tracking capability, level of liquid slosh reduction and time response specifications. Supremacy of the proposed approach is shown by comparing the results with hybrid model-free Fuzzy-PID controller with derivative filter (PIDF). Finally, it is seen from the simulation results that the proposed control scheme has able to reduce the liquid slosh without unambiguously model the liquid slosh behavior
Design and Modelling of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Photovoltaic for Low Voltage Network using PSCAD Software
This paper presents the design and modeling of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (PV) generator module in PSCAD/EMTDC. The model is useful for simulation studies of grid interface applications. The validity of the PV model developed has been verified using a set of case studies. The output power from the PV module can be controlled through the PI controller. All the simulation study has been done in the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software. The simulation results show that the simulation models are robust with acceptable performance in terms of power sharing between the load and the grid
THE EFFECT OF ASPECT RATIO ON MULTI-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES FILLED EPOXY COMPOSITE AS ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE ADHESIVE
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) filled epoxy resin is a type of Electrically Conductive Adhesive (ECA) that is used as interconnect materials in electronics application. Carbon-based conductive adhesive usually has inferior electrical conductivity to silver but mechanically superior in terms of its bonding integrity. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of aspect ratio on the electrical and mechanical properties of the composite adhesive. The aspect ratio of the two types of MWCNT fillers are of 55.5 and 1666.5. The filler loading for both MWCNTs varies from 5 wt.% to 12.7 wt.%. From the experimental study, the sheet resistance for the ECA with higher aspect ratio is approximately 4.42 kΩ/□ in comparison to only 44.86 kΩ/□ for the ECA with lower MWCNT aspect ratio. Morphological analysis of the ECA showed evidence of MWCNT distribution in the ECA with different diameter size. Nonetheless, the MWCNTs filled epoxy with lower aspect ratio exhibit higher shear strength with a maximum value of 8.08 MPa, in comparison to only 4.68 MPa to that of the ECA with higher MWCNTs aspect ratio, possibly due to the tendency in forming agglomeration of the MWCNT with smaller tube diameter, resulting in weaker interfacial strength
Analysis of Network Traffic Flows for Centralized Botnet Detection
At present, the Internet users are facing the most serious threats considering the malwares have become a powerful tool for attackers. Botnets are one of the most significant malwares. A Bot is an intelligent program run by worms, Trojans or other malicious codes that could perform a group of cyber-attacks on the Internet. Botnets are used for attacks such as stealing data, spam, denial-of-service, phishing etc. A variety of methods and algorithms have been proposed to detect botnets, in which each of them has an emphasis on specific data or methods. Using Netflow data is an effective and agile method compared to other methods in detecting botnets. This research focuses on centralized and HTTP botnets. In the proposed method, we used the hierarchical clustering, XMeans clustering, and rule-based classification. The methods helped to achieve fast and accurate recognition. Hierarchical clustering improved the speed and accuracy rate in the process of separating the flows. The X-Means algorithm led to the highest cohesion inside the clusters and the maximum distance between clusters by choosing optimal K. Using rule-based classification, each cluster with the similar flow is placed in a bot cluster, a semi-bot cluster or a normal cluster. By performing network traffic flow analysis for the proposed method, sets of botnets have been evaluated and the results indicated that more than 95% accuracy in detection. By a minimum overhead, this approach can provide botnet detection with high accuracy and speed
