    The mediating role of moral disengagement: Shaping prosocial and antisocial behaviours in sport and physical education programmes

    Sport and physical education (SPE) settings have the potential to serve as a unique learning context for the healthy, prosocial development of youth. However, SPE participation is also believed to promote moral disengagement and, in turn, antisocial behaviour. Preliminary research has suggested that some youth populations may be particularly vulnerable (e.g., older boys). This study examined the mediating role of moral disengagement in shaping prosocial and antisocial behaviours of youth involved in SPE. The participants comprised 29 PE teacher-coaches (23 males), five sport coaches (all male), and 463 youth athletes (257 males). Findings indicate that, in general, female athletes were less likely to display antisocial behaviour and older athletes were more likely to engage in prosocial behaviour. In fact, among older athletes, moral disengagement could explain occasional antisocial actions. Experienced coaches and the specific type of activity (i.e., physical education or sport co-curricular activities) were also linked to prosocial behaviour. Further analyses highlighted the crucial role of moral disengagement in mediating the relationship between athlete age, birth sex, and antisocial behaviour. Ultimately, schools, coach education programmes, and youth sport organisations should consider implementing strategies designed to promote the inherent value of sport.Accepted versio

    Bruner’s Enactive-Iconic-Symbolic as part of his “theory of instruction” was posited some 60 years ago. The educational research inquiry conducted during this intervening period has uncovered contextual and theoretical complexities that challenge the over-simplicity of a three-stage model. Nevertheless, its modern form, such as Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA), has persisted in the literature and is implemented in classrooms in many parts of the world. This study presents a revisitation of this heuristic, by taking in some of these complexities as they were considered by teachers in a case of teaching Expansion and Factorisation involving quadratic expressions, with a view of strengthening the practical instructional utility of CPA.Accepted versionOER 23/21 TT

    Shared reading in Malay preschool classrooms: Examining monolingual and bilingual strategies in practice

    This study explores the role of bilingual and monolingual shared reading strategies in Malay language acquisition among preschoolers in Singapore. In a context where English dominates both at home and in schools, the effectiveness of monolingual (Malay-only) versus bilingual (Malay-English) reading approaches remains debated. Using classroom discourse analysis, the study examines teacher-student interactions, engagement patterns, and translanguaging practices during shared reading sessions. Findings suggest that although both language separation as described in language policy as well as in contexts of classroom practice is commonplace, translanguaging takes place as a matter of course, aiding comprehension. Teachers’ use of repetition, modeling, and questioning significantly influences vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation. However, bilingual strategies also introduce cognitive load, requiring educators to balance comprehension with Malay immersion. This research is an illustration of a tension that exists between the ideals of language immersion and what is happening in classrooms, and this tension has implications for understanding teacher practices, and what we might consider in Malay language teaching

    Impact narrative: Designing future-ready school libraries for reading engagement and student-centred learning

    A serendipitous visit to a secondary school library during a research study led Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee from the English Language and Literature Department, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, to realise that Singapore school libraries were being under-utilised even as schools sought to promote a reading culture among students. While all Singapore schools were provisioned with school libraries, students were not observed to utilise the informal learning spaces to support their reading needs. This observation resulted in the Building a Reading Culture study (2016-2020) and Designing School Libraries of the Future study (2020-2024), with findings leading to increased attention and resourcing for school libraries in Singapore

    In situ surface manipulation MN-based Prussian blue analogues with enhanced redox chemistry and ion diffusion toward high-energy-density aqueous sodium-ion batteries

    Manganese-based Prussian blue analogues (Mn-PBA) are promising cathode materials for aqueous sodium-ion batteries (ASIBs) owing to their open framework that facilitates efficient sodium ion insertion/extraction. However, their practical deployment is hindered by structural collapse arising from high-spin Mn3+ (HS-Mn3+) dissolution during cycling, triggered by the Jahn–Teller effect, which severely limits long-term stability. Here, we design an in situ chemically regulated Mn@Fe/H-PBA electrode with a hierarchical hollow structure via co-precipitation. The hollow architecture provides a large surface area for enhanced active site utilization, while the stabilized hierarchical framework enriched with low-spin Mn3+ (LS-Mn3+) effectively suppresses structural distortion. Together, these features enable Mn@Fe/H-PBA to deliver a high discharge capacity of 121 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 with excellent cycling durability. In situ/ex situ characterization combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the improved redox activity and mitigated Jahn–Teller distortion. Full cells paired with a polyimide (PI) anode achieve an energy density of 74.32 W h kg−1, while pouch cells demonstrate stable cycling over 500 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work provides a robust strategy to overcome stability challenges in Mn-PBA cathodes for next-generation ASIBs.Accepted versionRI 1/21 EAHRI 3/23 EA

    The learning of Malay language in ASEAN countries

    This literature review highlights the language policies and the learning approaches of Malay Language (ML) in four selected ASEAN countries - Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. These countries have a significant number of ML learners and speakers. Nonetheless, there exist different factors that influence the learning of ML that vary from countries to countries. Therefore, this paper aims to review existing literature related to language policies, education systems and challenges faced by ML learners in different countries. The results of the analysis of 26 existing studies using databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar have identified several differences and similarities between the four countries when it comes to the learning of ML and this serves as a gateway and stepping stone to improve on different areas so as to improve the learning of ML in different ASEAN regions

    Exploring the link between screen time, physical activity, and obesity: Contributing factors and behaviors

    Background: In today’s society, adolescents are increasingly exposed to screen devices. With the rise in childhood obesity cases in Singapore from 11% in 2013 to 16% in 2021(Tham et al., 2023), there is a call that screen time does interplay with physical lifestyle due to the increased usage of screen time in youths.Objective: This study aims to explore the connection between screen time and physical activity in adolescents aged 10 to 16 in Singapore. This is to determine whether screen time adversely affects their health and contributes to obesity.Methodology: The study utilised a quantitative approach with a 5-point Likert scale, enabling participants to rate their agreement. The target group included 30 parents (14 males and 16 females) of children ages 10-16. Parents were chosen to provide insights into their children's screen time and physical activity habits.Results and Conclusion: The finalised data showed that excessive screen time significantly reduces physical activity. Combined with unhealthy eating habits due to screen time, this contributes to calorie surpluses, increasing the risk of obesity in children. Multiple factors contribute to this issue, with social devices, poor parental habits, and low levels of physical activity being the most prominent. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach, promoting the importance and effectiveness of leading an active lifestyle
