The Money Consensus: What do people really think of the monetary system? And does it influence ethical decision-making?
Recent experiments have revealed that the mere thought of money can decrease ethical decision-making. This paper explores the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon by investigating how the modern generation feels about the monetary system. Data from US and UK participants revealed that over 80% felt that money is one of the leading reasons why people make unethical decisions. The general consensus included that the invention of money has been mainly bad for the environment, plants, and wildlife, and that humans would have more authentic relationships and be happier and more ethical if money had never been invented. The findings offer valuable insight into why thoughts of money can loosen our morals
Association between birthweight and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in children, a systematic review
BackgroundBirthweight is normally determined by a range of genetic traits and exposures occurring within the intra-uterine environment. Some epidemiological studies have reported high birthweight as a risk factor of Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Other studies have however not demonstrated this relationship.ObjectivesThe objective of this review is to assess the association between birthweight and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in children. Search methods We searched observational studies from Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, BIOSIS, the allied and Complementary Medicine Database and National Research Register, ClinicalTrial.gov, WHO International Trials Registry Platform. Selection criteriaWe included case control and cohort studies assessing the association between birthweight and ALL in children. All particpants below the age of 18 years (children) with ALL were included in the analysis. The independent variable in this review was birthweight. Birthweight was categorised into two (2). Birthweight >4kg (experimental arm) and ≤ (control arm).Data collection and analysisTwo reviewers independently assessed identified studies through two stages of screening. First, titles and abstracts of all references identified through searches were screened and irrelevant studies were excluded. Also, full texts of potentially eligible studies were further assessed according to previously defined inclusion criteria. Studies that did not meet inclusion criteria were excluded and reasons for their exclusion were stated. All studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. Areas of disagreement were resolved by a third-party review. Two review authors double checked the studies independently.Main resultsOut of the 348 studies screened, 16 of them met the inclusion criteria. A total of 3650728 participant provided data for analysis in this review. These studies were published between 1987 and 2018. The age span of studies was similar across studies (roughly (0-18 years). The vast majority of ALL was diagnosed before 15 years. 14 of the included studies were case control studies and 2 of them were cohort studies. Figure 1 presents odd ratio estimates for effect of birthweight on ALL (≤ 4000g vs. > 4000g). There was a statistically significant positive relationship between high birthweight (birthweight > 4000g) and risk of ALL (16 studies, OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.77, 0.85). Authors' conclusionsOur study revealed a significant positive relationship between high birthweight and ALL. Several studies have demonstrated an association between factors such as: high pre-pregnancy weight and height; gestational age greater than 42 weeks; parity greater than and high birthweight. Therefore, public health programs and interventions aimed at reducing the incidence of these maternal factors can reduce the risk of high birthweight and lower the incidence of ALL
Detecting and counting minutiae in human fingerprint
Human fingerprint is unique to every person and can be used easily for identification purposes. People leave fingerprints almost everywhere and that's why using fingerprint databases for investigation is so common. Fingerprints can be used in many important and vital applications: providing vital security, and sometimes fingerprint may be distorted (deformed) because it was taken from somewhere where the place was wood plank, wall or door hand, so we need to enhance the image, in this paper we will introduce LBP enhancement for better minutiae detection and counting, and it will be showed how to construct a fingerprint identifier (features) to be used later as a key to retrieve or recognize the fingerprint
Legal Capital of Enterprise under tha laws of Viet Nam
It can be said that business investment capital is always the most important requirement for investors to enter the market that developing countries in the market economy like Vietnam cannot ignore. But the question is how much minimum capital threshold to allow investors to enter the market is not a simple issue that many countries' business laws must consider to make appropriate adjustments
Approximate analytical solution of linear and nonlinear fractional delay differential equations using new variational iteration method
In this paper, an approximate analytical method, New Variational Iteration Method (NVIM) is introduced in this paper for the approximate analytical solution of Fractional Delay Differential Equations (FDDE). The algorithm is illustrated by studying initial value linear and nonlinear problems. The results obtained are presented and show that only few terms are required to get an approximate solution
Androgen derivatives affect immunopresence but not activity of antioxidant enzymes in pancreatic islets during diabetogen-induced apoptosis
The onset of diabetes mellitus involves oxidative stress. Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that androgens, but not estrogens or progestogens, could prevent the apparition of apoptosis in beta-cell induced by streptozotocin in early stages of diabetes induction in rat; these effect was related with changes in antioxidant enzymes presence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the participation of scavenging enzymes in beta-cells protection under androgen derivatives, and their cytoprotective mechanism. Adult male rats were orchidectomyzed, and treated with androgens after STZ administration. Pancreatic catalase and superoxide dismutase-1 and -2 were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and TUNEL assay. In another experimental focusing, pancreatic islets were obtained from intact male rats, and incubated with alloxan in order to induce ROS production, in the presence of androgen derivatives, and the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were measured in cell lysates. Androgen treatment affects immunopresence of the antioxidant enzymes in pancreas, but not their activity in islets, suggesting that scavenging enzymes could be affected during beta-cells apoptosis
The Avatar Effect: The harmful consequences of decision-making through a 'separate' entity.
As we are in the midst of a global crisis, caused primarily by human activity, it is vital to ask, what leads us to make such ethically compromised decisions? This paper reveals a phenomenon that may cause an individual to loosen or lose their moral compass: the avatar effect. The case is made that there are frequent situations where individuals can make decisions through—what appears to them as—a separate entity, and that through compounding underlying mechanisms, this can result in an increased sense of disconnection, compromised judgement, and harmful consequences
Fire disaster preparedness of public buildings in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria
Fire outbreaks have risen to a worldwide attention in recent years as both an environmental and economic issue. Despite the fact that nothing could be sustainably done to completely stop the occurrence of fire disaster, something could be done to mitigate the spread. This study therefore assessed fire preparedness and mitigation provisions in the events of fire disaster in public buildings in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria. Disaster Preparedness provided the conceptual framework for this study. Cross-sectional survey was adopted in this study. Forty three (43) public buildings and one hundred and eight (108) building users were conveniently selected and sampled. Data were gathered through direct observation and questionnaire administration in selected buildings. Findings showed that banks, social buildings and hospitals were the public buildings more committed to providing and maintaining fire safety equipment. The study also revealed that 51.9% of the occupants of the public buildings have poor knowledge in the operation of fire safety installations. The study concluded by recommending that existing fire safety provisions in building codes should be reviewed and implemented with defaulters punished according to the law. Additionally, public building occupants should be compelled to participate in regular training on fire safety, fire disaster first aid and evacuation procedure
Impact of financial statements for financial decision-making
The study aimed to know the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decisions, and the degree of benefit from them, and to identify what financial statements, what is its importance for the institutions within the framework of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 of ideas and trends, and to identify the contribution of financial statement analysis to financial decision-making. The study was based on the descriptive and analytical approach, and the study population consisted of all financial decision makers. The study was based on a simple random method (70) of financial decision makers. The study was based on the questionnaire and consisted of the following axes (financial statements in companies, financial decision-making, the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decision-making). The study came out with a number of results, the most important of which are: There is approval by the respondents to all paragraphs of the first axis "financial statements in companies", with a relative weight of 82.8%. There is an agreement by the respondents on all paragraphs of the second axis "making financial decisions in companies", with a relative weight of 81.3%. There is strong approval by the respondents on all paragraphs of the third axis "the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decision-making", with a relative weight of 86.4%. The financial statements are a key tool to know the financial position of the company, so they must be accurate and reliable before being published by management. The lack of credibility in the financial statements leads to mistrust in the company by investors, and does not give them the possibility to diagnose and make sound decisions. In light of the previous results, the study recommended the following: • Organizing several forums, conferences and forums to clarify the mechanism of preparing the financial statements and how to analyze them, and the need to raise awareness of financial decision makers about the importance of financial statements in the financial decision-making process
