Unpacking Argumentative Fallacies in Indonesia's 2024 Presidential Debates: A Cognitive-Pragmatic Analysis

    No full text
This study examines the presence of argumentative inaccuracies in the 2023–2024 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential debates through the lens of cognitive linguistics and contextual pragmatics. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were drawn from transcripts of five debate rounds and analyzed using Toulmin's model of fallacies combined with situational context theory. The research identifies five dominant fallacies: evading the issue, argument from ignorance, appeal to authority, ad hominem attacks, and hasty generalizations. Each fallacy is interpreted within its political and situational context—revealing how historical references, ethical deflections, appeals to seniority, lack of mastery, and satire are strategically employed. The findings offer insight into how these inaccuracies diminish the integrity of public political discourse and obscure substantive discussion of policies. Furthermore, the study underscores the critical role of context in shaping the interpretation and reception of political arguments. It contributes to the growing body of work on cognitive-pragmatic approaches in political linguistics, and emphasizes the need for educational efforts to cultivate critical thinking and argumentative literacy among citizens and students alike. This research also suggests practical implications for debate organizers, moderators, and media analysts—calling for clearer standards to reduce manipulative rhetoric in public forums. Future studies are encouraged to apply computational methods to expand this work or examine comparative debate formats across cultures

    No full text
This review research explores some benefits that purposed by the integration of Artificial Intelligence in EFL classroom, mainly in improving students’ engagement and involvement in the learning process so that their anxiety while speaking could be dismissed . Some AI tools that could be used in teaching speaking like Intelligent Tutoring Systems, speech recognition technologies, Chatsbot, Kahoot and AI-based feedback mechanism which encourage students engagement and self-confidence in speaking practice. Research from various experts, such as (Turner & Patrick, 2004), Karim et al., 2023; Kholis, 2021; Samad & Ismail, 2020). Mardhiah, Ainol, et al (2024) show that the integration AI in English learning and teaching could improve the students’ activeness and engagement and allow them to practice more that create the enjoyable learning setting without feeling anxiety.  However, there are some challenges and constraints in applying Artificial Intelligence such as the limitation of natural adaptation and communication in the real context, less direct corrective feedback, and less human interaction. To solve these problems, combining the strengths of AI with teacher traditional methods, offers a richer and more adaptable learning experience that better meets the diverse needs of students

LEARNERS IN THE EFL LEARNING LANDSCAPE OF 2022

    No full text
Adult learners tend to have challenges in learning EFL, and these challenges are more apparent when the adult learners are faced with technologies in 2022. This paper aimed to find out the challenges encountered by adult learners in the EFL learning landscape of 2022 and what technologies are used by language teachers and researchers in order to counteract said challenges and assist the adult learners. The method used in this study is SLR (Systematic Literature Review). There are three journals focusing on challenges and three journals focusing on the solutions done by teachers and lecturers to help adult learners. These journals range from 2021 – 2022 (1 year) and were searched through Google Scholar, Research Gate, and Mendeley search engine. Hopefully the result of this research can be used by fellow language teachers in applying the proper teaching media when teaching adult learners and help them in facing their challenges

POLITENESS IN THE VIRTUAL PUBLIC SPHERE: A PRAGMATIC STUDY OF YOUTUBE COMMENTS ON PRAGERU’S VIDEO: ‘ISRAELIS OR PALESTINIANS – WHO’S MORE TOLERANT?’

    No full text
This research seeks to analyze politeness strategies used by YouTube commenters in response to PragerU’s “Israelis or Palestinians – Who’s More Tolerant?”, a discussion about the contentious Israel-Palestine issue. Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory is the principal theoretical basis, as supported by Herring’s (2004) Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) in order to investigate the way in which digital users manage face, identity, and ideology in online political discourse. A qualitative descriptive approach was used with 100 comments purposively selected between September 2022 and September 2024. Comments were attributed to one of four politeness strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record, and off-record, and interpreted for ideological organizational positioning. The results suggest that positive politeness, which is dominated by pro-Israel users, contributes to creating solidarity and reinforcing group cohesiveness, while negative politeness, which is more noticeable in the pro-Palestinian and neutral comments, downplays conflict and creates social distance. Bald on-record, strategies enable direct ideological claims; off-record strategies (irony, sarcasm) contribute to indirect criticism of other beliefs. The results indicate that politeness strategies in YouTube comments are used as cultural and social resources to manage relationships and express ideas as influenced by anonymity, asynchrony, and the affective dimensions of the medium. This paper draws out the implications of politeness theory online and demonstrates how politeness theory can inform identity construction and discourse polarization in politically sensitive digital environments.

Basic Literacy In Numeracy: Analysis of Misconceptions In Third Grade Elementary School Place Value Material

    No full text
Mathematics, a core subject in schools, is crucial for developing logical and systematic thinking skills. One fundamental concept is place value, which helps students understand the position and value of digits in numbers. Proper understanding of place value is essential for learning more complex mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction, decimal operations, and fractions. However, many students often experience misconceptions about this concept, such as misinterpreting the value of digits. These misconceptions can lead to errors in more complex number operations and reduce students' confidence in their mathematical abilities. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to systematically describe specific objects. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on observations and interviews, it was found that students who experienced careless errors were 13%, concept errors were 9%, and a combination of both types of errors was 9%. Additionally, 6% of students experienced an inability to think mathematically or other learning disorders. Effective educational interventions, such as implementing constructivist learning, can reduce the likelihood of misconceptions. In conclusion, place value is the foundation of learning mathematics, and misconceptions in this area can have significant negative impacts on students. Teachers need to conduct deeper analyses and prepare better strategies to address these misconceptions
