Validation of a Transformative Learning Model Based on Marosok Local Wisdom for Strengthening Students' Entrepreneurial Character
The Marosok tradition is one of the local wisdoms of the Minangkabau culture that upholds the values of honesty, trust, responsibility, work ethic, and empathy. Due to globalization, the Marosok tradition is increasingly unfamiliar to school-aged generations. In fact, this tradition embodies entrepreneurial character values of Minangkabau traders. This study aims to elevate local community traditions as content in Social Studies education (IPS) while also preserving the local wisdom inherited from the Minangkabau society. The objective of this research is to develop a transformative learning model based on Marosok local wisdom and to produce a valid transformative learning model for Social Studies education. This research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method following the Borg & Gall model. Data collection techniques include questionnaires, focus group discussions (FGDs), interviews, and observations. The data analysis technique uses descriptive statistics. The research findings indicate that the development of a transformative learning model based on local wisdom results in seven syntax stages: Bapatuik, formulating essential questions, designing the project, implementing the project, assessing the results, decision-making, and constructing new meaning perspectives. Model validation was carried out in two stages: Focus Group Discussion and expert validation using questionnaires. The FGD stage recommended that the learning model could proceed to the implementation phase with a suggestion to reduce the decision-making syntax stage. The results of the model and learning tools validation by experts in model design, content, language, and practicing teachers indicated an average validity score of 93%, confirming that the transformative learning model based on Marosok local wisdom is valid for school implementation. The conclusion of this study is that the Marosok-based local wisdom learning model has been developed and is valid for use in Social Studies learning at the junior secondary level (SMP/MTs), with the potential to strengthen students’ entrepreneurial characte

Cultural Encounters in the BIPA Classroom: A Cross-Cultural Understanding of International students’ Perceptions of Indonesian Culture
This study explores how international students perceive Indonesian culture while participating in the Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program at Padang State University. Framed within Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU), the study investigates how students’ cultural backgrounds, prior experiences, and exposure to cultural content in language teaching shape their engagement and motivation. Using a descriptive qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation. The findings show that most students positively perceive Indonesian culture, particularly appreciating traditions, hospitality, and food. However, challenges arise with abstract cultural values, such as indirect communication, hierarchical relationships, and concepts of politeness, which sometimes contrast with students' native cultural norms. Students from Southeast Asian countries reported smoother cultural adjustment than those from Western countries. Furthermore, students favored experiential learning—such as field trips, cooking classes, and cultural performances—over theoretical cultural instruction. These insights reinforce the importance of integrating cultural content into language instruction but also highlight the need for culturally responsive pedagogy that considers learners’ diverse cultural frameworks. The study suggests incorporating CCU models (e.g., Byram's ICC Bennett's DMIS) to support intercultural reflection, identity development, and deeper engagement. Future research should explore the longitudinal impacts of cultural learning and implement structured tools to evaluate intercultural competence development
Feasibility Analysis of the Development of the Kepok Banana Flour Industry and Opportunities for Improving Farmer Welfare in Mentawai Islands, West Sumatera
Banana cultivation particularly Kepok bananas, plays a significant role as a commercial commodity in the Mentawai Islands Regency. This study aims to assess the developing a banana flour processing industry in the region by analyzing the commodity's potential, determining suitable locations, and evaluating industrial feasibility. The approach method for the feasibility study of the banana flour industry consists of 1) analysis of the potential of banana commodities in the Mentawai Islands Regency, 2) determination of the location of the banana flour processing industry, 3) feasibility study of the banana flour agro-industry, and 4) recommendations for the feasibility of the banana flour industry in the Mentawai Islands Regency. Several questionnaires were used in the data collection process, including other questionnaires for farmers (62 persons), extension workers (12 persons), trader collectors (6 persons), and stakeholders (representation from 15 institutions). The data obtained were then analyzed using several analyses, including analysis of the current condition of banana farming management, business sustainability analysis, and SWOT analysis. The findings indicate that Kepok banana cultivation in the region is highly favorable, supported by suitable agronomic conditions. Furthermore, the feasibility assessment demonstrates the potential for success across agronomy, technology, processing, management, socio-economic benefits, and administrative aspects. Establishing a banana flour processing industry is expected to optimize the use of local banana resources and generate economic benefits. It is anticipated that these initiatives will not only enhance the efficiency of banana utilization but also improve the welfare of banana farming families in the Mentawai Islands Regency. This study emphasizes the strategic importance of agro-industrial development in empowering rural communities
Dynamics of Agrarian Conflict the Kapa Village Community and PT PHP
ABSTRACT This research is motivated by the agrarian conflict between PT Permata Hijau Pasaman (PHP) and the community of Nagari Kapa, Luhak Nan Duo District, West Pasaman Regency. The conflict, which began in 1997, continues to drag on and has yet to find a complete resolution or a solution that can completely end the problem. The purpose of this research is to analyze the dynamics of this agrarian conflict by emphasizing how the customary land dispute has dragged on. The analytical framework uses Simon Fisher's conflict theory through the Stages of Conflict, which views conflict as a dynamic process ranging from pre-conflict, confrontation, crisis, outcome, to post-conflict. The research approach is qualitative with a descriptive type. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with nine informants, while secondary data came from official documents, government archives, and related literature. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results show that the conflict began with the handover of 1,600 hectares of customary land in 1997 without involving the entire community. The confrontation phase was evident through community rejection of the distribution of plasma land, which was deemed inconsistent with the agreement. The crisis peaked in 2024 when the company replanted land claimed by the community, leading to clashes with authorities. Efforts to resolve the conflict through village meetings, government mediation, and legal advocacy by civil society organizations have yielded no results.
