    No full text
English proficiency plays an important role in higher education, particularly in supporting students’ comprehension of academic materials and problem-solving processes. In mathematics learning at the university level, students are required not only to perform numerical calculations but also to understand problem statements and apply appropriate reasoning strategies. This study aims to examine the relationship between English proficiency and mathematical problem-solving skills among university students. A quantitative research approach with a correlational design was employed. The participants were undergraduate students from the Industrial Engineering program at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI Jakarta, selected using a purposive sampling technique. English proficiency was measured using an English proficiency test focusing on academic reading comprehension and language understanding, while mathematical problem-solving skills were assessed through problem-solving tasks based on established mathematical frameworks. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results indicate a positive and significant relationship between English proficiency and mathematical problem-solving skills. Students with higher levels of English proficiency tend to demonstrate better performance in solving mathematical problems, particularly those involving contextual and language-based descriptions. These findings suggest that English proficiency contributes to students’ ability to interpret mathematical information and apply effective solution strategies. The study highlights the importance of integrating language support into mathematics instruction and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration between English and mathematics lecturers to enhance students’ academic performance and problem-solving skills in higher education. Keywords: English proficiency; mathematical problem-solving skills; university students; Industrial Engineering; correlational stud

THE EFFECT OF ENERGY SUBSIDY AND THE NUMBER OF MOTOR VEHICLES ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN INDONESIA

    No full text
This research aims to analyze the effect of energy subsidies and the number of motorized vehicles on economic growth in Indonesia. The research background stems from the increasing need for energy as a result of population growth, the number of motorized vehicles, and dependence on non-renewable fossil energy. The method used is a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis techniques using secondary data processed with the help of the Eviews 10 and SPSS 21 applications. The research results show that both energy subsidies and the number of motorized vehicles have a positive influence on economic growth, but are not statistically significant. The R-square value of 0.203 indicates that 20.3% of the variation in economic growth can be explained by these two independent variables, while the rest is influenced by other factors. These findings indicate that to encourage higher economic growth, it is necessary to diversify the factors driving growth beyond energy and motor vehicle variables

THE CONTEXTUAL MEDICAL POLITENESS PRINCIPLE: A MINANGKABAU-BASED PRAGMATIC MODEL OF CULTURAL IDENTITY AND LINGUISTIC SENSITIVITY

    No full text
The Minangkabau people are known as a community whose social behavior is still governed by traditional values. These values have a significant impact on how people communicate with one another. Some of the most commonly used values are the use of proper language based on “kato nan ampek,” or four words. The value of “kato nan ampek” means that the Minangkabau people have a four-level system of communication. These traditional values are inseparable from the culture of the Minangkabau people. This way of communicating is applied to all aspects of life, including the medical environment. In this medical environment, language is used in the context of power and intensity of encounters, so that the communication that takes place will influence meaning, respect, and other values that may arise.  This study analyzes linguistic politeness strategies in the medical environment and relates them to Minangkabau cultural identity. Data analysis is explained in terms of Leech's (1983) Politeness Principle and integrated with the branch of intercultural pragmatics, which views politeness as a culturally specific practice rather than a general linguistic phenomenon. This study employs a qualitative research design combining naturalistic observation and thematic discourse analysis to examine interactions between health workers and patients in hospitals in Padang city. The results of the study show that communication among the Minangkabau people in the medical environment is characterized by a strong tendency toward indirect requests, softened commands, and inclusive pronouns, as well as the use of polite forms of address such as “Bapak and Ibu” (Sir and Ma'am). This tendency shows respect and social balance, which can reduce tension between health workers and patients who are consciously not in the same position. The principle of politeness in interactions between health workers and patients in the Minangkabau environment is not only a communicative approach but also one that emphasizes harmonious relationships, relational balance, and ethical considerations. Based on the approach outlined in this communication, the study proposes a new strategy for analyzing the so-called Contextual Medical Politeness Principle (CMPP). CMPP is a development of a previous theory that proves that politeness in medical interactions cannot be separated from the influence of culture and community identity. This principle of politeness is not only a strategy to reduce the risk of losing face, but can also be used as a moral and relational activity rooted in cultural knowledge. This study contributes to the science of linguistic politeness in relation to ethnolinguistics and the moral philosophy of the Minangkabau people. This study shows that the Minangkabau people's communication style is rooted in a regional context that conflicts with the dominant Western paradigm. This study presents a unique pragmatic model of Minangkabau politeness, demonstrating that it is not merely a regional or cultural phenomenon but a broader pragmatic model with implications for comparative research in linguistic politeness, health communication, and sociocultural linguistics in multilingual societies

This research aims to develop a multimodal e-module for creative writing based on South Sumatran local wisdom to enhance writing skills and strengthen the cultural identity of students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. The research method employed Research and Development (R&D) using an adapted ADDIE model up to the Development stage (Analysis, Design, Development). Research subjects included 94 students for needs analysis, 3 expert validators (media, culture, language), and 30 students for practicality testing. The Analysis phase identified gaps in creative writing comprehension (62.77%) and South Sumatran local wisdom knowledge (34.04%). The Design phase produced a structured e-module blueprint with seven learning modules (biography, autobiography, short story, poetry, drama script, folktale, feature) integrating South Sumatran cultural elements such as songket weaving, gending sriwijaya dance, pempek cuisine, Musi River, limas traditional house, and Palembang folktales. The Development phase created an e-module using Canva and FlipHTML5 platforms, featuring a South Sumatran local wisdom inspiration bank, video tutorials, sample works, writing guides, and learning evaluations. Expert validation results showed the e-module was highly valid with an average of 89.65% (media expert 91.50%, cultural expert 87.57%, language expert 86.25%). Practicality test results indicated the e-module was highly practical with an average of 88.29%, with the local wisdom aspect receiving the highest score (90.83%). This research produced an e-module product that integrates creative writing and South Sumatran local wisdom with a multimodal approach for prospective Indonesian language teachers. These findings imply that integrating regional cultural content into digital learning media can simultaneously strengthen students’ creative writing competencies and cultural literacy. The e-module serves as a replicable model for incorporating local wisdom into higher education curricula across Indonesia, with broader implications for culturally responsive pedagogy in teacher education programs
