Soprano Singer NAGAI Ikuko (1893-1983) reported in Three Daily Newspapers in Colonial Korea: Busan Daily, Chosun Newspaper, and Daily Report
This paper aims to describe the 'Singing in Japanese Movement' given by Soprano singer NAGAI Ikuko (1893-1983) in colonial Korea through the daily newspaper articles found in Busan Daily, Chosun Newspaper and Daily Report. In the database of Korean Newspapers, twenty-four articles on her were found in Busan Daily, thirteen in Chosun Newspaper, and five in Daily Report from 1928 to 1932. From their contents, it became clear that her performing tours were supported first by the governmental newspaper Daily Report, and then by non-governmental newspapers such as Busan Daily and Chosun Newspaper. In 1932, NAGAI explained that her Korean tour was the sixth one. The analysis of these articles provides an overview of her Korean tours from the first to the sixth. Programs of her three concerts in Busan and Keijo in October 1930. and in Busan in April 1932 were printed in these newspapers. From their analysis, her program construction became clear, making the section of 'the famous pieces of eight countries' as its central part. It cannot be overlooked that she made it a custom to sing 'Kimigayo' with her audience at the end of her every recital also in colonial Korea. In addition, it was found that she had a connection with NAGAI Ryutaro, a famous politician at that time. The period when she developed her 'Singing in Japanese Movement' (1925-1941) was a time when Japan pushed colonialism strongly towards Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan. In this trend, NAGAI's activities proclaiming cultural nationalism must have had multiple problems as 'a performance of Japanese women's newly gendered identity in multiple publics, and a performance of Japanese people abroad intent on proving their status to their neighbors' (Mari Yoshihara, 2004,976-977).departmental bulletin pape
