Development of an Augmented Reality Application for Surface-Only Visualization of Finite Element Analysis Results

    No full text
Finite Element Analysis is a fundamental tool for simulating the structural response of components under various loading conditions. Traditional visualization methods, typically limited to 2D screens, constrain user interaction and spatial understanding. This work presents a custom surface-only visualization algorithm designed for immersive exploration of FEA results in Augmented Reality. The algorithm focuses on extracting and displaying stress and deformation data only from the surfaces of the model, both external and internal, where failure is most likely to occur. Avoiding full volumetric rendering significantly reduces computational demand while preserving essential analysis information. The approach supports the conversion of simulation data into AR-compatible formats and is adaptable across various platforms. This methodology enhances real-time performance and enables improved design validation, collaboration, and prototyping. It also contributes to the growing integration of AR in engineering analysis and is applicable to diverse fields such as aerospace, automotive, civil, and biomedical engineering, among others.Engineerin

The Physics of Blackness in Communities of Practice: Experiences of SAHE Administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

    No full text
This phenomenological study examined the experiences of administrators in student affairs in higher education (SAHE) at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and how they navigate the social construct of Blackness when leading professional development within their departments. This dissertation explored their understanding of the concept of ‘Blackness’ and the impact this has on their work. The following questions guided the study: (1) What are the experiences of SAHE administrators at HBCUs in preparing their divisions for transformative work around Blackness? (2) In what ways do the strategies they employ in professional development align with theories of adult and workplace learning? Data sources for this study included a screening questionnaire, interviews, institutional data, and the researcher’s journal. Data analysis followed the steps suggested by van Manen (2007) for phenomenological studies. Study findings are presented through four themes: (a) Importance of leadership roles, (b) Value of educational development, (c) Need for greater staff support, and (d) Adult and workplace learning. In summary, this study examined the experiences of Black SAHE administrators at HBCUs and their understanding of the construct of “Blackness” as well as how this understanding impacts their work. The study captured their voices and the contributions they make by identifying SAHE best practices within HBCU settings.Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education, and School Psycholog

Mental Health Help-Seeking Behavior through the Theory of Planned Behavior: Exploring the Roles of Stoicism and Fatalism

    No full text
In the United States, there is a prevalent and increasing epidemic of mental illness, particularly among college students, as well as an underutilization of mental health services despite their known benefits. This underutilization is linked to elevated unemployment rates, substance use disorders, and a higher risk of suicidal ideation and attempts. Disparities in the underutilization of mental health services vary across ethnic groups. Within the Hispanic community, cultural factors such as fatalism and stoicism may play a critical role in mental health help-seeking behavior. Fatalism is the acceptance of life events as predetermined, and stoicism is the endurance of pain without outward expression. Both factors have significant roles in the Hispanic community and correlate with adverse medical outcomes, making them critical to analyze. Understanding and addressing these cultural beliefs is crucial for developing interventions that improve the utilization of mental health services in culturally diverse populations. This study analyzes the role of factors associated with mental health help-seeking behaviors among undergraduate psychology students at Texas State University, particularly among Hispanic individuals. This study utilizes the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework to analyze the roles of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control in mental health help-seeking behavior. Then, this study incorporates the culturally significant factors of stoicism and fatalism into the TPB to analyze if these factors shape mental health help-seeking behavioral intentions. Lastly, the proposed model is compared between Hispanic and non-Hispanic participants to analyze if findings vary between the two groups. Data were collected via surveys administered through the Texas State SONA system. Hierarchical regression was employed to test the hypotheses. This study aims to enhance understanding of influential cultural factors on mental health help-seeking behaviors.Psycholog

The Effects of Print Parameters on the Tensile Strength and Permeability of SPD 3D Printed Sand Molds and Cores

    No full text
3D printing has revolutionized modern manufacturing and the metalcasting industry is no different as the invention of 3D sand printing came into the spotlight in the past couple of years. One 3D sand printing process is Selective Powder Deposition (SPD) which is a new process that can deposit shell sand, a commonly used material in foundries, to print cores and molds. Since this is an emerging new technology there is much that is not known about SPD 3D sand printing properties. Permeability and the tensile strength of cores and molds are important properties that foundries need to know as not knowing means they cannot control them to make good castings. This experiment is determined to find what printing parameters affect the permeability and tensile strength and if they change between orientations. The print parameters that were looked at were layer thickness, coarse track rarity, and fine track overlap. The orientations are going to be XY, YZ, and XZ. The results of this experiment were that permeability is proportional to the layer thickness in the YZ and XZ orientation. Permeability is inversely proportional to the fine track overlap only in YZ orientation. Tensile strength is inversely proportional to layer thickness in the XY and YZ orientation.Engineering Technolog

Perceptions of Prosocial Lying in a Novel Naturalistic Feedback Scenario

    No full text
Although prosocial lying—or lying to spare others’ feelings—is a ubiquitous behavior, little experimental work has contrasted responses to prosocial lies versus blunt truths in naturalistic contexts. To address this gap, we had young adults complete a difficult essay task. Their essay was evaluated by a student confederate assigned to one of three evaluation conditions: (1) harsh feedback (blunt truth); (2) positive feedback (unrevealed prosocial lie); and (3) positive feedback later revealed to not match the confederate’s real feelings (revealed prosocial lie). We assessed both overall participant enjoyment and participant impressions of the feedback giver. There was a significant effect of condition on both participant enjoyment and perceptions of the person who gave the feedback. Overall, participants enjoyed hearing unrevealed prosocial lies significantly more than both blunt truths and revealed prosocial lies with no difference in overall enjoyment between blunt truths and revealed prosocial lies. In contrast, although participants liked tellers of unrevealed prosocial lies the best, they also liked prosocial liars significantly more than blunt truth tellers. This study indicates that telling prosocial lies—even detected prosocial lies—may benefit the social relationships of the lie teller with implications for interpersonal interactions and human relationships.Psycholog

The New World District: Community, Blues, and Cultural Economy in Clarksdale, Mississippi

    No full text
This project examines the uneven blues tourist economy in Clarksdale, Mississippi, particularly in the historic New World District. Once a vibrant Black community, this area significantly contributed to the evolution of blues music and culture. Despite the growth of blues tourism in downtown Clarksdale—historically the white side of town during segregation—the New World District, the historic Black district, has deteriorated. This research also addresses the lack of preservation efforts for this culturally rich area, questioning why the New World District has been ignored while downtown has been revitalized and continues to benefit economically from the very traditions that developed in the New World District. By exploring its history, the project aims to highlight the significance of this neighborhood to Black community members through interviews that help preserve its cultural legacy. Through this exploration, the study seeks to illuminate the intersections of race, culture, and tourism. Drawing from Clyde Woods's work, it examines the history of the plantation system and the power dynamics that perpetuate racial inequalities in Clarksdale's economic, social, and cultural landscapes. By amplifying the voices of those whose culture is commodified, the project aims to understand the steps being taken through collective agency and community resilience to create more equitable economic development and preserve the heritage of the New World District. Ultimately, this study contributes to discussions in Black geographies, cultural geography, and music geography, providing insights into inclusive and sustainable development practices.Geography and Environmental Studie

Biochar: Bridging sustainability and health for a better tomorrow

Biochar, a carbon-rich material made by heating biomass in the absence of oxygen (pyrolysis), offers wide range of applications. Emerging research highlights its potential to improve physical, mental, community, and public health. Converting waste biomass into biochar sequesters carbon and improves water quality by adsorbing pollutants like heavy metals and pesticides. In urban green spaces, it enriches soil, increases water retention, and supports plant health, while reducing the urban heat island effect. Biochar also improves soil structure, making it more resilient to drought and flooding. As a solution for waste management, it helps recycle organic/woody/agri wastes, reducing landfill use and providing a sustainable resource for soil enhancement. Additionally, biochar reduces environmental stressors by filtering pollutants and sequestering carbon, improving air and water quality, and mitigating climate change.EngineeringChemistry and BiochemistryEngineering Technolog
