    The Mental Health Benefits of Nature Exposure: Implementing Nature-Based Social Prescribing at the Collegiate Level for Increased Student Support

    Mental health has been a rising topic of concern over the past decade, and its prominence within college campuses has prompted the development of systematic approaches to manage and mitigate the adverse effects of symptoms such as anxiety and depression. These methods primarily include counseling and psychiatric prescriptions. The current literature has already established the positive effects of nature on mental health and psychological well-being. Furthermore, the development of nature-based therapies has begun to be introduced as an alternative method to approaching the mental health crisis. As many college campuses have access to green spaces and natural areas, such programs may be beneficial additions to present initiatives to encourage students to spend greater time outdoors, practice self-care, and reduce negative feelings associated with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. This review examines the current literature on the mental health crisis in high-stress populations, namely college students, and utilizing nature and green spaces as a means of therapy to alleviate the harmful consequences of prevalent mental health disorders.Biolog

    Precise Scheduling of Mixed-Criticality Tasks in Real-Time Systems

    Real-time systems are designed to operate under timing constraints and typically require formal guarantees that all tasks will complete correctly under any possible scenario, including the worst-case execution conditions. In conventional worst-case analysis, each system parameter is represented by a single, conservative estimation. While this approach simplifies schedulability analysis, it often results in substantial pessimism, leading to underutilization of system resources and limited scalability. To address this issue, the mixed-criticality (MC) scheduling framework has been proposed. In an MC system, a single parameter may be associated with multiple estimates, each corresponding to a different level of system assurance or task criticality. This design enables systems to respond adaptively based on the actual behavior of high-criticality tasks. Most existing research in MC scheduling focuses on degrading or completely discarding low-criticality tasks when high-criticality tasks exceed their expected (i.e., normal-case) execution time, thereby ensuring safety but at the cost of overall service quality. Recently, a different direction, precise mixed-criticality scheduling aims to retain the full execution of all tasks, regardless of their criticality levels. Instead of sacrificing lower-criticality tasks, precise MC scheduling increases the computing resources when needed, thereby absorbing the extra workload of high-criticality tasks without service degradation. This approach provides stronger system guarantees and improved quality of service, but introduces new challenges in resource provisioning and schedulability analysis. In this dissertation, we investigate how the concept of precise MC scheduling can be effectively implemented across various types of task models and platforms. First, we propose a model for scheduling constrained-deadline tasks on uniprocessor systems with dynamic speed scaling. In this setting, the processor can increase its operating speed to compensate for execution time overruns by high-criticality tasks, thus maintaining schedulability without discarding any workload. We then extend our methodology to multiprocessor platforms where processors can operate at variable speeds, further increasing the flexibility and the efficiency of systems in handling critical workloads. Moreover, we explore scenarios in which processors can be dynamically reserved, allowing the number of available processors to vary over time. Finally, we expand our investigation to the gang task model, in which tasks require simultaneous execution on multiple processors. We examine how precise MC scheduling can be applied in such tightly coupled parallel execution environments without compromising the execution of any task. Through these efforts, our goal is to advance the feasibility and applicability of precise MC scheduling in a broad range of real-time systems, providing both guarantees and efficient resource usage.Computer Scienc

    Accelerated Glacier Thinning and Area Loss in the Wind River Range, Wyoming (1968–2019): Climate and Topographic Drivers

    Glacier meltwater influences streamflow and various activities in the western US. The Wind River Range (WRR) in Wyoming, which contains the largest glacial mass in the Rocky Mountains of the conterminous US, has been retreating since the Little Ice Age. This study examines long-term changes in WRR glaciers (>0.2 km2) over 1968–2019 and investigates their relationship with climatic and topographic factors. Using USGS topographic maps, satellite imagery, DEM datasets, and GPS surveys, we analyzed glacier area and surface elevation changes. Our results show a 19.2 ± 0.9% glacier area reduction from 1972 to 2019, with a 10.6 ± 0.3% decline from 2000–2019. Glacier thinning was most pronounced between 2000 and 2019 at −0.58 ± 0.11 m y−1, with lower-elevation glaciers thinning faster. Small, south-facing glaciers retreated more rapidly, while slope effects were mixed. Increasing spring temperatures and a shift toward more spring precipitation falling as rain has likely exacerbated glacier loss since 2000. Such accelerated melting has significant implications for water availability and ecosystem health if warming continues, affecting agricultural, industrial, and recreational water use.     Hop(p)la in French and German

    There is a growing body of conversation analytic research on the role of vocalizations and interjections in interaction. This conversation analytic article contributes to this research by comparing the use and functions of the interjection hop(p)la in French and German interaction. While hop(p)la occurs frequently in everyday French and German conversation, it has not been studied as it occurs in real time. The data come from publicly-available data repositories and from the authors’ own collections. Findings show that the use and function of hop(p)la differs from what is described in popular culture publications. In addition, there are differences in the function of hop(p)la as it is used in French and German.     Unlayering the Mola: Layered Leadership and Cultural Resistance in the Testimonios of Latina Superintendents

    Although Latinas constitute more than 27% of the U.S. student population, they represent less than 3% of superintendents nationwide, making them one of the most underrepresented groups in district-level leadership (Castillo et al., 2021; Dana & Bourisaw, 2020). This dissertation examines the lived experiences and leadership practices of Latina superintendents within this striking demographic disparity. Using testimonios and pláticas—culturally rooted qualitative methodologies grounded in Latina feminist theory, intersectionality, and Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) framework—this study explores how Latina leaders navigate the racialized, gendered, and political conditions of the superintendency while drawing on cultural, linguistic, and familial forms of capital. Rather than framing Latina leadership through deficit or “glass ceiling” narratives, this research foregrounds Latinas as storymakers who actively reshape the superintendency through relational, equity-oriented, and community-anchored practices. The findings illuminate how participants leverage aspirational, resistant, and navigational capital to confront systemic challenges—including political polarization, curricular controversies, and community expectations—while remaining rooted in culturally grounded values such as comunidad, respeto, and servicio. The study also addresses the current political climate, noting that debates surrounding race, identity, and public education have led to heightened scrutiny for leaders of color. Within this context, Latina superintendents’ leadership becomes both professional and political: an act of navigating policy landscapes while protecting the well-being of students and communities they serve. Ultimately, this dissertation contributes to national conversations on equity in educational leadership by documenting how Latina superintendents draw upon cultural wealth to foster inclusive, community-centered school systems.     Pseudogymnoascus destructans Transcriptional Response to Chronic Copper Stress

    Copper (Cu) is an essential metal micronutrient, and a fungal pathogen’s ability to thrive in diverse niches across a broad range of bioavailable copper levels is vital for host colonization and fungal propagation. Recent transcriptomic studies have implied that trace metal acquisition is important for the propagation of the white nose syndrome (WNS) causing fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, on bat hosts. This report characterizes the P. destructans transcriptional response to Cu-withholding and Cu-overload stress. We identify 583 differently expressed genes (DEGs) that respond to Cu-withholding stress and 667 DEGs that respond to Cu-overload stress. We find that the P. destructans Cu-transporter genes CTR1a and CTR1b, as well as two homologs to Cryptococcus neoformans Cbi1/BIM1 VC83_03095 (BLP2) and VC83_07867 (BLP3), are highly regulated by Cu-withholding stress. We identify a cluster of genes, VC83_01834 – VC83_01838, that are regulated by copper bioavailability, which we identify as the Cu-Responsive gene Cluster (CRC). We find that chronic exposure to elevated copper levels leads to an increase in genes associated with DNA repair and DNA replication fidelity. A comparison of our transcriptomic datasets with P. destructans at WNS fungal infection sites reveals several putative fungal virulence factors that respond to environmental copper stress.BiologyChemistry and BiochemistryInstitute for Molecular Life Science

    Culturally Tailored Psychological Interventions for Postpartum Depression in Marginalized Couples: A Systematic Review [poster]

    This systematic review explores the impact of culturally tailored psychological interventions on postpartum depression severity within the first 12 months postpartum among diverse couples. Guided by Leininger’s Culture Care Theory, the review synthesizes findings from ten studies that examine maternal and paternal mental health, cultural barriers to care, and the effectiveness of couple-based interventions. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, and UpToDate using keywords related to postpartum depression, paternal mental health, and culturally responsive care. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed U.S. studies published between 2020 and 2025. Articles were appraised using rapid critical appraisal tools and synthesized using an evidence table. Findings revealed that postpartum depression is significantly underrecognized in minority populations, especially among fathers. Culturally tailored interventions, including father-inclusive education, community-based support, and trauma-informed care, were associated with improved emotional well-being and reduced symptom severity. Couple relationship quality and culturally congruent care emerged as key factors in intervention success. This review supports integrating culturally responsive strategies into postpartum care to promote equity, emotional safety, and holistic family wellness. Advanced practice nurses can play a pivotal role in implementing inclusive screening protocols, fostering interprofessional collaboration, and advocating for policy reforms that reflect the lived experiences of diverse families.Nursin

    Lunar Dust Mitigation on Photovoltaic Devices by Application of Electrostatic Forces and Mechanical Vibrations

    Lunar dust presents a critical challenge for PV systems in space missions due to its fine particle size, strong adhesion, and lack of natural cleaning mechanisms. This study investigates a hybrid dust mitigation approach that combines electrostatic repulsion and mechanical vibration with simulated tilt angles to restore PV performance. A custom experimental setup was developed using LHS-1 lunar regolith simulant, a ZVS high-voltage system, a spring-mounted vibration motor, and a tiltable PV panel enclosed in a controlled environment. Cleaning effectiveness was measured using electrical output recovery and ImageJ software-based surface analysis across various voltages (10, 15, and 20 kV) and tilt angles (0°, 5°, 9.5°). The results showed that the combined method at 15 kV and 9.5° tilt delivered the best performance, achieving up to 78% power recovery and 64% surface cleaning in 3 minutes. Extended tests demonstrated enhanced performance, reaching 85% recovery and 97% dust removal after 12 minutes of operation. In contrast, vibration alone was insufficient, and 20 kV electrostatic cleaning caused arcing issues. The findings confirm the effectiveness of the hybrid method as a simple, safe, and low-power solution for future lunar PV maintenance. Further validation under vacuum and low-gravity environments is recommended.Engineerin
