The Impact of Language of Instruction on Teachers' Learning Practices in Primary Schools and Secondary Schools in Dili, Timor-Leste, and Its Implications in Preparing Human Resources

This study analyzes the impact of using Portuguese and Tetun as languages of instruction in primary and secondary schools in Dili, Timor Leste, and its implications for human resource development. While Tetun facilitates students' understanding in local contexts, its limited global relevance presents a challenge. Conversely, Portuguese, though internationally recognized, is not fluently spoken by most teachers and students, reducing the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. This qualitative research involved 68 informants, including education officials, principals, teachers, and students across Dili. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that language barriers, particularly in Portuguese, negatively affect classroom interaction, leading to poor student comprehension and low academic achievement. This situation may hinder the development of quality human resources capable of competing globally. The study recommends that the Timor Leste government and Ministry of Education intensify Portuguese training for both teachers and students, allocate funds for Tetun development, offer incentives to high-performing teachers, and encourage the consistent use of the instructional Language at home and in school, drawing from practices in Cuba and Venezuela. Strengthening language proficiency among educators and learners is essential to improving education quality and supporting Timor-Leste's broader socio-economic advancement

Pengawet Alami Kayu Sengon dengan Ekstrak Umbi Gadung terhadap Rayap Kayu Kering: Natural Preservatives of Sengon Wood with Umbi Gadung Extract Against Drywood Termites

ABSTRACT Sengon wood (A. chinensis) is a type of wood that has great potential as a source of industrial raw materials and holds significant economic value. However, sengon wood has low natural durability, classified as durability class IV–V, making it highly susceptible to attack by wood-destroying organisms such as termites. Therefore, wood preservation treatment is necessary to extend its service life. This study aims to analyze the interaction effect between the concentration of gadung tuber (D. hispida) extract with ethanol solvent and the soaking duration on the durability of sengon wood using the cold soaking method. The extract concentrations used were 1%, 3%, and 5%, and the soaking durations were 1 day, 2 days, and 3 days. The preserved samples were subjected to forced feeding tests using 50 healthy and active drywood termites (C. cynocephalus Light) on test specimens measuring 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm × 2 cm. The preservative performance parameters included absorption and retention, while the wood durability parameters included weight loss and termite mortality rate. The interaction between gadung tuber extract concentration and soaking duration significantly affected the retention and absorption values, while weight loss and termite mortality showed no significant effect. The highest retention and absorption values were obtained at a soaking duration of 3 days and a concentration of 5%, with average retention and absorption values of 0.028 g/cm³ and 0.438 g/cm³, respectively   Keywords: drywood termites, gadung tuber extract, sengon wood, wood preservation   ABSTRAK Kayu sengon (A.chinensis) merupakan kayu yang memiliki potensi sebagai penyedia bahan baku industri dan memiliki nilai ekonomi yang cukup besar. Katakunci: ekstrak umbi gadung, kayu sengon, pengawetan kayu, rayap kayu kerin

An analysis of relative clauses in scientific sentences

This research examines the application of restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses in academic journal articles, focusing on their syntactic and functional significance within linguistic discourse. This study utilizes data from the research titled “Verbal Humor in Selected Indonesian Stand-Up Comedians’ Discourse: Semantic Analysis.” The research uses GVTH to identify and classify relative sentences, examining their contributions to semantic clarity and literary sophistication. Restrictive clauses offer precise definitions essential for academic specificity, but non-restrictive clauses supply additional details that enhance the text. The findings underscore non-native English speakers' difficulties regarding relative clauses, shaped by grammatical disparities between their original language and English. This research emphasizes the necessity of learning relative clause usage to fulfill the requirements of high-quality academic writing. The study presents instructional implications to improve Indonesian graduate students’ and teachers’ academic writing abilities, who face mounting pressure to publish in foreign publications. Subsequent studies may build upon these findings by examining relative clause utilization across a wider corpus of academic literature and fields
