    Raising Our Children with Disabilities in Akomimoksin

    Across Turtle Island there are many Indigenous families who are raising children with a disability. Personal stories can create culturally safe platforms for Indigenous parents raising what Blackfoot Elders have referred to as Sakakiitsimaitapiiksi (our treasured children), to add voice to their experiences. The purpose of this article is to share the personal stories of two mothers parenting their children with the Blackfoot teaching of Akomimoksin (love). Mothers are givers of life and often assume the primary role of caregiving, educating, navigating and advocating for their children's holistic needs. When a mother wraps her arms around a child she creates a circle and located within the sanctity of this shape is the individual she would do anything to protect. It is within these responsibilities that the intersectionalities of Indigeneity and disability are discussed and choices are made. The stories of two mothers formulating decisions designed to reclaim and reculture for the sake of their disabled Indigenous child is shared. These stories will also address similar themes that have predicated systemic encounters, transformed perspectives, resonated hope, and developed awareness that may guide others on a parallel path.     Caring Classrooms in Crisis: COVID-19, Interest Convergence, and Universal Design for Learning

    This article explores how the University of Ottawa enacted interest convergence (Bell 1980; Dolmage 2020) during March 2020 when it changed its accessibility procedure because of the COVID-19 crisis. By looking to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP), I argue that educators should take a universalizing and intersectional understanding of disability in the classroom, designing classroom methods in advance to acknowledge ability difference from the beginning of teaching. Through two proposed assignments, this article outlines how educators can better care for their disabled, BIPOC, gender diverse, and/or queer students by acknowledging difference as itself an alternative means of knowledge-creation

    Techniques Developed in Early Cinema to Edit and Choreograph Unscripted Footage

    This article explores some of the editing and filming techniques developed in Early Cinema, and that are still valid when choreographing found footage today. The Lumière Brothers started revealing the choreographic nature of daily actions. Georges Méliès choreographed with editing by cutting, overlaying, dissolving and the substitution splice. Fernand Léger applied looping and kaleidoscope effects to create new rhythms and patterns. Lev Kuleshov experimented with assembling together footage of different nature, creating new semantics. Dziga Vertov choreographed footage of different sources, theorizing the rhythmical editing. Leni Riefenstahl composed new movement trajectories with editing and inverting speed

    Kinesthetic Exchanges between Cinematographers and Dancers: A Series of Screendance Interviews

    This paper examines the kinesthetic exchanges between camera operators and dancers, and proposes that their creative methodologies and interpersonal relationships can enhance the making of a screendance. I discuss how I discovered this project, unpack the phrase “kinesthetic exchange,” and identify the cinematographer as the co-creator of a film’s kinesthesia. I also discussscreendances that prioritize mobile camera operation, and I speculate that shared kinesthesia between camera and dancer has the potential to kinesthetically and emotionally affect audiences. Included are six interviews of contemporary dance makers and filmmakers that speak to the kinesthetic connection between the dancer and camera operator, and how that relationship enlivens the two-dimensionality of the frame. It is my intention to offer varying perspectives about kinesthetic exchanges between camera operators and dancers, and how their relationships may influence the creative processes for the creation of screendances

    A Modeling Activity: Analyzing Snowflakes Using Geometry

    The Snowflakes Task is a mathematical modeling task that explores the geometry of snowflakes. During this task, students categorize and analyze five purposefully selected snowflakes using geometric concepts such as symmetry and angles and use their knowledge of geometric attributes to create a mathematical model that could be used to analyze other snowflakes. By the end of the task, students will become familiar with different snowflakes shapes, further their understanding of geometric concepts, and describe the relationship between snowflakes and geometric attributes. The authors implemented the Snowflakes Task in two different settings: once with prospective teachers in a virtual setting and once with middle school students in person. In this paper, the authors share the task sequence, a summary of implementations, including adaptations made to support our implementation settings (virtual or in person), and student thinking revealed during data analysis
