A Demographic Profile of the Greater Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Amish
This article provides a demographic profile of the Amish in the Greater Lancaster County settlement, the oldest extant community and the largest in the world today. A dataset, based on a sample of about one in five households (N = 1,494), was developed from the 2015 directory for the Greater Lancaster settlement. The data is summarized along 10 major topics, including widows and widowers, ordained men, occupations of men, age at first marriage, most popular months for weddings, most popular days for weddings, number of children, birth intervals, stillbirths and infant deaths, and age and sex distribution of the population. The results are compared with the findings from a study of the Lancaster County Amish by Elmer Lewis Smith, published in 1960, that includes selected population statistics from the first half of the twentieth century and information that goes back to the final decade of the nineteenth century. The findings show a great deal of demographic stability; that is, trends in such demographic features as family size show only small, incremental changes. Only infant mortality and the occupations of men have shifted significantly. The article concludes by discussing the need for additional demographic research utilizing directories from other communities, large and small, old and new, and of different Amish groups based on the relative conservatism vs. progressivism of their church disciplines
Blurred Lines in Allegations of Musical Intertextuality: A Response to Orosz
This commentary responds to Orosz’s recent EMR article, which presents research on the accuracy of user-generated information on the whosampled.com website. In general, we find Orosz’s main conclusions—that the accuracy of an entry tends to relate to the type of sample (direct or interpolated), how distinct the sample is, and the style of music—are convincing and well-supported by examples. That said, we believe Orosz’s ultimate appraisal of the web site as an invaluable resource to be contingent on the user. From the viewpoint of a music theorist such as Orosz, the web site may indeed be a beneficial resource. But for other users, especially students aspiring to create popular music, a lack of education about the legal issues surrounding the web site may foster a problematic perspective on music sampling
LGBTQIA2S+ Well-Being within Academic Communities: The State of the Science
It is essential that academic communities achieve and maintain an inclusive campus climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and two-spirit plus (LGBTQIA2S+) faculty, staff, and students. Campus climate can influence faculty and student attrition, self-identity development of LGBTQIA2S+ students, and exacerbate documented health disparities. Academic settings have a challenging history when examining the relationship with LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Academicians were the originators of pathologizing identities and constructing deviant distinctions in text and publications. Campus climate sets the tone for the success of LGBTQIA2S+ members of academic communities, and research continues to emphasize the most influential factors that directly contribute to that success. Visibility of LGBTQIA2S+ faculty, staff, and students allow for both formal and informal social networks and encourages social and academic integration. Proximity to LGBTQIA2S+ faculty, staff, and students encourages both integration and visibility. Policies that protect and affirm LGBTQIA2S+ individuals are an essential component to visibility as they provide formal protection such as zero tolerance discrimination policies. Progress towards creating healthy academic communities for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals follows larger societal trends of acceptance, and progress continues today through knowledge generation and activism. Commitment to and recognition of the factors that foster healthy academic communities for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals ensures that the discovery and dissemination of knowledge will continue through a more inclusive lens
Peristomal Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Case and Review of the Literature
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory condition of apocrine gland-bearing skin that typically presents as deep, inflamed lesions in the axillary, inguinal, perineal, and mammary regions. We present a rare case of a man in his 60s with a history of HS who presented with a peristomal sinus tract, as well as non-healing, draining wounds around his stoma site that responded well to adalimumab therapy. A compounded clobetasol ointment with poly(ethelyene oxide) polymers (POLYOXTM, Dupoont) was utilized to maintain stoma appliance adhesion, and his lesions effectively cleared with adalimumab
Ecological Impacts of Anthropogenic Fire in Southwestern Ohio, USA, Documented from Public Land Survey Records from 1802 and 1803
Public Land Survey System (PLSS) data collected in 1802 and 1803 were analyzed to evaluate the impacts of anthropogenic fire on pre-Euro-American settlement plant communities within a 50,193 ha (194-square-mile) study area east of what is now Dayton, Ohio. Surveyor data were converted to digital point, line, and polygon files using ArcMap software and mapped with some interpolation based on contemporary GIS data layers including topography, soil moisture, soil type, and Quaternary geology. Sixty-one percent of the study area was covered with woody and non-woody plant communities that are known to be shaped and/or maintained by long-term exposure to surface fires of varying intensities and frequencies: oak-hickory forest, oak woodland, oak savanna, oak barrens, and mesic prairie. Prairies and barrens were concentrated adjacent to the corridors of the Mad River and the Little Miami River and their major tributaries, while oak woodlands were concentrated in adjacent uplands. Oak-sugar maple forest covered an additional 29% of the study area, a community that was interpreted to be pyrophilic oak forest transitioning to mesophytic/ pyrophobic forest in the long-term absence of fire

A novice teacher reflects on her first class of ELLs who spoke many native languages and shares her journey to improve. Three bang-for-the-buck strategies are shared.
