A Socio-Technical System For Neighborhood Urban Redevelopment

    No full text
This dissertation research seeks to ascertain whether a holistic Sociotechnical Systems (STS) framework can be applied to the redevelopment of urban neighborhoods within the City of Detroit. While there have been extensive redevelopment efforts taking place in the city, the question arises as to their sustainability. In addition, discussion has taken place as to whether certain redevelopment projects operate in silos. Social impact of urban redevelopment is also discussed. There is little evidence that such projects encompass the entire urban environment and its stakeholders, especially inside the neighborhoods. Access to capital, fair distribution of tax incentives, and government transparency are just a few of the issues that arose in this study. Research will be developed to present the history of an STS system and whether its applicability to urban redevelopment is effective. Critical elements encompassing an STS system will be identified and defined. Qualitative and quantitative research analysis will be developed based on market participants in the City of Detroit. The research will use the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, Corktown, as a case study to explore the applicability of an STS theory and its effectiveness in urban redevelopment. The findings will be presented from multiple perspectives and will highlight the complex systemic nature of urban redevelopment and key elements that relate to empowering and educating all stakeholders. While the sample size is small, it does shed light on urban redevelopment issues that exist in the City of Detroit dilapidated neighborhoods. Keywords: Sociotechnical systems, urban redevelopment, urban planning, sustainability, stakeholders, access to capita

Parenting In The Shadow Of Adversity: The Impact Of Maternal Representation, Reflectivity, And Disrupted Caregiving Behavior On Infant Attachment Security

    No full text
Infants and young children who cannot reliably turn to their caregivers to reduce their feeling of threat or alarm are at heightened risk for developing an insecure attachment. It is well-established that maternal sensitivity is an important, though not sole, predictor of attachment insecurity. A parent’s history of current or past adversity can disrupt caregiving behavior. However, the mechanisms by which parental exposure to current or childhood adversity can negatively impact maternal caregiving, resulting in infant insecurity, are not fully understood. This study examined associations between three facets of parenting (representation, reflectivity, and disrupted caregiving behavior) within the social context (income and race) in a sample of women with a history of childhood and current adversity. It further tested if those aspects of parenting and context predict infant/toddler security above the contribution of maternal sensitivity. The study also explored whether receiving dyadic treatment through the Michigan Model of Infant Mental Health Home Visiting moderated any associations. The results confirm the importance of examining and addressing the influence of poverty and its potential to disrupt parental reflectivity and infant/toddler security. In the case of mothers with non-balanced representations, early intervention – prenatally through the child’s first two years – is essential to support the developing parent/infant relationship. A novel contribution includes using two brief measures of maternal behavior and infant security, which community practitioners can be trained to use

Abstract VIRTUAL SUPERVISION VERSE FACE-TO-FACE SUPERVISION AND HOW IT IMPACTS SELF-EFFICACY FOR COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING by LINDA YATOOMA May 2024 Advisor: Dr. Anita Welch Major: Counselor Education Degree: Doctor of Philosophy The study focuses mainly on counselors-in-training self-efficacy and the impact of clinical supervision. The sample size of 227 counselors-in-training all received some type of clinical supervision. The deliverance of clinical supervision did not have any significance between them. Therefore, virtual clinical supervision is just as effective as face-to-face clinical supervision. Also, the counselors-in-training who were in internship class had a much higher level of self-efficacy than the counselors-in-training in the technique and practicum class. The counselors-in-training in the practicum class had a much higher level of self-efficacy than the technique class. Therefore, the level of counseling programs does affect the level of self-efficacy

Lesson Study As A Form Of Professional Development For Mathematics Faculty In Higher Education

    No full text
A traditional faculty member’s job function involves both teaching and research. However, unlike in K-12 education, the majority of faculty members have little to no formal training on teaching methods prior to entering the classroom. This study focuses on implementing Lesson Study as a form of professional development in higher education to determine if lesson study can be used as a form of professional development in higher education to improve faculty members knowledge on teaching and learning, specifically in mathematics. This study also aimed to investigate faculty members’ perceptions on lesson study as a form of professional development. This study solicited faculty members’ perceptions on teaching and learning before and after their involvement in the study to determine if they believe lesson study improved their knowledge on teaching and learning mathematics. This study used qualitative data collection methods, such as interviews, classroom observations, and debriefs, to gain an understanding of faculty members’ perceptions. The findings of this study were that faculty members believed there was value in participating in lesson study. However, lesson study impacted faculty members knowledge on teaching and learning differently. The data of this study suggests that how much knowledge faculty members gain from their involvement in lesson study is connected to their willingness to learn along with their willingness to change. The findings of this study revealed key characteristics for structuring faculty learning communities, such as the need for a respectful learning community where faculty members desire to learn from each other, and support each other when making changed in the classroom, and the time commitment necessary to ensure a productive professional development opportunity

Towards Reliable And Efficient Blockchain Applications

    No full text
Since its introduction with Bitcoin in 2009, blockchain technology has evolved significantly, expanding beyond its initial financial scope to become a crucial element in various industries. This innovation represents a new era that offers the potential to transform sectors like real estate, healthcare, and law by enabling secure, transparent, and decentralized transactions. The appeal of blockchain lies in its ability to support direct transactions without the need for intermediaries, leading to cost reduction, improved efficiency, and increased security. Through its decentralized ledger, the blockchain ensures that each transaction is securely encrypted and connected to previous ones, making it highly challenging to manipulate historical data without network consensus. This dissertation explores the possibilities and obstacles of blockchain technology and smartcontracts, proposing innovative approaches to enhance their effectiveness, scalability, and security. The research addresses crucial barriers to blockchain adoption, including limitations in scalability, concerns about privacy, vulnerabilities in security, and the complexities of integrating real-world data. One solution presented is Speedster, a Layer-2 state channel developed to address the scalability and efficiency issues of blockchain. Furthermore, a secure and effective framework named BCRAND is introduced to generate verifiable random numbers on BFT-based blockchains. Another contribution is FSPDE, a plausible deniable encryption system designed specifically for blockchain applications to protect private keys against physical coercion. Lastly, FALCON offers an innovative Oracle solution to address the latency challenges commonly seen in existing blockchain oracles

Remixing Community Cartographies: Mapping Community Engagement, New Media, And The Composition Classroom

    Get PDF
Community Writing has emerged as a relatively new subdiscipline that spans elements of larger fields such as Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Technical and Professional Communication, and Composition Pedagogy. Despite this recent emergence, teacher-scholars are still grappling with three major problematics traditionally associated with Community Engaged Learning (CEL) writ large: (1) this work frequently fails to address the real needs and basic material realities of community partners in favor of (2) a repetitive cycle of short-lived educational “experiences” for students, often without tangible and/or sustainable results, which is further exacerbated by (3) a shortage of useful data-driven assessment conducted on curriculum, pedagogy, and other community-oriented work within the discipline. To address these problematics, this dissertation proposes a methodological approach to teaching and assessing CEL courses based in assembly, remix, space, place, story, and practices from the Detroit Geographical Expedition and Institute. A pedagogical heuristic is described and then tested in an experimental course against a control. Student outcomes are assessed using mixed methods and discussed in relation to the heuristic\u27s efficacy and future directions for research

Shadows and Seduction: Exploring the Duality of Night in Romeo and Juliet

    Get PDF
This essay explores how societal perceptions of night evolved from a time of secret worship to a period fraught with fear and demonic influence. Further, this essay explores Shakespeare\u27s use of night to frame the clandestine romance between Romeo and Juliet, highlighting the lovers\u27 perilous engagement with darkness. By embodying the duality of night within the lovers, Shakespeare underscores the timeless struggle between the purity of light and the seduction of night. Additionally, this duality serves as a cautionary narrative, urging audiences to resist the allure of night\u27s temptation and remain in the true light of God

    Democracy\u27s Ruling Hand

The claim of liberal constitutionalism is that a text-like object or a ‘diplomatically abstract’ set of principles can work a deflection of disagreements within a pluralist polity. But this project assumes both that pluralism remains amenable to reason and that reason is a capacity independent of the profound differences of meaning, value, and forms of life that shape those disagreements. Neither assumption is correct. Differences in norms, values, and forms of life inevitably undergird and structure differences in meaning, perception, and interpretation. Consequently, a constitution (even when written and accompanied by judicial review) will necessarily unfold in an ongoing process of political cooperation and contestation. Legitimacy can arise only from the practice of democracy itself – that is, self-governance under conditions that realistically accord equal recognition and respect to all participants. Law is not some abstract entity or prior fixation, special and above. It is not, as Michelman once said, ‘an autonomous force’ that provides ‘an external untouchable rule of the game’. It is just another social institution or performative practice that does (or does not) reflect our democratic nomos. To be committed, as a strong democrat, to the rule of law is to be committed to the idea that we make the rules by which we govern ourselves. Equal voice, equal power, and equal law are just self-government. They are internal to – that is, constitutive of – the game. They are not untouchable; indeed, they are being manhandled every day. But they nevertheless describe a democratic constitution that fully legitimates itself in its performance

Clinical Pathway using Arabic Written Medical Information to Improve Incontinence Healthcare Utilization

    Get PDF
Introduction and Objective: Metro Detroit holds ~13% of all Arabic speakers in the U.S.A. and 91% of those in Michigan. Evidence supports that patients who do not speak the local language have poor access to healthcare. This study describes our preliminary experience of managing Arabic only speaking women with bothersome stress urinary incontinence (SUI) from May 2022 to October 2023. These women routinely request same-sex interpreters, which is not always possible, leading to a lack of detailed translation. A potential solution is to use Arabic written medical information (AWMI). The purpose of the study was to retrospectively look at the number of Arabic only speaking female patients scheduling Bulkamid procedure for their SUI nine months prior to AWMI being available and nine months after AWMI becoming available. Methods: From May 2022 to January 2023, all Arabic only speaking/reading female patients with SUI were provided the Bulkamid brochure in English. From February 2023 to October 2023, all Arabic only speaking/reading female patients with SUI were provided Bulkamid AWMI to read. The number of Bulkamid cases scheduled nine months before and after the AWMI brochure became available was evaluated. Results: From May 2022 to January 2023, 40 of 70 (57%) patients who received the brochure in English scheduled a Bulkamid procedure. From February 2023 to October 2023, 60 of 62 (92%) patients receiving AWMI on Bulkamid scheduled the procedure. Conclusions: Our study suggests that AWMI on Bulkamid procedures may have a positive impact on healthcare accessibility by increasing access to medical information
