    Fetal Functional Connectivity: Examining The Role Of Maternal Depression Symptoms

    Altered fetal brain development is a hypothesized mechanism in the association between maternal prenatal depression and offspring neurodevelopment. Accordingly, the present study examined several hypotheses related to associations between prenatal maternal depression symptoms and fetal brain development. Research participants included 123 pregnant women. Participants completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale questionnaire and underwent a fetal MRI scan. The current analysis did not find significant associations between maternal depression symptoms and intra/inter fetal functional connectivity in the Default Mode Network, Salience Network, and Central Executive Network, nor inter fetal functional connectivity between the amygdala, ventral medial prefrontal cortex, and the hippocampus. A significant association between prenatal depression symptoms and decreased global efficiency in the right Rolandic Operculum brain region was detected. Voxel-wise analysis demonstrated several significant associations between prenatal depression symptoms and functional connectivity with the six primary brain regions of interest. These findings provide some evidence that the link between maternal prenatal depression and child outcomes could be partially accounted for by alterations in fetal brain functioning

    Cds Quantum Dot Aerogels: Exploring Structure-Property Relationships To Improve Photocatalytic Water Splitting Activity

    Photocatalytic water splitting reaction is a promising method to produce hydrogen fuel, the fuel of the future that is estimated to substitute fossil fuels as the main energy source globally. However, the lack of efficient photocatalysts limits the production of hydrogen from the water splitting. In efforts to improve the efficiency of photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction, we were motivated to evaluate CdS QD gels as photocatalysts and explore structure property relationships that improve the materials activity. This thesis shows the influence of the CdS crystal structure (zincblende, zb- vs. wurtzite, w-) on ~3.2-3.3 nm CdS QDs, with quick (16 h) thermodynamic aggregation of the wCdS QDs that deactivated the H2 production rate from from 1,221 (fresh) to 162 (16 h aged) µmol H2 h–1 g–1, while zbCdS QDs did not lose activity upon ageing, producing 1,458 µmol H2 h–1 g–1. The oxidative assembly of CdS QDs into QD gels was also evaluated, with the gels showing improvement of the materials catalytic activity: from 1,458 (QD) to 6,650 (AG) µmol H2 h–1g–1 on zbCdS and from 1,221 (QD) to 3,325 (AG) µmol H2 h–1g–1 on wCdS. Thermal processing the materials up to 250 °C improved even further their performance by increasing exciton delocalization effect, although annealing past 250 °C caused sintering and stark deactivation due to surface area loss. Producing composites made of Pt NPs with CdS QD gels showed good increase on the material performance. The 0.5% w/w Pt/CdS AG made with co-gelation method was the most active photocatalyst achieving 6,810 µmol H2 h–1 g–1, compared to 4,565 µmol H2 h–1 g–1 of the wet loaded 0.5% Pt/CdS AG and 3,690 µmol H2 h–1 g–1 of pure CdS AG. Additionally, small and ultrasmall CdS QDs and QD gels were synthesized, and both size-dependent electronic and structural properties were measured. Trap state recombination was found to be the most prominent recombination pathway in particles lower than 4.0 nm, and band edge recombination the most predominant in past 4.0 nm. The gels surface area was found to decrease with the QD diameter decrease as well. Data about the materials VBM and CBM are being studied to fully characterize the band structure of these materials

    The Challenges of Translating World Prison Literature: Investigating Omid Tofighian’s Contribution to No Friend but the Mountains

    This article focuses on the English translation of No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison. I investigate the Boochani-Tofighian collaboration and argue that Omid Tofighian is not only a translator but also a collaborator in the English version of Boochani’s text. I consider Tofighian’s contribution an integral and indispensable part of No Friend but the Mountains and the Manus Prison Theory. In this article, I explore the collaborative aspects of the translation and the translation challenges through a focus on the frame narrative, which consists of both the “Translator’s Note” and the supplementary essay that has the final “Translator’s Reflections.” I read this paratext in light of the other scholarly work of Tofighian. My article shows that Tofighian’s intervention is the result of (1) untranslatability and (2) his responsibility as he transmits the message of an incarcerated Kurdish refugee to the Australian public

    Ventriloquizing Animal Voices to Acknowledge Indigenous Voices in Sorensen\u27s The Lucky Galah

    With an analysis of Tracy Sorensen’s The Lucky Galah (2018), I ask how we can respect and acknowledge Aboriginal ownership and sovereignty without appropriation, exoticization, or trivialization. I suggest that Sorensen does this in her novel by imagining the unknowable voice of an animal. The novel uses the viewpoint of a galah and the story of an Aboriginal woman who adopts her. Using Gerald Vizenor’s idea of survivance, I discuss how animal voices offer a way to “walk with” other people and species through the devices of speculative fiction, continuing my work with science fiction that imagines ways of exchanging an acknowledgment of mutual personhood without perfect understanding of either one by the other, employing what I call the amborg gaze
