Performance of SEACLID/CORDEX-SEA multi-model experiments in simulating temperature and rainfall in Vietnam
The study examined the performance of six regional climate experiments conducted under the framework of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling/Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment-Southeast Asia (SEACLID/CORDEX-SEA) project and their ensemble product (ENS) in simulating temperature at 2 m (T2m) and rainfall (R) in seven climatic sub-regions of Vietnam. The six experiments were named following the names of their driving Global Climate Models (GCMs), i.e., CNRM, CSIRO, ECEA, GFDL, HADG and MPI. The observation data for the period 1986–2005 from 66 stations in Vietnam were used to compare with the model outputs. Results showed that cold biases were prominent among the experiments and ENS well reproduced the seasonal cycle of temperature in the Northeast, Red River Delta, North Central and Central Highlands regions. For rainfall, all the experiments showed wet biases and CSIRO exhibited the best. A scoring system was elaborated to objectively rank the performance of the experiments and the ENS experiment was reported to be the best
Estimation of Above Ground Biomass Using Support Vector Machines and ALOS/PALSAR data
L-band Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data has been extensively used for forest aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation due to its higher saturation level. However, SAR backscatter is highly influenced by the topography characteristics along with the bio-geophysical properties of vegetation and underneath soil characteristics. This has limited the accuracy of directly relating the SAR backscatter with above ground biomass in highly undulated terrain. In this study, it has been observed that terrain degree of slope and aspect plays a vital role in influencing the SAR backscatter in addition with AGB. Because of this, the degree of slope and aspect along with SAR backscatter in HH (transmit and receive polarizations are horizontal) and HV (transmit horizontal and receive vertical) polarizations have been considered as inputs for Support Vector Machine (SVM) to improve the biomass retrieval accuracy. Our results demonstrate that the accuracy of AGB estimation over hilly terrain can be significantly improved by considering topographical characteristics in addition to L-band backscatter.
Buckling and postbuckling of CNT-reinforced composite sandwich cylindrical panels subjected to axial compression in thermal environments
An analytical investigation on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) sandwich cylindrical panels exposed to thermal environments and subjected to uniform axial compression is presented in this paper. Beside sandwich model with CNTRC face sheets in the literature, the present work suggests a sandwich model with CNTRC core layer and homogeneous face sheets. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reinforced into matrix phase through uniform or functionally graded distributions. Effective properties of nanocomposite layers are determined according to extended rule of mixture. Formulations are based on the first order shear deformation theory taking into account Von Karman-Donnell nonlinearity. Approximate solutions are assumed to satisfy simply supported boundary conditions and Galerkin method is used to derive the closed-form expression of nonlinear load-deflection relation from which buckling loads and postbuckling paths are determined. Numerical examples are carried out and interesting remarks are given
Automata Technique for The LCS Problem
In this paper, we introduce two efficient algorithms in practice for computing the length of a longest common subsequence of two strings, using automata technique, in sequential and parallel ways. For two input strings of lengths m and n with m ≤ n, the parallel algorithm uses k processors (k ≤ m) and costs time complexity O(n) in the worst case, where k is an upper estimate of the length of a longest common subsequence of the two strings. These results are based on the Knapsack Shaking approach proposed by P. T. Huy et al. in 2002. Experimental results show that for the alphabet of size 256, our sequential and parallel algorithms are about 65.85 and 3.41m times faster than the standard dynamic programming algorithm proposed by Wagner and Fisher in 1974, respectively
Establishing calculation method for chemical composition of primitive magma in the Cenozoic in South Central coast region and the adjacent continental shelf of Vietnam
The calculations which determine the chemical composition of the primitive magma are simple but they show changes in the temperature and pressure states of the magma source. The method is based on the addition of the chemical composition of the Olivine to the major element composition of the eruptive rocks which follows the formula: Ci = Ci-1+ 0.1 * Ci-1Ol. In accordance with the characteristics of the study area, we have made new additions to the calculation method. The calculation results are highly accurate when tested and compared with the chemical composition of the eruptive rocks. The chemical composition of the primitive magma solution is used to calculate the temperature and pressure states in the magma source. The results show that there is a difference in temperature and pressure in the source at different tectonic positions in the study area. Accordingly, the South Central coast region and the adjacent continental shelf are divided into two main types of eruptions. The first type of volcanic eruptions occurs at locations where major faults intersect and they are located north of the study area. The second type of volcanic eruptions in the form of a single volcano is located to the south of the study area and the southeastern continental shelf, and occurs in intracontinental extension structure
Impact of sand mining on sediment transport and morphological change of Hai Phong coastal area
The paper presents the results of simulating the impact of sand mining on sediment transport and morphological change in Hai Phong coastal area based on Delft3D model. Scenario groups are established: Present scenarios without sand mining and simulated scenarios of the present sand mining (assuming 30% sand compared to plan). The scenario groups are calculated in the dry and rainy seasons for main wind directions (NE, SE, SW) in the case of moderate wind and strong wind. The results show that sand mining reduces sediment flow alongshore (2–81%) and seawards (5–83%). Besides, the increase in depth causes morphological change in this area: Rising the deposition rate (5–10 mm/month) at the sand mining locations; decreasing accretion rate and increasing the erosion rate in the neighboring areas of sand mining location
TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT OF GAMMA-AMINO BUTYRIC ACID (GABA) PRODUCTION FROM RICE BRAN
This research focused on technical assessment of GABA production from rice bran through fermentation by Lactobacillus brevis. Influence of operating pressure on separation of GABA by nanofiltration membrane was investigated and 4 bar was suitable for the nanofiltration process. The purification of GABA by nanofiltration with constant feed volume was carried out and purity of GABA reached 4.8 folds, compared to feed, at 5 volumes of added water. At 40 of concentration factor in concentration of GABA solution by nanofiltration with full recycle of retentate, content of GABA reached 49.8 g/L. The production of GABA from defatted rice bran at pilot scale was carried out at 1,000 L/batch (equal to 200 kg of rice bran) of fermentation. Estimation of mass balance showed that, with 200 kg of defatted rice bran, 7.0 kg of GABA powder was obtained. Results indicated that, it is potential to produce GABA from rice bran through the fermentation by Lactobacillus brevis
ANTIBACTERIAL FINISHING ON COTTON 100% AND CVC FABRICS WITH TANNIN FROM PIPER BETLE EXTRACT
Following the recent trend of using natural ingredients from bio-macromolecules, biomaterials, plant extract in textile chain, this research aims to develop an antibacterial textiles finishing with Tannin extracted from piper betle plant. The extracting processes were carried out with different solvent: distilled water, Ethanol 30%, Ethanol 50%, Ethanol 70% in 60 minutes. Two important types of fabric, including Cotton and CVC (Cotton/Polyester) were padded with piper betle extracts, then dried at 60oC in 5 minutes. The presence of tannin on fabric after treatment was determined by FeCl3 test and FT-IR spectrum. The antibacterial effect of finished fabrics was proved according to ASTM 2149-01 standard. The test was performed with Escherichia Coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococus aureus AATCC 6538. The final results exhibited good antibacterial activity of 83.02%, 65,33% against the bacteria Ecoli and 93.88 %, 85.14% against the bacteria S.Aureus on cotton and then CVC fabrics
Cyanide detoxification efficiency of injection and soak of hydroxocobalamin, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate for sea water ornamental fish
The Oceanographic Museum offers interesting exhibits of several marine lives for tourist sightseeing and entertainment. These sea water ornamental fish are all caught in the wild. However, its health can be affected by cyanide poisoning during human fishing. Depending on the level of cyanide poisoning, fish can die after one and two weeks that caused economic damages for the museum. The present study is concerned with results of cyanide detoxification by using direct injection into cinnamon clownfish or soak of hydroxocobalamin, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate with the aim of improving the health, survival and life time for fish, contributing to increasing economic efficiency for the Oceanographic Museum
Chemical composition and major volatile compounds of the hydrolyzed product from Kappaphycus alvarezii by-products using flavourzyme
The chemical composition of flavourzyme hydrolysis product from Kappaphycus alvarezii by-products was analyzed. The results showed that the protein hydrolysate powder had high content of proteins (21.66%) and low content of lipids (0.22%). Hydrolyzed products contained about 15 free amino acids with relatively high content of some amino acids such as aspartic acid (1,879 mg/100 g), glutamic acid (1,813 mg/100 g), glycine (1,121 mg/100 g), tyrosine (1,203 mg/100 g) ) and serine (3,165 mg/100 g). In addition, main volatile flavor compounds such as acetophenone; nonanal; indole; 2.4-di-tert-butylphenol; heptadecane; 6.10.14- trimethylpentadecan-2-one have also been discovered. As a result, the by-products of K. alvarezii take a potential role in the food industry
