Applied sciences / Development and Evaluation of Customized Bike Saddle Pads Using Innovative Design for AM Approaches and Suitable Additive Manufacturing Processes

    No full text
Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) has made significant advancements in recent years, with development focusing on pivotal aspects such as topology optimization (TO), generative design (GD), lattice structures, and AI-based algorithms. This paper puts forth a proposed methodology for the development of customizable bike saddle pads for manufacturing with AM. The approach entails the selection of appropriate AM processes and materials, the evaluation of material properties through compression testing, an initial saddle pressure mapping and bike fitting, the design and AM of bespoke saddle pads based on the initial measurements, and a validation pressure mapping and bike fitting. The investigation yielded clear findings regarding improvements in both pressure distribution and the change in pressure peaks, as well as an improvement in riding comfort. The findings indicate that although the overall process is innovative, improvements are required to streamline the measuring, modeling, and manufacturing workflow

Foods / Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Differently Processed Smoothies and Fresh Produce from Austria

    No full text
Plant-derived foods are potential vehicles for microbial antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can be transferred to the human microbiome if consumed raw or minimally processed. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the amount of clinically relevant ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in differently processed smoothies (freshly prepared, cold-pressed, pasteurized and high-pressure processed) and fresh produce samples (organically and conventionally cultivated) to assess potential health hazards associated with their consumption. The MGE ISPps and the class 1 integron-integrase gene intI1 were detected by probe-based qPCR in concentrations up to 104 copies/mL in all smoothies, lettuce, carrots and a single tomato sample. The highest total (2.2 × 105 copies/mL) and the most diverse ARG and MGE loads (16/26 targets) were observed in freshly prepared and the lowest prevalences (5/26) and concentrations (4.1 × 103 copies/mL) in high-pressure-processed (HPP) smoothies. BlaCTX-M-1-15 (1.2 × 105 c/mL) and strB (6.3 × 104 c/mL) were the most abundant, and qacEΔ1 (95%), blaTEM1 (85%), ermB and sul1 (75%, each) were the most prevalent ARGs. QnrS, vanA, sat-4, blaKPC, blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-10 were never detected. HPP treatment reduced the microbial loads by ca. 5 logs, also destroying extracellular DNA potentially encoding ARGs that could otherwise be transferred by bacterial transformation. The bacterial microbiome, potential pathogens, bacterial ARG carriers and competent bacteria able to take up ARGs were identified by Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing. To reduce the risk of AMR spread from smoothies, our data endorse the application of DNA-disintegrating processing techniques such as HPP

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering / A software benchmark for cardiac elastodynamics

    No full text
In cardiovascular mechanics, reaching consensus in simulation results within a physiologically relevant range of parameters is essential for reproducibility purposes. Although currently available benchmarks contain some of the features that cardiac mechanics models typically include, some important modeling aspects are missing. Therefore, we propose a new set of cardiac benchmark problems and solutions for assessing passive and active material behavior, viscous effects, and pericardial boundary condition. The problems proposed include simplified analytical fiber definitions and active stress models on a monoventricular and biventricular domains, allowing straightforward testing and validation with already developed solvers.European Research Council 852544Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung (DE-588)2054142-9 10.55776/P37063 10.55776/I4652Version of recor

Strength and endurance training for migraine

    No full text
Abstract Background: Migraine is among the most disabling diseases worldwide, ranking second in terms of disability. Many patients experience severe headaches and significant limita-tions in both work and social life. Current treatment primarily relies on pharmacological ap-proaches, which may worsen symptoms and lead to medication overuse headache (MOH). This work aims to examine the effects of strength and endurance training on mi-graine frequency and pain intensity. Methods: The research question was addressed through a systematic literature review. Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected via a systematic search in the PubMed and PEDro databases. The quality of the studies was assessed using the PEDro scale. The interventions described in the studies included strengthening exercises for the neck muscles and various endurance training methods. Results: Two of the selected studies focused on endurance training, with one comparing high-intensity to moderate-intensity training, while the other involved only moderate-intensity training. The third study investigated strength training of the cervical muscles. Two studies reported statistically significant changes in migraine frequency (Krøll et al., 2018; Hanssen et al., 2018), and two studies found statistically significant changes in mi-graine intensity within the intervention groups (Krøll et al., 2018; Benatto et al., 2022). Conclusion: Due to the limited quality and evidence of the included studies, no definitive answer to the research question can be provided. While endurance training may have pos-itive effects, further comprehensive research is needed to confirm the actual effectiveness of these interventions

In the contemporary era, anthropogenic emissions of diverse gases are identified as the primary driving force behind climate change. Of particular significance are the gases that contribute to global greenhouse warming, which are called greenhouse gases. The term "greenhouse gases" encompasses a range of atmospheric constituents that can contribute to global warming through various mechanisms. These include the absorption of Earth’s blackbody radiation, the formation of aerosols and clouds. When considered alongside other non-gas related factors, such as albedo changes and solar flux, these processes can be collectively termed as the "radiative forcing." This term is defined as the change in the net downward minus upward radiative flux (expressed in W/m2) due to a change in an external driver of climate change. The most prominent greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide, and a significant part of the political discussion surrounding strategies for combating global warming is focused on this particular gas. However, more comprehensive scientific initiatives have identified a number of problematic gas species. The Kyoto Protocol, an extension of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is an international treaty that defines seven gas species with the potential for dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. The seven Kyoto gases are as follows: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3). This thesis will focus on the absorption properties of N2O. As it is known that various processes can alter the natural isotope abundance of N2O, the 15N site preference can be used as an isotopic tracer. However, while 15N site preference can reveal mechanisms of N2O formation and reduction, distinguishing between production and consumption processes remains challenging due to overlapping isotopic signatures and variable fractionation factors. This work presents an IR spectroscopic approach that elucidates the IR spectrum of N2O and its most common isotopologues, and also determines the isotopologue ratio without the need for calibration.

    No full text
Competitive athletes are people who regularly train very intensively to improve their performance. This often involves pain, which has shown correlations with fear of failure, catastrophizing of pain and so-called self-handicapping behavior in previous studies. According to current research, self-handicapping protects one’s self-esteem from possible failure. Fear of failure is often cited as the primary motive for this. Regarding earlier studies, this can even lead to competition anxiety and is on the one hand influenced by the high pressure to which athletes are exposed and on the other hand by the attribution styles of success and failure. However, very little research has been conducted into self-handicapping behavior in the context of sports, which raises the question of whether athletes use it or not. To expand the current state of research, the connection between pain, self-handicapping and fear of failure was investigated. Competitive and recreational athletes are compared with each other and a distinction is made between women and men. As a part of an online questionnaire, the subjects were surveyed using the MPQ, the PCS, the SHS, the PFAI, the WAI-T, the STAI and the SASS. The data was then analyzed using t-tests, Pearson correlations and regression analyses. It was found that women catastrophize pain more than men. Moreover, it was confirmed that the catastrophizing of pain has a positive correlation with pain intensity. The positive correlations between fear of failure and pain intensity, as well as the subscales of competition anxiety and trait anxiety, were also verified. However, competitive athletes show a greater intensity of pain compared to recreational athletes. But they do not have a stronger tendency to exhibit self-handicapping behavior. This could be because competitive athletes now often deal with their mental strength and therefore no longer rely on self-handicapping behavior to protect their self-esteem. Finally, in the future, it should be considered that the subjective and individual perception of pain is influenced by various factors.Katharina PlatzerAbstract in englischer SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
