The Influence of CEOs' Backgrounds on the Innovation Behavior of European Family Businesses in Times of Crisis
This thesis examines how CEO characteristics shape the innovation behavior of European family firms during times of crisis. It draws on Upper Echelons Theory and focuses on four observable traits: age, tenure, education, and managerial experience. The analysis uses panel data from 75 publicly listed family businesses in Europe, covering the period of the Great Recession and the Euro Crisis (2007–2014). The dataset is based on the Global Family Business Index by the University of St. Gallen and EY. Executive information stems from desk research, while financial data comes from Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters Datastream. The study applies quantitative methods to explore how leadership traits affect R&D expenditure; the results show significant links between executive profiles and firm-level innovation activity. These findings enhance the literature on family business and innovation and offer practical insights for corporate governance and succession planning.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Northern Caves 2023 Expedition Report. Wulff Land, Greenland : Avannaani Qaarusuit, 2023-mi. Wulff Landimi Ilisimasassarsiornermi Nalunaarusiaq Kalaallit Nunaat
Caves offer one of the last remaining realms on Earth for original exploration. It is not possible forsatellites to see inside the Earth, or for robots to map underground labyrinths. Learning about the world beneathour feet therefore requires humans to physically enter the underworld. Due to the harsh environment, remotelocation and difficult logistics, the most northerly-known caves in the world, located in North Greenland at c.82°N, remain largely unexplored.
This project aimed to rectify this situation by mounting the first dedicated cave-exploration expedition to NorthGreenland where the team accessed, explored, documented and mapped a number of previously unexplored caves. The caves were assessed for their potential to be used in Arctic climate change research. Through exploration ofthe caves, it was possible to establish that cave mineral deposits (speleothems) are present from which records ofpast climate change can be constructed. Such records are critically important for placing present Arctic climatechange in the context of natural variability, and for providing information about the Arctic response to a warmerworld. Furthermore, speleothem records are likely to cover time periods beyond the limit of the Greenland icecores, thus providing completely new knowledge about past Arctic climate. In addition to the exploration andpalaeoclimate research, the project also conducted a number of interdisciplinary projects including modernpalynology, entomology and microbiology.Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung 10.55776/Y1162Version of recor
Lehrern Lehrerinnen

Attack surface reduction in a Docker environment by tracing Linux capabilities with eBPF programs
With the popularity of cloud solutions, container virtualization has become one of the most important technologies of the recent years. However, the direct access to the kernel is supposed to have a negative impact on security. Docker provides multiple features to secure the kernel, hardware resources and other containers. One of these features allows administrators to configure the Linux capabilities containers may use and therefore determines whether certain privileged actions can be executed by the containers. However, this feature is rarely used as it requires knowledge of the capabilities an application needs. Docker currently has no means to analyse which capabilities are needed by a container. Therefore, this thesis suggests a mechanism to generate a list of required capabilities for any given Docker container. This is done by tracing the capabilities that have been used on the Docker host with extended Berkley-Packet-Filter programs and assigning them to a container. Furthermore, an experiment is performed to observe the reduced capabilities and examine whether the reduction of capabilities has a negative impact on the functionality of the container. Additionally, the importance of Linux capabilities in the prevention of exploits is examined by executing different exploits in containers with different capabilities. The experiment shows that most of the Docker default capabilities are not necessary for the tested containers and the service provided by the applications is not disturbed by the reduced capability set. Furthermore, it can be observed that most kernel exploits are already prevented by using the default capabilities.by: Florian ParzerMasterarbeit Fachhochschule Technikum Wien 202
Effects of Open Strategy on individual commitment and ownership : Leon Paul Hierl
This thesis investigates how Open Strategy practices along the dimensions of transparency and inclusion impact individual employee commitment and ownership in strategy processes, considering the role of personality traits. Despite the growing interest in Open Strategy, previous research has not sufficiently addressed the individual-level outcomes commitment and ownership and the potential moderating role of personality traits. To address this gap, a 2×2 between-subjects lab experiment was conducted, using a fictional scenario, manipulating transparency through strategy presentations and inclusion through crowdsourcing. The quantitative study measured the individual commitment and ownership alongside the Big Five personality trait model. The empirical results show, that both dimensions of Open Strategy have a positive impact on individual commitment and ownership. Unexpectedly, the combination of both high transparency and high inclusion did not result in the strongest positive effect on the two dependent variables. Additionally, the study found no significant moderating effect of personality traits between Open Strategy practices and induvial commitment and ownership, indicating, that Open Strategy is widely applicable, independent of personality types. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of Open Strategy and its effect on individuals and offers practical insights for organizations, seeking to increase strategic engagement trough openness.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Handling communication of a family business during a scandal : exploring emotional and rational apology strategies in family-owned hospitality firms
This thesis examines how family-owned hospitality businesses can shape public perception through targeted crisis communication during internal controversies. Drawing on several theories, such as Social Identity Theory and Socioemotional Wealth Theory, this thesis explores how emotional and rational apologies affect consumer perceptions of credibility, forgiveness, and reputation. Using a 2x2 experimental design, the survey manipulates the intensity of family branding and the type of apology presented in a crisis scenario. Results indicate that rational apologies are generally perceived as more credible and lead to higher forgiveness than emotional ones. Additionally, individuals who recognized a stronger family brand rated the company more favorably, regardless of the objective manipulation. However, the interaction effects between branding and apology strategy were not significant, but the findings underscore the importance of stakeholder perception in crisis communication. This quantitative study contributes to research on crisis response in family firms and offers theoretical implications for managing a family brand reputation under threat.
Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A / Decellularized extracellular matrix and polyurethane vascular grafts have positive effects on the inflammatory and pro-thrombotic state of aged endothelial cells
In vitro assessment of small-diameter synthetic vascular grafts usually uses standard cell culture conditions with early-passage cells. However, these conduits are mainly implanted in elderly patients and are subject to complex cellular interactions influenced by age and inflammation. Understanding these factors is central to the development of vascular grafts tailored to the specific needs of patients. In this study, the effects of aged endothelial cells subjected to pro- and anti-inflammatory agents and cultivated on a newly developed biodegradable electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane/poly(urethane-urea) blend (TPU/TPUU), on clinically available expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE), and on decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) grafts were investigated. Young and aged endothelial cells were exposed to pro- and anti-inflammatory agents and characterized by morphology, migration capacity, and gene expression. In addition, the cells were seeded onto the various graft materials and examined microscopically alongside gene expression analyses. When exposed to pro-inflammatory cytokines, young and aged cells demonstrated signs of endothelial activation. Cells seeded on ePTFE showed reduced attachment and increased expression of pro-inflammatory genes compared with the other materials. dECM and TPU/TPUU substrates provided better support for endothelialization with aged cells under inflammatory conditions compared with ePTFE. Moreover, TPU/TPUU showed positive effects on reducing pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory gene expression in endothelial cells. Our results thus emphasize the importance of developing new synthetic graft materials as an alternative for clinically used ePTFE
