A Hit of Hope (for when it gets really bad)
No full textIn 2018, Betsy Johnson’s life went sideways. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, had to undergo chemo and radiation, and was asked for a divorce she didn’t want. Betsy knew there were all kinds of things she could do to numb the pain, but she wanted to get better, not worse. She decided to walk through this crucible with hope and grit, and thus began these meditations.
To heal, we have to get real and name the mess, the fear, the pain. And we have to see a way forward. A way out. Or at least a way to sit while the storm crashes . . . because no storm in the history of the world has ever been able to hold the sky forever. Whatever you or someone you love are facing, these meditations can bring a hit of hope and help you not only to survive but to live light.

NSAIDs and Their Interactions with Bacterial Growth
Get PDFNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common medications that are frequently used to suppress symptoms of viral and bacterial infections. The increase in concern of antibiotic resistance has led researchers to study the effects of NSAIDs on bacterial growth or on common antibiotics. This study aims to determine whether commonly used NSAIDs, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, have any antibacterial properties that might help suppress bacterial growth. In conjunction, this study also looks to see whether the combination of NSAIDs and an antibiotic can further reduce bacterial growth than if an antibiotic is used alone. Our procedure consisted of lab-grown Escherichia coli (E. coli) that was mixed with ibuprofen (8ug/ml), acetaminophen (15ug/ml), or ampicillin at either 8 or 15ug/ml. These concentrations are based on typical blood serum levels of each respective drug. UV spectrophotometer was used to determine bacterial growth through absorbance values (600nm). The results show larger absorbance values (meaning greater bacterial growth) when ibuprofen and acetaminophen are present. Data also shows that when NSAIDs are used in combination with ampicillin, absorbance values would be greater than if ampicillin was used alone. Possible mechanisms leading to these results could include horizontal gene transfer in E. coli or inhibiting the antibiotic effects of ampicillin. Future research should focus on determining the primary mechanism NSAIDs use to promote bacterial growth or inhibit antibiotics
Crafting Affect through Memory: Venezuelan Narratives of Belonging and Exclusion in Chile
Get PDFThe economic and political crisis in Venezuela has led to a large influx of Venezuelans living abroad, and Chile is a significant receiving country. By analyzing ethnographic interview data as well as literature on the meanings of home and belonging, I argue that the element of loss experienced by many Venezuelan emigrants and everyday exclusions in Chile combine in narratives highlighting longing, uncertainty, and alienation. Venezuelan migrants articulate a duality between wanting to return to the country that cannot provide a home for them and being excluded in the country that can provide a home for them. As a result, ideas of home and belonging juxtapose their experiences in Chile
The Role and Characteristic of Love in 1 Corinthians 13
Get PDFIn this paper, I discuss the role and characteristics of Love in 1 Corinthians 13. Before going into detailed treatment of this topic, I sought to clarify why Paul writes this letter, and the coherent unity of the letter. I also recognize that it is necessary to clarify the term ‘Love’ in the context of First Corinthians. It is equally important to discern the thematic weight and the position of chapter 13 in the context of the whole epistle. I utilize the structural criticism which considers the chapter in question as the central part of the ‘sandwiched’ construction between chapters 12 and 14. Chapter 12 outlines the principal importance of the various gifts: while chapter 14 articulates the phenomenon of tongues and the relationship to transmitting the Word into the world. In considering the central theme of the paper, I seek to explore the indispensable role of ‘Love’ among other essential Spiritual gifts; without Love, Faith and Hope and Good works are of empty significance. My inquiry into this topic led me to the inevitable analyzing and discussing the characteristics of Love. It is interesting to note that there is a structural, internal technique utilized by Paul. It can be deduced that he used a particular system of combining two positives, eight negatives, and then five more favorable terms to do justice to the concept of Love. In the final part of the exposition, I concentrate on expounding the eternal nature of Love and its surpassing quality compared to other gifts of the Spirit. After analyzing the role and nature of Love in the central section of my analysis, I mention the position of 1 Corinthians 13 in the Church’s current life, especially in Pope Francis’s teachings. Specifically, it is my purpose to shed light upon the concept of Love from a modern Christian literary/theological point of view. Ultimately, I was able to develop a basis of New Testament understanding and find important resonance within the primary theme and internal thought of 1 Cor. 13 and two recent Apostolic documents: Amoris Laetitia and Fratelli Tutti
