    Gonzalez, Tangen and LeCompte will held a panel discussion moderated by Jessie Bazan. Gonzalez is a 2014 graduate of the College of Saint Benedict and a 2019 graduate of Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary. She recently spoke for the Diocesan Ministry Day celebration focusing on “the importance of cocreating a community that sees, listens and advocates for one another.” Tangen is a writer, coach, educator and congregational organizer in Minneapolis. His work focuses on community life, community organizing, social action and the life of faith through a Benedictine lens. LeCompte is a 1999 SJU alumnus and for more than 25 years has led religious groups in the fight to alleviate poverty, address global conflict and promote human rights

    Report of Faculty and Academic Affairs Staff Responses to IEJ FFPP Survey on Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    In November 2021, the Joint Faculty Senate (JFS) Committees on Inclusion, Equity, and Justice (IEJ) and Family Friendly Policies and Practices (FFPP) administered a survey to assess faculty and Academic Affairs staff members’ experiences during the pandemic and to inform future recommendations for policy responses to crisis that are both family friendly and advance inclusion, equity, and justice for faculty and staff. IEJ and FFPP worked to collect a large sample of respondents. The Joint Faculty Assembly (JFA) Chair and Vice Chair sent the survey to the Official Announcements - CSB/SJU Faculty list three times. The survey was also sent to the AcademicAffairs@CSB/SJU.edu list. The survey was posted on the Teams for all librarians and shared twice in the Buzz. Members of the IEJ and FFPP shared it with Academics Affairs staff and asked them to share it with their colleagues. 143 people responded to the survey–41 staff and 102 faculty. This sample includes 41% of tenure/tenure track faculty, 10.5% of term/adjunct faculty, 41% of Academic Affairs administrative staff and 27% of Academic Affairs support staff. The survey results reflect the perspectives of respondents who chose to complete the survey

    The following poems are meditations about the growth students experience during the learning process. I utilize trees as an analogy for pedagogical development. References to the outward, circular expansion of trees are analogous to the physical actions performed in a learning task. References to upward growth signify the simultaneous, invisible ascent undertaken by the learner to better understand his or her own identity. The series illustrates a four-part learning cycle. 1) Invitation: I wonder if the moments of curiosity in students is an innate response from within the individual when they sense an informational experience that will fill a pedagogical void. This ‘calling’ to know more is not only about external information (outward growth); it is also to understand a yet undiscovered mystery within themselves (upward growth). 2) Play: In this stage, the student has heeded the invitation to explore a curiosity that has resonated between the external and internal worlds he experiences. I suggest play as one way to make sense of this dual experience of being. Through play, one embodies a story; a primary function of which is to move through being and becoming. 3) Integration: Ultimately, if the student continues to pursue this curiosity, it may give birth to a unique way of synthesizing one’s environment. Externally, this talent may be readily apparent but its purpose is also to discover and integrate the incredible depths within himself. 4) Return: Should the student choose to tread the dark wood and also have proper guidance along the way, he will return as one who has not only mastered the content task at hand but also someone with a greater understanding of his own character. He has descended into the death experience of the unknown and is reborn to a larger experience of himself

    Two Methods of Forecasting the Spread of Disease Using R\u3csub\u3e0\u3c/sub\u3e Coefficient and Gradient-Descent

    In 2020, COVID-19 became a global pandemic and has been negatively impacting the world ever since. One of the ways to help control the spread of disease is to forecast its growth. Forecasting the spread of disease, though a daunting task, is necessary when a pandemic happens as it could help create social policies that could potentially mitigate the effects of the disease. This research aims to provide two disease prediction methods: the R0-based method and the gradient-descent method. The R0-based method produces short-term predictions by simulating the mobility of residents and utilizing the R0 coefficient. The gradientdescent method maps the linear regression model onto non-linear model in order to fit the exponential growth of the disease. Experimental results show that the R0-based method is accurate at forecasting during pandemic outbreaks. The gradient-descent method is able to study the spread of epidemics on a city-to-city scale through transport network, but with less accuracy than the R0-based technique

    The Effects of Climate Change on the Transmission of Lyme Disease

    Lyme disease currently affects approximately 300,000 people annually in the United States, but climate change threatens to increase this number. Rising temperatures, humidity, and levels of rainfall are impacting the relationship and interactions between the bacterium that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), its vectors, and associated hosts. Climate change models predict a northward expansion of these disease-carrying vectors and hosts into new territories in North America, as formerly unsuitable territories become more hospitable, most notably in Canada. Human exposure to the bacteria through the bite of an infected tick can lead to the characteristic symptoms of Lyme disease, such as a skin rash, fever, headache, chills and in severe cases encephalitis and polyneuropathy. Therefore, this public health concern will also expand to new populations and better mitigation strategies will be necessary

    Perceptual, Decisional, and Motor Effects in Speeded Choice Decisions

    The goal of this study is to examine how individuals use perceptual, cognitive, and motor processes when making speeded decisions for visual stimuli. Participants performed a speeded choice decision task for simple shapes presented for a short duration (20 ms) or a longer duration (80 ms) to either the left or right side of a central fixation. In Experiment 1, participants pressed a key positioned to the right for “square” stimuli and a key positioned to the left for “circle” stimuli, effectively creating both location-congruent and location-incongruent stimulus-response mappings. In Experiment 2, response keys were aligned vertically rather than horizontally. Results for both experiments showed a duration x response mapping interaction effect, with faster correct responses when the stimulus was on the same side as the response key. However, this effect was only observed on short duration trials. These findings suggest when perceptual information is poor, individuals rely more on spatial-motor information to make quick decisions. In contrast, when perceptual information is strong, individuals rely less on spatial-motor information. These findings also show that location-congruency biases are modulated by the perceptual quality of stimuli
