Phi Beta Kappa Induction Ceremony, 2023
Theta of Minnesota, the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, welcomed 43 students as new members during the chapter’s annual Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. The ceremony and reception were held in Upper Gorecki at CSB and included opening remarks by the president of CSB and SJU, Dr. Brian Bruess; an overview of the history of the Society by Chapter Historian Derek Moore; the initiation of new members, led by Chapter President Laura Taylor; and an address by professor of economics and resident member of the chapter, Dr. Louis Johnston, entitled “Telling Stories.”
Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 by several students at the College of William and Mary. It is considered the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society and champions undergraduate excellence in the liberal arts. There are currently 293 chapters at leading colleges and universities nationwide.
The CSB and SJU chapter was established in 2009. As the eighth Phi Beta Kappa chapter established in Minnesota, it was named “Theta” after the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet. This is the 14th cohort of students who have been inducted into the chapter. Protein Engineering of a Fluorescent Watermelon Malate Dehydrogenase
Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) is an enzyme that is prevalent in many metabolic processes, such as the Krebs cycle and the citric acid cycle4. It reversibly forms oxaloacetate and NADH from (S)-malate and NAD+,1. Tryptophan fluorescence would be ideal to monitor conformational changes of MDH, but watermelon glycosomal MDH does not contain any tryptophan amino acids4. The research question being tested here is whether or not it is possible to mutate MDH to contain a tryptophan while still retaining native-like specific activity. This research question has not been addressed as a literature search has shown no research has been done to mutate Trp residues into wgMDH (watermelon). The mutant designed would be F353W. The factors that helped with the selection would be the similarity in shape to Trp as well as being distant from the active site, factors that are important towards maintance of native-like activity. The forward and reverse primer was first designed for 353W. The criteria that was provided for successful mutagenesis would be to have C or G at the end of both forward and reverse primer, to be 25-45 bases in length, and to have a melting temperature of over 78 degrees C using the QuickChange Site-Directed Mutagenesis Kit from Agilent Technologies. The reaction mixture was treated for DPN-1 and transformed into competent cells. Mutant colonies were picked and mutant protein was synthesized overnight in LB AMP. Five replicas of the mutant were produced and the plasmid was extracted. The five replicas were sequenced and will be used for further research, such as the subsequent protein production and purification of the mutant protein. The impact of this research would help with the further research towards binding for MDH including substrate binding, another enzyme binding, ligand binding and other research related to binding. Adding Trp would give the ability to track MDH and it would help track the conformational changes as conformational changes control diverse cellular processes, like signal transduction

Impact of Physical Activity Levels on College Student Depression, Anxiety, and Stress
A moderate to high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress have been found in undergraduate students. Physical activity has been shown to decrease anxiety, depression, and stress. Examining the impacts of physical activity on the mental health of college students might show to be beneficial. PURPOSE: To assess if self-reported physical activity levels impact depression, anxiety, and stress levels in college students. METHODS: A total of 92 college students from private institutions in central Minnesota completed an online survey. The survey collected demographics including age, gender, height, weight, and year in school. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess physical activity and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS21) was used to assess depression, anxiety, and stress. The IPAQ and DASS21 surveys were scored and participants were placed into three groups based on reported MET-minutes per week. Groups were categorized as low physical activity (LPA), moderate physical activity (MPA), and high physical activity (HPA). All three subscales of the DASS21 we utilized measuring depression, anxiety, and stress. A one-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the physical activity levels and depression, anxiety, and stress. A Fisher’s Least Significant Difference (LSD) post-hoc test was conducted. RESULTS: There was a significant main effect of physical activity on depression, F(2, 89) = 7.958, p \u3c .001, specifically between the LPA (11.4 ± 10.6) and HPA (5.5 ± 5.3) groups, p \u3c .05 and between the MPA (11.3 ± 7.7) and HPA (5.5 ± 5.3) groups, p \u3c .001. There was no statistical significance between groups for anxiety, F(2, 89) = 1.127, p = .329 or stress, F(2, 89) = 1.520, p = .224. CONCLUSION: Individuals who were in the HPA group reported the lowest depression scores, suggesting that if students participate in physical activity for approximately 3 days of vigorous activity or 7 days of combined walking, moderate-intensity, and high intensity-intensity activities a week then they would have less depression symptoms
Effects of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Following Eccentric Exercise on Soreness and Heart Rate Variability
BACKGROUND: The use of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) may provide relief from delayed onset muscle soreness due to strenuous lower body exercise. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 20 minutes of IPC following strenuous eccentric exercise on heart rate variability (HRV) and perceived soreness (PS). METHODS: 10 subjects (aged 21.2 +/- .4) who did not regularly participate in resistance training completed 2 trials, no less than 1 week apart. Each exercise session consisted of a 5-minute warmup followed by 3 sets of a superset of 5 Nordic hamstring curls (5 seconds eccentric) and isometric split squats (up to 1 minute each leg). All participants completed both the control and treatment sessions. For the IPC treatment session, participants wore IPC pants and sat on a treatment table with their backs against the wall at 90 degrees for 20 minutes while the pants administered 80 mmHg of pressure. HRV and PS were measured at baseline (morning of each session), 24hr and 48hr following each session. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between treatments for HRV over time (p = .33). However, significant differences were found between treatments for PS over time (p \u3c .05). CONCLUSION: IPC use following strenuous eccentric exercise did not improve HRV, but did have significant positive effects on PS. A longer treatment may be needed to see results in HRV
Solidarity in Time of Armed Conflict. Women’s Patterns of Solidarity in Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Camps in Darfur, Western Sudan
This study, a vital part of a Ph.D. thesis, delves into the prolonged armed conflict\u27s impact in Darfur, which has resulted in severe loss of assets and lives, disrupted livelihoods, and food insecurity. Among the most vulnerable are internally displaced women, primary targets of violence due to their caregiving roles and responsibilities. Addressing the gap in existing literature, this research explores the meanings, practices, experiences, and representations of solidarity among women residing in the Abu-Shouk IDP camp. Challenging conventional perceptions, the study highlights women\u27s competencies and strengths, empowering them to develop unique coping strategies within the conflict context. It uncovers the significance of solidarity as a force of resilience and collective support. The insights shared emphasize the transformative potential of empowering displaced women and fostering positive change in conflict-affected communities
