The Personality Profile of Republican Presidential Contender Chris Christie
This is a report of the results of an indirect assessment, in 2015, of the personality of former New Jersey governor (2010–2018) Chris Christie, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon. Christie ran unsuccessfully for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination and in June 2023 declared his candidacy in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Psychodiagnostically relevant data pertaining to Christie were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Christie’s primary personality patterns were found to be Dominant/controlling, supplemented by secondary Ambitious/confident and Dauntless/adventurous patterns and subsidiary Outgoing/congenial and Contentious/resolute features.
Dominant leaders enjoy the power to direct others and to evoke obedience and respect; they are tough and unsentimental and often make effective leaders.
Ambitious leaders are characteristically self-confident, competitive, daring, bold, charming, and skilled at winning others over to their causes and purposes; they easily assume leadership roles, expect others to recognize their special qualities, and may act as though entitled.
Dauntless leaders are adventurous, individualistic, daring personalities resistant to deterrence and inclined to take calculated risks; they may be inclined to shade the truth or skirt the law.
Outgoing leaders are dramatic attention-getters who thrive on being the center of social events and are confident in their social skills and ability to charm and influence others.
Contentious leaders are individualistic and independent, tend to be outspoken or unconventional, and are frequently unhappy with the status quo.
The blend of personality patterns in Christie’s profile constitutes a composite personality type that may be described as that of a high-dominance, self-confident, risk-taking extravert.
Of particular note, the amalgam of Dominant (aggressive) and Contentious (negativistic) patterns in Christie’s profile suggests benign elements of Millon’s abrasive negativist syndrome. For these personalities, minor frictions easily escalate into personal confrontations and power struggles. They are quick to spot inconsistencies in others’ actions or ethical standards and adept at constructing arguments that amplify those contradictions. They characteristically take the moral high ground, dogmatically and contemptuously expose their antagonists’ perceived hypocrisy, and scornfully turn on those who cross their path
Unveiling Novel Avenues in mTOR-Targeted Therapeutics: Advancements in Glioblastoma Treatment
The mTOR signaling pathway plays a pivotal and intricate role in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma, driving tumorigenesis and proliferation. Mutations or deletions in the PTEN gene constitutively activate the mTOR pathway by expressing growth factors EGF and PDGF, which activate their respective receptor pathways (e.g., EGFR and PDGFR). The convergence of signaling pathways, such as the PI3K-AKT pathway, intensifies the effect of mTOR activity. The inhibition of mTOR has the potential to disrupt diverse oncogenic processes and improve patient outcomes. However, the complexity of the mTOR signaling, off-target effects, cytotoxicity, suboptimal pharmacokinetics, and drug resistance of the mTOR inhibitors pose ongoing challenges in effectively targeting glioblastoma. Identifying innovative treatment strategies to address these challenges is vital for advancing the field of glioblastoma therapeutics. This review discusses the potential targets of mTOR signaling and the strategies of target-specific mTOR inhibitor development, optimized drug delivery system, and the implementation of personalized treatment approaches to mitigate the complications of mTOR inhibitors. The exploration of precise mTOR-targeted therapies ultimately offers elevated therapeutic outcomes and the development of more effective strategies to combat the deadliest form of adult brain cancer and transform the landscape of glioblastoma therapy
Interventions to Increase STEM Retention of Undergraduate Women: A Literature Review
The lack of retention of women in STEM majors and careers has been an ongoing issue for years. With stunted percentages of women in participation, representation, interest, pay and more, resolving this problem is necessary. This systematic literature review focuses on interventions that are aiming to increase women’s STEM self-efficacy, performance, sense of belonging, identification, interest, retention, and positivity while decreasing STEM stereotypes and implicit gender biases. Studies were included if they used an experimental or quasi-experimental design in college students within the past 15 years. A total of 26 studies were included in this review. Across the research reviewed, creating strong peer relationships, providing role models women can self-identify with, creating gender-neutral environments, and providing education about gender biases and stereotypes within STEM was found to be the most promising in dismantling barriers that women in STEM fields face. Based on these findings, we will make recommendations for elements of successful programming that can be implemented at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University
The Personality Profile of 2024 Republican Presidential Contender Ron DeSantis
This is a brief report of the results of an indirect psychodiagnostic assessment of the personality of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a contender for the Republican nomination in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.
Psychodiagnostically relevant data about DeSantis were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Preliminary analysis indicates that DeSantis’s primary personality patterns are Dominant/controlling and Ambitious/confident, supplemented by secondary Retiring/reserved and Contentious/resolute patterns and subsidiary Conscientious/respectful features.
The prominence of the Dominant, Ambitious, and Retiring patterns in DeSantis’s profile is indicative of a high-dominance introvert political personality type with an expansionist leadership orientation and – because of a distinct Conscientious tendency – an incrementalist personal political style in consummating his policy objectives.
Dominant leaders enjoy the power to direct others and to evoke obedience and respect; they are tough and unsentimental and often make effective leaders. They view themselves as self-reliant, unyielding, and strong and are disinclined to experience and express compassion. This personality pattern encapsulates the “high-dominance” component of DeSantis’s personality composite and predisposes him to an “expansionist” leadership orientation, rooted in a strong power motive.
Ambitious leaders are characteristically self-confident, competitive, daring, bold, charming, and skilled at winning others over to their causes and purposes; they easily assume leadership roles, expect others to recognize their special qualities, and may act as though entitled. This personality pattern contributes to and potentiates the “expansionist” tendency in DeSantis’s leadership orientation.
Retiring (introverted) leaders tend to be aloof and solitary, generally appear complacent and untroubled, and rarely express inner feelings or thoughts, with a corresponding tendency to be somewhat deficient in the ability to recognize the needs or feelings of others. They prefer distant or limited involvement with others, tend not to develop strong interpersonal ties, are most comfortable when left alone, and tend to work in a slow, quiet, methodical manner. This personality pattern constitutes the “introvert” component of DeSantis’s personality composite.
Contentious leaders are individualistic, headstrong, often cynical personalities that tend to take issue with the status quo and are quick to challenge rules, sometimes with single-minded commitment to a cause. Under favorable conditions, they are productive and constructively independent‑minded, willing to speak out to remedy troublesome issues. However, under trying circumstances, they may harbor resentment without expressing it directly, may view themselves as lacking in interpersonal skills, and may appear to be awkward or distracted.
Conscientious leaders are dutiful and diligent, have a strong work ethic, are attentive to detail, strive to uphold rules and regulations, and are loyal to their causes. They are adept at crafting public policy, but may lack the retail political skills required to consummate their policy objectives and are more technocratic than visionary. They tend to be formal, proper, and dignified in their interactions with the public.
This is a preliminary report of a study currently in progress. Data collection will continue through the 2024 U.S. presidential election cycle and DeSantis’s profile will be refined and updated if warranted by ongoing data analysis
Transition and Transcendence: An Approach to Constructive Transgender Theology with Insights from Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza and Karl Rahner
Recent attempts at theology impacting transgender individuals from the Catholic bishops in the United States have not only angered and disheartened many but have also failed to address transgender individuals as human persons. Relying on motifs devoid of scientific dialogue, the bishops’ attempts at applying theology to individuals of transgender experience ignores decades of research in both the worlds of the physical and social sciences.
This paper is an attempt to frame the discussion around transgender individuals in a space where theology and science are able to dialogue for their mutual enrichment. Drawing from the experience of the author as a woman of transgender experience while simultaneously in an active ministerial role within a Roman Catholic parochial context humanizes this endeavor and provides necessary context for a theology from below
