Theorizing Social Movement Practices
Get PDFThis essay contributes to the systematic and expansive exploration of social movement practices by looking more closely at symbolic and instrumental practices, on the one hand, and works of mercy and structural transformation practices, on the other. The categories we have discussed, while far from perfect, provide valuable tools to understand social movement practices and thus movements in general. We argue that attention to practices can strengthen the systematic, comparative analysis of social movements both by calling attention to previously under-studied types of activities and by illuminating the relationships between different types of practices

Get PDFToday we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life support system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own ... This will happen if we see the need to revive our sense of belonging to a larger family of life (Maathai, 2010). According to John Paul II, the “threat of ecological breakdown is teaching us the extent to which greed and selfishness - both individual and collective - are contrary to the order of creation, an order which is characterized by mutual interdependence.”(John Paul II, 1990). We have clearly shown in previous chapters that human beings are the authors as well as victims of the ecological crisis. If they are part of the problem, they must also be part of to the solution. “No one can face life in isolation. We need a community that supports and helps us, in which we can help one another to keep looking ahead” (Francis, 2020, No. 7). We shall discuss the ecological solidarity framework as a new paradigm vis a vis our responsibility towards each other as human beings and the ecosystem at large. The African cultural worldview would be a useful guide in the search for a sustainable development. In the final analysis, ecological solidarity outlines two moral issues which are essential to sustainable development: firstly, an ecological awareness that recognises the interconnectedness of human life and other forms of life in the ecosystem. And secondly, an obligation to be responsible for other human beings and the ecosystem (Azetsop, S.J. and Conversi, eds., 2022)

No full textIlya Kaminsky was born in Odessa, former Soviet Union, in 1977, and arrived to the U.S. in 1993, when his family was granted asylum by the government. He is the author of Deaf Republic (Graywolf Press, 2019), Dancing in Odessa (Tupelo Press, 2004, and Musica Humanna (Chapiteau Press, 2002), and co-editor and co-translator of many other books. He is on the creative writing faculty at Princeton University.
Valzhyna Mort is the author of Factory of Tears, Collected Body, and her most recent book, Music for the Dead and Resurrected. She is a recipient of the Lannan Foundation Fellowship, the Bess Hokin Prize from Poetry, Amy Clampitt fellowship, the Gulf Coast translation prize and the Glenna Luschei Prairie Schooner Award. Born in Minsk, Belarus, she is the editor of Something Indecent: Poems Recommended by Eastern European Poets offering a conversation about how Eastern European poets view themselves, their contemporaries, their century, and the place of their region in the millennia. She teaches at Cornell University and writes in English and Belarusian.
Nikola Madžirov is the author of Remnants of Another Age and Relocated Stones, which received the Hubert Burda European Poetry Award and the prestigious Miladinov Brothers Award. He was awarded the Studentski Zbor Award for Locked in the City and the Aco Karamanov prize for Somewhere Nowhere. Born into a family of Balkan War refugees in 1973 in Strumica, Macedonia, Madzirov has gone on to participate in many international literary festivals and events in the United States, Latin America, and Europe, and he has received several international awards and fellowships
