Saint John\u27s Prep Navigation Map
This map was a project commissioned by Jill Pauly, Director of Communications at St. John’s Prep School. The intended purpose of the map is to assist new students and first-time visitors with finding buildings and fields. Places such as Tower Field, Sexton Commons, and Thomas Hall/Life Safety were desired focuses as they are further from the main prep school building and thus more difficult to find without guidance
Closing Casinos during COVID-19\u27s First Wave: Comparing Tribal and First Nation Pandemic Responses to State and Provincial Executive Orders
Our project compared Tribal and First Nation casinos’ responses to the first wave of COVID-19 to their neighboring provincial and state governments. We evaluated whether Tribal and First Nation casinos closed earlier, at the same time as, or after their neighboring provincial and state governments issued orders closing bars and restaurants. We also evaluated whether Tribal and First Nation casinos reopened earlier, at the same time as, or after neighboring provincial and state governments began lifting restrictions on bars and restaurants. We found that in the United States, the median Tribal casino closure date was 1 day before the surrounding state closed bars and restaurants and the median Tribal casino reopening date was 21 days after the surrounding state allowed partial bar and restaurant reopenings. In Canada, the median First Nation casino closure date was 3 days before the surrounding province ordered business closures and the median reopening date was 27 days after the surrounding province allowed partial business reopenings
Fight to Ignite: The Impacts of Climate Change on Prescribed Burning in Pine Forests
Prescribed burning is a strategy that has been used to manage the health of forest ecosystems for thousands of years. While these practices have certainly evolved over time, recent impacts of climate change are threatening the future feasibility of implementing fire in forest management altogether. This ecological process is essential to restoring and maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem as fire acts as a catalyst by returning nutrients to soil and promoting healthy regrowth. Prescribed burning prepares forestlands for reforestation by destroying weeds and other competitive species so that native and fire-dependent species can reproduce. This process also lessens the fuel load of a forest by burning excess shrubbery, mitigating wildfire risks. However, increasing impacts of climate change in recent years are creating unsuitable conditions to execute controlled burns in necessary areas. Specifically, it is necessary to consider the humidity, wind speed, and air temperature to ensure the weather conditions are within an appropriate ‘burn window.’ In this study, I examine the historical and cultural significance of prescribed fire, as well as the environmental and climatic components that are required for a burn to take place. It is imperative to understand both components with the aim of implementing thoughtful and effective solutions. Prescribed burning is a management strategy that now requires new alterations in order to remain effective as the climate changes

Ecophysiological implications of low lignin in eastern leatherwood (\u3ci\u3eDirca palustris\u3c/i\u3e L.)
Dirca palustris L. (eastern leatherwood) is an understory shrub found throughout much of eastern North America. Dirca palustris wood has a low concentration of lignin, which is a molecule that grants structural rigidity to cell walls. The branches of D. palustris are thus remarkably flexible, but their low lignin content could cause greater vulnerability to water stress. We examined the conductivity, vessel anatomy, and field water potential of D. palustris and conducted ecological surveys. The data showed that D. palustris was not experiencing substantial drought-induced dysfunction in the field, even during an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Its water potentials in the field were less negative than water potentials that caused substantial embolism in the lab, and it continued to photosynthesize and conduct water throughout the summer. We also found that D. palustris had small vessels, which may help it resist water stress. Ecological surveys showed that 15% of surveyed plants survived litterfall from canopy trees, almost all without damage, demonstrating a possible advantage of the low lignin content and flexible branches seen in D. palustris. These characteristics may allow D. palustris to continue to thrive in increasingly challenging environments brought on by climate change
