When Peace Interventions Become Elusive: The Convoluted Darfur Conflict
Get PDFThe conflict in Darfur, rooted in longstanding tensions among ethnic and political groups in western Sudan, is marked by widespread violence, displacement, and human rights abuses. Whereas there have been concerted efforts by successive governments and different local, regional, and national stakeholders to resolve these conflicts through various transitional justice and traditional mechanisms, these interventions have largely been ineffective, often resulting in accusations of bias and unequal treatment by the Khartoum government. This article seeks to evaluate conflict intervention efforts by different actors such as the Sudan government, the African Union (AU), Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), regional governments, and the United Nations (UN). The discussions will highlight both successes and failures of peace interventions in Darfur, the complexity of the conflict ecology in Sudan and the region, and the need to bring internal and external stakeholders to the negotiation table for sustainable peace
Darfur’s Armed Movements: Evolution of Roles and Relations with Actors in light of the April 15 War
Get PDFThis research comes in eight main sections, comprising a historical background of the conflicts in Sudan in general and Darfur in particular; an intro to armed movements active in Darfur the research team have monitored; and an extensive analysis of interviews the team conducted with members of the armed movements, independent actors and the native administrations.
Focusing on the Darfuri armed movements’ evolution of roles during the April 15 War, an analysis of respondents’ responses highlights varying takes on the impact of the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA). While some deems it futile as to resolve conflicts, others admittedly view it as a step conducive for the attainment of peace. The research also incorporates extensive analysis of armed movements’ relations with different actors, vetting their relationship with the native administrations, civil society, and the political parties in Darfur, as well as the political/military coordination between the movements among themselves

Get PDFThe National Council has accepted an invitation from the Delta Psi Chapter (Western Illinois University) to host the Society’s 47th Biennial Convention on WIU’s Quad Cities Campus – located in Moline, Illinois, on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The convention is scheduled for April 11–13, 2025, and planning is underway. The Friday afternoon through Sunday noon schedule is designed to minimize the number of class days that delegates would need to miss. The Quad Cities International Airport (MLI) serves the area. At this time, we encourage chapters to “save the date” and to start making plans for a delegate to attend. We welcome chapters to send more than one member if possible; chapter advisors are also welcome and encouraged to attend. In addition to being a lot of fun and a chance to expand networking—there will be field trip to explore the local geology on Saturday—the biennial conventions serve an important function in that the delegates set policy for SGE as a student-run organization. Your national officers advise and carry out the policies established at the national conventions. For this convention, the National Office will provide a 50. Chapter advisors participating in this meeting will receive $250 stipends. Stipends can be combined if your chapter would like to bring a group (e.g. – rent a van and travel together). Meals and lodging during the meeting will be provided. Complete details, including registration instructions, will be provided to chapters at a later date
