Get PDFThe Journal of Social Encounters mourns the loss, and celebrates the life, of the much-loved Bishop Paride Taban. We thank our authors below for sharing their reflections on him. In his memory, we also re-print an essay about him by Alberto Eisman Torres, A Beacon of Hope in a Troubled Context: Sketches of the Life of Mons. Paride Taban, Shepherd and Bridge-builder, an essay in our special collection on Peace Bishops. I was blessed to know Bisop Taban, and would see him in Nairobi and in Minnesota. One of his associates was a student of mine at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa who wrote his Master’s thesis on the Kuron Peace Village. I always will remember Bishop Taban’s warm, smiling face, his compassion and his gentle and engaging manner. He knew more about peacebuilding than many of us academics and practitioners may ever know, and many of us wanted to learn more from him. He was a true reflection of Christ, and dare I say, a saint. May we continue to learn from him and be inspired by his example. – Ron Pagnucc
Obstetric Education for Critical Care Nurses
Get PDFBackground The purpose of this study was to educate ICU nurses on the care of obstetric women in critical care through the use of a toolkit with intentions to increase knowledge and confidence.
Method The toolkit was created via the platform WordPress™ and topics were chosen based on the most common admission diagnoses found during the literature review. Data were collected via forms manager and voluntary participation among ICU nursing staff was obtained.
Results Mean scores from the pretest to the post-test showed improvement from 7.08 to 8.50 and the minimum and maximum scores increased from pretest to post-test supporting clinical significance in increased knowledge post intervention. From the pre- to post-confidence survey, overall confidence among nurses increased from a mean of 31.67-36.67 to 46.67-53.33.
Conclusion The project supports the hypothesis that the toolkit was clinically significant in improving knowledge and confidence among ICU nurses caring for obstetric patients

Get PDFThe April 15 War is frequently portrayed as a power struggle between two generals, a simplistic narrative that overlooks not only internal factors but also external dynamics and the agendas of foreign nations in Sudan. Numerous countries have vested interests in this resource-rich nation, a pivotal gateway to Africa with a strategic position overlooking the Red Sea facilitating over 12% of global trade. However, what exacerbates the situation is the leadership weakness and intense political polarization since 2019, following the downfall of the Inqaz regime.
Following the December Revolution, Sudan\u27s leadership lacked a cohesive foreign relations strategy. The pillars of power, including the Sudanese army, the Rapid Support Forces, and the Forces of Freedom and Change, each pursued their own connections, attempting to court favor with the Western world after decades of strained relations with Sudan government. Consequently, Sudan neglected its longstanding strategic partnerships with Russia and China, traditionally leveraged by Islamists.
Regionally, the conflict revealed biases among several regional actors, indicating the necessity for pre- war coordination and understandings among them.
Neither sides of the war has openly received support from any foreign nation. However, statements from African leaders, investigative reports, and analyses suggest varying degrees of external support for the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, both politically, and even militarily
Cosmic Partnership: Hildegard of Bingen’s vision of an integral ecology
Get PDFThough Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), Benedictine Abbess and polymath, canonized and proclaimed Doctor of the Church in 2012, has been named a patron of ecology, only fragments of her ecological philosophy exist. This article attempts to introduce Hildegard’s polyphonic work by outlining her theology of viriditas as the green thread that connects her cosmological, anthropological, and ethical theory and to show how it constructs the relationship between humanity and creation as a cosmic partnership. Hildegard\u27s striking visual style is not only inspired by her appreciation of the natural world, but deeply grounded in her theology. This theology entails an ethical obligation for humans to live in harmony with creation and to take on the task to become co-creators in God’s garden, culminating in a symphonic life in harmony with all creation. Thus, Hildegard offers not only a theory but also a practice towards an integral ecology
