She explores ways to motivate students to set challenging goals while being responsive to their individual needs.Sarah Rose Cavanagh is a psychologist, professor, and Senior Associate Director for Teaching and Learning at Simmons University, where she teaches classes on affective science and mental health, researches the intersections of emotion, motivation, and learning, and provides educational development for faculty. Sarah gives keynote addresses and workshops at a variety of colleges and national and international conferences, blogs for Psychology Today, and writes essays for venues like LitHub and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In her free time she enjoys devouring fiction, spending time by the sea with her canine and human daughters, and cooking up pescatarian meals for good friends

I Age 
 
Arthritis and aging make it hard,
I walk gingerly, with a cane, and walk
slow, bent forward, fear threats,
falls, fear denouement
I turn pages, my family albums
become a task.
But I can still bake and shake,
sugar cookies, sweet potato,
lemon meringue pies.
Alone, most of my time,
but never on Sundays,
friends and communion, 
United Church of Canada. 
I chug a few down,
love my Blonde Canadian Pale Ale,
Copenhagen long cut a pinch of snuff.
I can still dance the Boogie-woogie,
Lindy Hop in my living room,
with my nursing care home partner.
Aging has left me with youthful dimples, 
but few long-term promises.

Eyes Were Signals
Cerulean is sea
It’s vast sky, a canvas
painted and scattered with 
chrysanthemum clouds, sugar dusted
It’s cresting waves that froth in songs of
Salt, tangy with harmonious faithful calm
So why is it now
when I imagine your pools,
all I see are warning signals
begging for reprieve?
once was blind, but 
now I’m blue

Other things about Ireland
a dry evening finally. perfect
for bars with a patio.
it’s the wettest july
on record apparently
as far as I’m concerned
or can be bothered to look up
and pavements are wisping
the last of their water
like oil from a pan
on an induction
stovetop. fallon’s in town now
for the next two weekends.
has been sharing out greek
cigarettes. they come (a nice touch)
with these little certificates
promising quality
in much bigger font
than the obligate warnings
of cancer. he has always been
generous, and now his job’s also
quite good – based in brussels
with travel. and jack’s doing summer
work drafting out architecture
in an office halfway
between my place and the place
where he’s staying.
we each have four pints
and a couple of hamburgers
and the rhythm of things
becomes quickly the same
as it was.

SUNDAY SNOW
As we walked for the news
the world was changing,
no contending winds
the snow had full attention.
Each living thing was
donning its own decoration,
the hydrangea reborn
in white fluffy balls.
Coo of a dove served
complement to the falling.
We bought the last paper
another unforeseen blessing,
now home to earthly oatmeal
tea and fireplace.
We could just discern
our going footsteps
the boot treads unique,
our orbit complete.

The dying cat lies
beside the ditch, 
watches, listens
to the water flowing. 
Flowing like 
when inside
his momma
floating, 
dreaming, 
not dreaming.
Dreaming surrounded
by the womb of water
he closes his eyes
and listens
to her purr
rise louder.

step one: denial 
My body has left that small red car, 
Left the driveway, left the street, left the city. 
But my heart is still lingering there, 
shattered on the dark concrete 
with only the light of the streetlamp to prove its existence. 
“This isn’t real,” I repeat over and over again. 
He can’t be gone. We can’t be done. It’s us. 
The days drag on as if I am simply in slow motion, 
stuck in this loop of refusal, 
refusal to accept the absence of my favorite person in this world. 
I am merely existing; a body without a heart,
a mind without a soul. 
I left my heart on the sidewalk that night, 
and it’s been missing ever since.

Contributor Biographies
DALE LAUNDERVILLE, OSB
Dale Launderville is a monk of Saint John’s Abbey and Professor of Theology 
at the School of Theology and Seminary, and was formerly Dean of the School. 
He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Saint John’s University in 1973 and his 
Master of Divinity in 1979 before earning a Master of Arts in 1982 and Doctor 
of Philosophy in 1987 from The Catholic University of America. His areas of 
teaching and research include Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, especially the Book 
of Ezekiel and Book of Numbers, and History of Biblical Interpretation.
ANISABEL PALMA
Anisabel Palma is pursuing a Master of Divinity and a Certificate of Spiritual 
Direction at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary. Originally from 
México, she serves as Director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of New 
Ulm. Her commitment to married life, motherhood, and her experience as an 
immigrant shape her writings and ministry.
PATRICK RUSSELL
Patrick Russell has lived in multiple states. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 
Missions from Southern Nazarene University, a Master of Divinity from Olivet 
Nazarene University, and a Master of Arts in Orthodox Studies from Saint 
Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary before attending Saint John’s School 
of Theology and Seminary to pursue the Master of Theology. In his spare time 
he enjoys conversations about Eastern Orthodox theology or anything having to 
do with the Inklings. 
ANDRENIQUE D. ROLLE
Andrenique D Rolle grew up on the islands of Andros and New Providence in 
the Bahamas. She attended the College of Saint Benedict, where she completed 
her Bachelor of Arts in Theology in the Spring of 2023. She is now at the Saint 
John’s School of Theology and Seminary pursuing her theological interests. 
Andrenique enjoys cooking, creating media for Bible Study Sessions, traveling, 
and trying new things.

PAULINUS DAELI, OSC
Paulinus Daeli hails from Nias Barat, Indonesia, his birthplace. He is a seminarian 
for the Ordo Sanctae Crucis. In 2020, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 
Philosophy from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan, Bandung, Indonesia. He is 
presently working towards his Master of Arts in Theology at Saint John’s School of 
Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. In addition to his passion for 
theology, he takes pleasure in singing choral music and editing photos. 
RACHEL HENRY
Rachel Henry is a student in the Master of Arts in Ministry who hopes to 
become a chaplain. She grew up in Colorado and lived for many years in 
California, where she worked in communications. She likes to write, eat 
chocolate, play soccer, and spend time in nature and with people.
JACQUELINE LEITER, OSB
Jacqueline Leiter grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota and is a Benedictine sister from 
Saint Paul’s Monastery. She taught English as a Second Language to immigrants 
and learned many things from her young students. She enjoys reflecting on and 
writing about Benedictine and scriptural values and their current application in 
ministry, relationships, and spirituality. She also creates art as a visual metaphor to 
express and invite theological reflection. She is currently studying theology at the 
Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary.
KRISTYN DEMERS
Kristyn Demers was born in New Hampshire. She received her Bachelor of Arts 
in Elementary Education with a minor in Theology in the spring of 2022 from 
Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. She then completed a 
year of volunteering with the Franciscan Volunteer Ministry in Durham, NC. 
She is currently a first-year Master of Divinity candidate and is part of the 
Conversatio: Creating a Culture of Encounter program at Saint John’s School of 
Theology and Seminary.
GILBERT PEREZ
Gilbert Perez was born in Houston, Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Arts 
in theology with a minor in philosophy from Saint John’s University and is 
currently attending the School of Theology for the Master in Divinity in Lay 
Ministry. Gilbert also enjoys teaching theology to others, as well as hiking, 
cooking, and philosophy.

PHOEBE CARSTENS
Phoebe Carstens is from San Antonio, Texas, and is currently studying for the 
Master of Divinity program at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary. 
After graduating from Loyola University Chicago with degrees in Theology and 
Mathematics, they spent a year working on an organic farm. Now, in addition to 
studying, they work with undergraduate students at the campus ministry office at 
Saint John’s University and are a regular contributor for New Ways Ministry. They 
are passionate about eco-spirituality, waterfowl appreciation, and LGBTQ+ ministry. 
SCOTT COOPER
Scott Cooper was born in Lima, Ohio. He earned a Master of Arts in Theology 
in 2017 and a Master of Arts in Church Ministries in 2021 from Saint Mary’s 
Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore. He is currently a candidate for the Doctor of 
Philosophy in instructional leadership for changing populations at Notre Dame 
of Maryland University and is at Saint John’s University School of Theology 
and Seminary as a sabbatical participant. He is Professor of World Languages at 
Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland.
ANDREA FREY
Andrea Frey is a candidate for the Master of Arts in Theology and holds a 
Bachelor of Music from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She and 
her family live near Indianapolis where she serves as the Director of Music and 
Liturgy for a suburban parish.
ERIC KALIMBIRIRO, OSC
Eric Kalimbiriro is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He attended 
the Lycee Martyrs Baganda Catholic school of Ciherano and then the Crosier’s 
University of Mulo in North Kivu. He completed a Bachelor of Philosophy in 
the summer of 2021. He is now studying theology, concentrating in Systematic 
Theology, at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, 
Minnesota. Outside of his studies, he enjoys exploring the ideas and work of the 
Frankfurt School of Critical Theory.
SARAH SKROVE
Sarah Skrove was raised in Hutchinson, Minnesota. She is a senior at the 
College of Saint Benedict and is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in theology. After 
graduation, she plans to attend the Boston College Clough School of Theology and 
Ministry to pursue a Master of Divinity. She also enjoys reading, volunteering, 
learning to cook, and making new friends.

KATHLEEN A. CAHALAN
Kathleen A. Cahalan is professor of practical theology at Saint John’s University 
School of Theology and Seminary and director of the Collegeville Institute 
Seminars, a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and ecumenical research project 
that includes seminars on vocation across the lifespan, vocation and faith in the 
professions, and interfaith perspectives on vocation.
MAGGIE NADALIN
Maggie Nadalin is a 2023 graduate of the Saint John’s School of Theology and 
Seminary, having earned a Master in Theological Studies, concentrating in 
Liturgy.  She resides in Cleveland, Ohio.
EMILY HEIDICK
Emily Heidick grew up in Minnesota before completing her Bachelor of Arts 
in Elementary Education and Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers 
of Other Languages at Wheaton College. She was a third grade and English 
Learner teacher in Chicago before furthering her theological education in the 
Master of Theological Studies program. She is also the digital communications 
graduate assistant at Liturgical Press.
MELISSA TOVAR-GUERRERO
Melissa Tovar-Guerrero was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She has her Bachelor of 
Arts in Literary Studies and is an author, journalist, and has written and published 
two books: Retorno a Dorlebo, which is a collection of fantastic stories, and Los 
desprendimientos, her first publication, in which Melissa explores the ancient 
Japanese tradition of voluntary disappearances, known as jōhatsu. She is currently 
studying at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary for the Master in 
Theological Studies.
HANNAH MIERS
Hannah Miers was born in Rochester, Minnesota but she currently lives in 
Stewartville, Minnesota. She attended the College of Saint Benedict and Saint 
John’s University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Theology in the spring of 
2022. She is currently studying at the School of Theology and Seminary for the 
Master of Divinity in Lay Ministry. When she is not studying theology, Hannah 
really loves to go hiking, read romance and murder mysteries, and watch old 
classics and musicals!

CARRIE ONEIL-SMITH
Carrie ONeil-Smith is a candidate for Master of Arts in Theology at Saint 
John’s School of Theology and Seminary. She lives in Massachusetts with her 
husband of 32 years; together they have an adult son and daughter. Carrie enjoys 
sailing and gardening and is a Lay Associate of Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey 
in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Upon her graduation Carrie plans to work in 
spiritual care in a hospital setting.
HANG GEUM AUGUSTINE, OSB
Hang Geum Augustine is currently a non-degree seeking student at Saint 
John’s School of Theology and Seminary and is a monk of Saint John’s Abbey. 
Augustine previously attended the School of Theology, completing his Master 
of Arts in Liturgical Music with concentrations invocal performance and choral 
conducting. He also holds multiple Bachelor of Arts degrees in Law, Political 
Science and Economics, a Master of Laws, and a Juris Doctorate.
MARY L. PARKS
Mary L. Parks is an Master of Divinity candidate at Saint John’s School of 
Theology and Seminary. She is an oblate of Saint Benedict and currently serves 
as Program Associate for Saint Mary’s Clinical Pastoral Education Center in 
Duluth, Minnesota.
