Peace Bishop: Bishop Nicolas Djoma Lola -- Bishop of Tshumbé

    No full text
Fr. Nicolas Djomo Lola was appointed a bishop in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 1997 and immediately was thrust into a brutal war between Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire that lasted through 2003. That conflict exacerbated deadly ethnic conflicts in the eastern provinces of the Congo that continue to this day. Bishop Djomo, driven by his belief that Jesus Christ calls all people to build peace, and protect people from violence responded to this war and chaos in remarkable ways. He led a delegation of the Central Africa Bishops to advocate with the Presidents of Burundi, Rwanda and the DRC to end the inter-state wars. As President of the DRC Bishops’ Conference (CENCO) Bishop Djomo led a campaign to end the trafficking of conflict minerals that fueled the fighting in the East. He led a nationwide electoral education and monitoring program and then mounted an international advocacy campaign to ensure free and fair elections in 2011 and 2018

Barriers to Implementation of Practice Guidelines in Heart Failure

    Get PDF
In 2022, the most recent guidelines for care of the patient with heart failure (HF) were released by the American Heart Association (AHA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA). In summary, this group did not recommend fluid restriction for patients with heart failure, unless they are in the end stages of heart failure, and only if fluid restriction may be beneficial (Heidenreich et al., 2022). Despite this recommendation, some providers and nurses continue to restrict fluids. The aim of this DNP project, therefore, was to analyze barriers to implementation of best practices in heart failure management. In addition, the project sought to explore motivating factors that could result in practice improvement, and provide a pathway for implementing best practice in care of fluid needs of patients with heart failure. This was accomplished through in-depth interviews (n=5) across various interdisciplinary team members. Transcripts were reviewed in depth using inductive analysis (Percy et al., 2015). Three themes emerged: 1) individualizing fluid restriction; 2) organizational practice change is challenging; and 3) providers need to lead the movement toward change. Motivating factors that were identified in support of the practice change included widespread education across the organization. An important system change for this organization was to remove the fluid restriction from the inpatient order set

Gold mining in Darfur: Its role in the general economy, political conflicts and the current war

    Get PDF
Darfur has been shattered by a long chain of violent escalations, and numerous interpretations of reasons and recommendations for solutions have been put forward. Since the early 2010s, gold mining appeared as an additional element in ongoing conflicts and became a dominant aspect, not just as one of the financial pillars of the upcoming Rapid Support Forces under Dagalo family leadership, but also as a source of environmental pollution. Nevertheless, gold mining made its way only slowly into political analyses, and although its substantial role in Sudan\u27s recent history, including the current war, has now more often been recognized, it is often treated only for its broad geopolitical implications. We trace in this essay the development of gold mining in Darfur in more detail, show its impact on existing and new conflicts in the region, and give an outlook on its continuation under conditions of war. Based on our analysis, we also formulate an assessment of long-term consequences of these extractive activities

The Dynamics of the Resistance Committees (RCs) Movement Amid the Current Challenges of Democratic Transition in Sudan

    Get PDF
After the wave of protests that led to the fall of the former regime in April 2019 and the establishment of the Transitional Justice in August 2019, Sudan is undergoing transitional phases marked by significant political and social changes since 2018. The Sudanese Resistance Committees (RCs) have played important and crucial roles throughout the whole period since the breakthrough of the Revolution in Sudan in December 2018. Those roles are showcased starting from organizing and mobilizing the protests that took place prior to the fall of the regime. The dynamics of the movement have developed since then due to the successive events in the course of the Sudanese Revolution. With every stage of the complex political transitions and shifts in Sudan thereafter, RCs were playing major roles that effectively kept pace with the course of events, enabling them to play decisive roles such as massive marches amidst the disruption of communication and internet services after the General Command of the Army sit-in dispersal
