Emerging Challenges to Long-term Peace and Security in Mozambique

    Get PDF
Mozambique’s transition from civil war to peace is often considered among the most successful implementations of a peace agreement in the post-Cold War era. Following the signing of the 1992 Rome General Peace Accords (GPA), the country has not experienced any large-scale recurrence of war. Instead, Mozambique has made impressive progress in economic growth, poverty reduction, improved security, regional cooperation and post-war democratisation. Mozambique has also made significant strides in the provision of primary healthcare, and steady progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Notwithstanding these stellar achievements, Mozambique still faces a large number of political, social and economic problems: poverty, unemployment, natural resource boom, increasing political exclusion and growing political tensions between Renamo and the Frelimo government, dependence on foreign aid, and low access to social and economic services and facilities. This paper unpacks these challenges and the implications for Mozambique’s long-term peace and security

High intensity versus resistance exercise on postprandial triglycerides in healthy college students

Elevated postprandial triglycerides contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Prior exercise is a well-established method to lower postprandial triglycerides; however, most exercise protocols involve prolonged aerobic exercise of sixty to ninety minutes which is not attainable by the general population. PURPOSE: The present study investigates the effect of high intensity interval training (HIIT) of twenty minutes and resistance training of thirty minutes on postprandial triglycerides. METHODS: Approval for this study was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the University and signed informed consents were provided by all participants. Thirty healthy college-age students (5 males, 25 females) were recruited from nutrition and exercise science courses. All subjects completed the control, HIIT, and resistance protocols one week apart. Subjects performed the exercise protocols 12-16 hours prior to an oral fat tolerance test (milkshake, 1 g of fat per kg of body weight). Each exercise session was supervised; high intensity interval training consisted of four 30 second sprints with 4 minutes of walking recovery and the low-volume resistance training consisted of six machine-based lifts, 2 sets of 8 repetitions at 75% of one repetition maximum. Postprandial triglycerides were measured at baseline and three hours following consumption of the milkshake using the CardioChek PA blood analyzer. Data was analyzed using a three way repeated measures ANOVA statistical test. RESULTS: The means are as follows for each treatment and time point (baseline, and postprandial respectively): Control 107 +/- 49, 140 +/- 73 mg/dL; HIIT 93 +/- 34, 122 +/- 59 mg/dL; and Resistance 108 +/- 47, 144 +/- 64 mg/dL. A significant effect of treatment was noted indicating that HIIT TG values were lower than control (p=0.027); however, the treatment and time interaction was not significant (p=0.699). CONCLUSION: Twenty minutes of HIIT provided a sufficient energy deficit to significantly lower fasting and postprandial triglyceride values in a healthy, college-age population. Thirty minutes of low volume resistance training did not alter fasting or postprandial triglycerides in comparison to control values

Magnetic Position Sensor: Modeling a DC Electric Motor’s Magnetic Interference

    Get PDF
Measuring where an object is located is an invaluable tool across many disciplines. An emerging technology utilizes the magnetic field readings of a known source to locate where the object is in space. This type of sensor is useful since the target object can be measuring without contact, such as measuring the position of a piston through a cylinder wall. However, many problems arise since magnetic fields combine and distort when multiple fields are present. The magnetic disturbance has not been characterized for magnetic sensors in close proximity to DC electric motors. By modeling the known magnetic field source and gathering data of the distorted signal, a model of the DC motor field can be developed and later filtered out of the raw signal. In this thesis, a model for the magnetic field of a dipole magnet combined with that of a DC motor is explored in order to filter out the magnetic disturbances and regain the dipole field necessary for accurate position measurements. A characteristic DC magnetic field offset along with oscillations of the measured field has been shown to be attributed to the DC electric motor’s influence and has been modeled

Phone Use and Attention: A Multitasking Study

This study investigated the relationship between texting and attention. Specifically, the ability to comprehend visual cues as well as verbal cues. This was measured through a set of questions based on three video clips the participants were asked to watch and then answer comprehension questions at the end of each video. This study utilized both a control group and an experimental group. Participants in the experimental group were asked to have a texting conversation with the researcher while also watching the videos and those in the control group were just asked to watch the videos. Both groups were asked to answer the same set of questions at the same designated time during the experiment. Participants included undergraduate students (n=20) from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. Findings include significant results between texting and visual comprehension, texting and audio comprehension, and texting and total comprehension

LEARNING AND SEX: A Report on the Analysis of Single Sex Sections of First Year Seminars at CSB/SJU, 2014-15

Considering that as recently as 2014, school girls Chibok, Nigeria were abducted by Boko Haram, a Muslim fundamentalist terrorist group, one has to wonder about the correlation between the access to education, equality, safety, and opportunity. The College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University are private Catholic liberal arts institutions whose students enroll in single-sex institutions, but are provided co-educational learning experiences in the classroom. This hybrid structure permits the exploration multiple aspects of a gendered education. Given the opportunity this structure offers, the researchers of this project aim to study the First Year Seminar (FYS) experiences of student enrolled in single-sex FYS section in the 2014-15 academic year. By reviewing direct (essays) and indirect (focus group discussions) sources for assessment from sex-segregated FYS classes this project attempts to develop a better understanding of the influence of the learner’s sex in their learning experience

What We Share: Storytelling in Psychology and Theater

    No full text
Our presentation will examine the intersection of Psychology and Theater in the act of storytelling. This shared exploration is a result of our collaboration on the Theater Department\u27s fall production of the musical Next To Normal. Next To Normal details the struggles of a family dealing with the loss of a son and brother, and how that loss is experienced by the remaining family members. The staging of this story will give us an opportunity to gain new perspectives into mental health and to try and change the narrative around mental illness. We are specifically hoping to address mental illness challenges on our own campus and the production will be accompanied by workshops, post show discussions and student group led activities. As stories are powerful tools we use to create our sense of ourselves and the world, they have the ability to make real personal and social change. This forum will give us the chance to share how our departments embrace storytelling as the engine of that change
