    Future Mining in Minnesota: Effects on Communities and Environment Abstract This study explores and describes the potential risks of the proposed PolyMet copper-nickel mine near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. The goals of the research were: 1) identify vulnerable communities and environmental features, 2) determine the mine’s potential damage, and 3) create maps to illustrate the vicinity of the mine to vulnerable areas. The interest of this project is to determine whether the mine’s economic benefit outweighs the environmental risks. This research is an observational study that involves analysis of maps compiled with environmental, population, and vulnerability data as well as non-spatial data. The majority of data were found at MN Geospatial Commons. The major findings of this research are that the proposed mine has great potential to pollute the water table and nearby streams, rivers, and lakes. The mine’s risks may not have been fully reviewed since the potential pollution will have great impact on communities in St. Louis County, Minnesota, recreation in the BWCA, and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It can be assumed that the risks outweigh the benefits, since the mine has potential to pollute the mine for many years after it ceases operation. It can be interpreted that local communities and environmental features will take a toll if this mine is implemented

    The Impact of Music on Studying Ability in College Students

    This study investigates the relationship between listening to music and studying ability in college students. This study was conducted by utilizing a convenience sampling technique to have participants partake in the study. Each participant was randomly assigned to either a control or one of two experimental groups based on block-random assignment. The individuals in the first research group listened to a brief segment of a hit song while studying a list of uncommon words and definitions before being tested on their ability to recall this information. The individuals in the second research group listened to a brief segment of the instrumental version of the same hit song as the first research group while studying the same list of words and definitions before being tested. The individuals in the control group studied the same list of uncommon words and definitions without the music stimulus and were then tested on their ability to recall the information. The data for each participant was kept anonymous as it was analyzed. Each participant was a student at a small, midwestern university. The null hypothesis for this study is that there is no relationship between listening to either lyrical or instrumental music and studying ability. Following a statistical analysis, I fail to reject the null hypothesis as there was not a significant difference in the posttest scores for the participants in each group. Due to the convenience sampling technique utilized, the results cannot be generalized to a larger population. Further research needs to be performed to determine if there is a relationship between listening to both lyrical and instrumental music and effective studying ability in college students

    Interdisciplinary collaboration during student health fair volunteer experiences

    The purpose of our project was to identify student perceptions of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare professions before and after interdisciplinary community health fair experiences. Three community health fairs, sponsored by local aging services and health promotion organizations, provided an opportunity to introduce pre-healthcare students to interdisciplinary collaboration. We talk about the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for students studying pre-healthcare fields, present the results of our study, and provide insight into how we might improve interdisciplinary student experiences

    Cover crops: a sustainable practice in a corn-wheat cropping system

    In South Central Nebraska, cover crops grown after winter wheat harvest help prevent soil erosion, run-off and nitrate leaching. They are an important step toward more sustainable corn production in the Midwest. However, farmers are hesitant to grow cover crops because they use considerable amounts of soil water, tie up nitrogen, and offer habitat for crop pests, all of which may reduce the performance of subsequent corn crops. We wanted to investigate the effects of grass cover crops on the growth, development and yields of the following rain-fed corn crop. Cover crops (cereal rye, oats, and a mix of rye and oats) were planted following winter wheat on non-irrigated no-till plots at the University of Nebraska South Central Ag Laboratory (SCAL) near Clay Center in late summer 2017. Corn plant density, height, stalk diameter, and developmental stage were measured weekly from June through July 2018, and were compared to a control (corn grown without a previous cover crop). This research is important for farmers in rain-fed winter wheat and corn systems that are considering adding cover crops into their rotation. Farmers adopting more sustainable cropping systems, such as adding cover crops to a wheat-corn rotation, is essential to protecting the surrounding human and natural environments

    ASIANetwork Faculty Enhancement Program: providing a gateway to collaborations in China and India

    The goal of this Thursday Forum presentation is to discuss the outcomes of the summer 2018 ASIANetwork Faculty Enhancement Program (ANFEP). Funded by the Mellon Foundation through the ASIANetwork organization, the 2018 seminar was devoted to the topic of “Religion in National and International Affairs in China and India.” The seminar is part of the ASIANetwork Faculty Enhancement Program (ANFEP), which seeks to deepen Asian Studies in the Liberal Arts. The seminar itinerary included travel to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and other colleges in Shenzen and Guangzhou, China; Kolkata, India and northeast India, including Darjeeling and Sikkim. ASIANetwork encourages the study of Asian countries and cultures and enables students and faculty to experience these cultures first hand. This presentation is a “gateway” for those interested in expanding their knowledge about this region. Potential collaborators within the region represented multiple disciplines in addition to Religion, including Information Technology, Agriculture, Social Justice and Anthropology, to name a few. The 2018 ANFEP participants, sought to create new research and to facilitate conversations among faculty and administrators within these and other disciplines This session is highly interactive with discussion about the potential to collaborate with other professors and universities located in China and India for joint teaching and research opportunities. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how the outcomes of the ANFEP Program may be applicable to CSB/SJU

    Background Consumption of provitamin A carotenoid biofortified crops, such as maize, supports vitamin A (VA) status in animals and humans. Laying hens that consume β-cryptoxanthin–biofortified maize deposit β-cryptoxanthin into egg yolk. Objective We investigated whether β-cryptoxanthin–biofortified egg consumption would affect VA status of male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) compared with white-yolked eggs. Methods β-Cryptoxanthin–biofortified egg yolk, produced in hens fed biofortified orange maize or tangerine-fortified maize feeds, was freeze-dried and fed to gerbils. White-yolked eggs were produced by feeding white maize to hens. Gerbils (n = 57) were fed VA-deficient feed for 28 d. After baseline (n = 7), treatments (n = 10/group) included oil control (VA−); 16.7% orange maize–biofortified, tangerine-fortified, or white-yolk egg feeds; or retinyl acetate as positive control (VA+) matched to daily preformed retinol intake from the eggs for 30 d. Preformed retinol did not differ between the egg yolks. Gerbil liver retinol, lipid, fatty acids, and cholesterol were determined. Results Liver retinol concentration (0.13 ± 0.03 µmol/g) and total hepatic VA (0.52 ± 0.12 µmol) were higher in gerbils fed orange maize–biofortified eggs than in all other groups. The VA− group was severely VA deficient (0.018 ±0.010 µmol/g; P \u3c 0.05). Liver retinol was similar among VA+, tangerine-egg–, and white-egg–fed gerbils, but retinol reserves were higher in tangerine-egg–fed gerbils (0.35 ± 0.11 μmol) than in VA+ or VA− gerbils or at baseline (P \u3c 0.05). Liver fat was 3.6 times (P \u3c 0.0001) and cholesterol was 2.1 times (P \u3c 0.004) higher in egg-fed groups that experienced hepatosteatosis. Liver fatty acid profiles reflected feed, but retinyl ester fatty acids did not. Conclusions The preformed retinol in the eggs enhanced gerbil VA status, and the β-cryptoxanthin–biofortified eggs from hens fed orange maize prevented deficiency. Biofortified maize can enhance VA status when consumed directly or through products from livestock fed orange maize
