Heart Rate Variability: The Effects of Self-Compassion

    Get PDF
Psychologists are interested in self-compassion and its effects on our biopsychological well-being. A common method found throughout much research in assessing this is through heart rate variability. In the present study, we attempt to see whether or not self-compassion has an impact on one’s heart rate variability as a higher HRV indicates one is better able to adapt to stress. Self-compassion was measured through a self-compassion survey and we hypothesized that heart rate variability would then be prone to change across three 5-minute test intervals. We unfortunately found no significant change in HRV predicted by our hypothesis. Given the results of previous research in this area and our lack of a larger number of participants however, there is still reason to be looking into the effects of self-compassion on heart rate variability

Still having repercussions today, the 15th century “Doctrine of Discovery” gave Christian explorers and governments the moral and legal authority to invade, enslave and dominate Indigenous Peoples, underpinning cultural biases and disadvantages even into the 21st century. Learn about the Doctrine in this presentation by Peggy Landwehr Roske to community members attending an event sponsored by the Social Justice & Ministry Committee at the St. John the Baptist Parish Center, Collegeville, on March 7, 2018. [NOTE: The Catholic Church officially repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery on March 30, 2023, declaring that it is not part of the Catholic Church\u27s teachings and does not reflect the equal dignity and rights of Indigenous peoples.

Beyond Guadalupe: The Eucharist, the Cult of Saints and Local Religion in Eighteenth-Century Mexico City

    No full text
This article charts new ground within the historiography on colonial Mexican piety by arguing that the Virgin of Guadalupe did not dominate devotions in Mexico City even in the late colonial period. Rather, the single most important focus for pious attention was the Eucharist. Even in terms of Marian devotions, Our Lady of Sorrows figured as importantly as Guadalupe. Universal devotions like the Eucharist and Our Lady of Sorrows have received scant attention in scholarly literature on colonial Mexican piety, which has been guided by the concept of local religion, an analytical lens that largely overlooks the universal Church and its liturgy. This article calls upon scholars to attend more closely to the Mass and liturgy

The legacy of the Emperor Akihito at the twilight of his reign

    No full text
The Heisei Emperor (Akihito) has announced his retirement date in just over a year from now, April 30, 2019, the first abdication of a modern emperor, which in turn has triggered a series of debates and renewed discussions about the emperor\u27s role in contemporary Japan. This presentation begins with an introduction to the emperor system in Japan during the modern era (from the Meiji Restoration of 1868), and delves into contemporary debates surrounding the nature of the Japanese emperor. Examining the legacy of the Emperor Akihito begs comparison with his father, Emperor Hirohito, whose legacy too is being examined in Japan at the end of his son\u27s reign. Part of my comparison will look at each emperor\u27s place in history in relation to nuclear disaster
