    Magnetohydrodynamic Salt Water Drive

    Get PDF
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is the behavior of conducting fluids in electric and magnetic fields. Plasmas, liquid metals, and water are all examples of a conducting fluid with magnetic properties. Much of MHD is fluid-flow and the effects of electromagnetic fields on them, but propulsion is also a possibility. A magnetohydrodynamic salt water propulsion system was constructed to observe the effects of salinity on resistivity, and then on the overall efficiency of the drive. Salinity of water and corresponding resistivity was altered to optimize fluid velocity. The apparatus used was a rectangular tube with permanent magnets perpendicular to aluminum electrodes. The fluid acts as a conductor for the Lorentz force, effectively creating an underwater drive without moving parts. In a static no-flow setup, a pressure differential on the order of 10 Pascals was measured. In steady-state free flow, fluid flow of approximately 1 meter per second was observed

Infected Kin: Orphan Care and AIDS in Lesotho

    No full text
AIDS has devastated communities across southern Africa. In Lesotho, where a quarter of adults are infected, the wide-ranging implications of the disease have been felt in every family, disrupting key aspects of social life. In Infected Kin, Ellen Block and Will McGrath argue that AIDS is fundamentally a kinship disease, examining the ways it transcends infected individuals and seeps into kin relations and networks of care. While much AIDS scholarship has turned away from the difficult daily realities of those affected by the disease, Infected Kin uses both ethnographic scholarship and creative nonfiction to bring to life the joys and struggles of the Basotho people at the heart of the AIDS pandemic. The result is a book accessible to wide readership, yet built upon scholarship and theoretical contributions that ensure Infected Kin will remain relevant to anyone interested in anthropology, kinship, global health, and care.https://digitalcommons.csbsju.edu/sociology_books/1011/thumbnail.jp

    Climate for change

    No full text
The science is essentially settled. The actions we need to take are clear. Our climate is changing in ways that will impact all our lives. Human activity is causing this planetary crisis. Why can’t we act if we know what we should do? The barriers to change seem largely political and religious. This forum is a prelude to a seminar (October 16) on climate change and religion by Dr. Daniel DiLeo, Director of Justice and Peace Studies, Creighton University. His talk is sponsored by the Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning. This talk, “Climate for Change”, is interactive and focuses on four topics: Climate Science (for lay people) - How did we get here and where we will end up if we stay the course? Climate Action - Why is it so hard? Tipping points - What might amplify our climate crisis? Addressing Climate Change: What can we do to minimize our climate crisis

The philosophy of Michael Polanyi: from the discoveries of science to the contemplation of God

    Get PDF
Human uniqueness revolves around our knowing. All knowing is tacit (Michael Polanyi) and leads to indwelling of mind in reality, as of reality in mind. This is why we always know more than we can tell, which corresponds with another old adage, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. This presentation will try to show that the vast spectrum of knowing is continuous, running from discoveries of the inanimate world, through biology and the humanities and arts, and even to the face of God

I am too poor to fear death. Indigenous Miners and the Defense of Natural Resources in the Andes

    No full text
Since 1545, the indigenous communities working to extract Bolivia’s natural resources have provided immense wealth to first the Spanish and now multinational mining corporations. Throughout its history as a nation, Bolivians have tried to take control of this resource wealth, but found mining to be a risky foundation on which to build national prosperity. Moreover, mines are simply dangerous places both for workers and the communities that live around them. Dr. McGrath traces several moments in the 20th century when indigenous communities and workers confronted international mining companies and the Bolivian state alike in order to try to control their livelihoods and protect their families and what these can teach us about social movements today. Understanding why these workers and neighbors fought to mine can help us think about the emergence of indigenous and environmentalist social movements throughout the Andes
