Strategies To Improve Comprehension in College Students: Focus on the Process or the Product?
The purpose of the study is to see whether process-vs. product-oriented instructions, or a combination of both, influence the degree to which readers engage in paraphrasing (restating text in your own words), comprehension monitoring (reflecting on one’s understanding), predicting, self-explaining the content of a text, or other processes (called “special cases”) during reading. The materials used for this experiment included a text entitles How the Piloses Evolved Skinny Noses, and a shortened version of the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (as a measure of prior knowledge). The Piloses text was taken from a children’s novel that uses text and picture to introduce the topic of natural selection and evolution. A significant result was found for special cases, such that the control and the product-only group generated more special cases than the process-only and the process-and-product groups. In addition, self-explanation scores for the control and the product-only group were lower than the process-only and the process-and-product groups. Finally, there were no differences related to comprehension monitoring and predictions. There were significant results for subcategories for Paraphrasing. Controlling for prior knowledge, the process-only and process-and-product groups engaged in more paraphrasing, and their paraphrase were more lexically similar, more complete and more accurate. Overall, our study emphasizes the importance of teaching students a process in order to effectively study rather than simply explaining the end goal
Deer Harvesting Total by Districk Since 1997
Since 1997, St. John\u27s Abbey Arboretum has collected data on deer harvested in each district, but that data has never been aggregated and mapped. With the help of John Geissler\u27s data that has been through the years, deer harvesting will be mapped by district, including age and sex information. By examining shapefiles of the districts and adding each yearly excel data by spatial joins, the deer population will be presented through graduated colors. Plant Genome Editing Using CRISPR/Cas9: Investigating the Role of TEN1 in the Maintenance and Protection of Telomeres in Arabidopsis thaliana
Telomeres are highly regulated complexes composed of tandemly-repeated DNA sequences and associated proteins that are located the ends of linear chromosomes. Telomeres are essential for the maintenance and protection of chromosomes due to telomere shortening over successive cell divisions. Short telomeres have previously been associated with age-related disease phenotypes in many models. Telomerase is an enzyme capable of maintaining telomere length, however, it is highly suppressed in somatic cells. The CST complex is a heterotrimeric protein complex (CTC1/STN1/TEN1) that is associated with telomeres and telomerase and is conserved across all eukaryotes. The role of the CTC1 and STN1 proteins in the maintenance and protection of telomeres are well understood, but the role of TEN1 has yet to be fully characterized. This study describes the creation of a CRISPR/Cas9 construct to generate a TEN1 knockout in the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Future research will reveal the role of the TEN1 protein at telomeres
Energizing Education in Minnesota: Proximity of Conventional and Renewable Facilities to Universities
Minnesota has taken significant initiative tackling the global energy crisis while addressing energy security, education, availability, and prices within communities across the state. With no coal, oil, or natural gas reserves, the state was free from fossil fuel dependence and able to quickly begin its renewable energy economy. I am interested in identifying locations of major fossil fuel and renewable energy powered plants across Minnesota and understand the locality of each source to a higher education campus. From this, I plan to examine higher education institutions highly dedicated to advancing the research, implementation, and project development of renewable energy resources across the state, while identifying colleges and universities with little to no energy resources or education. Education is essential to further current and future projects by providing information, knowledge, and awareness to this regional and global issue of the energy transition, thus Minnesota’s energy education in higher education demands to be examined.
In order to display this data, I used the national site, U.S. Energy Information Administration, to collect data of the locations, energy output, and type of major power plants within the state. Furthermore, I am using data across the internet to pinpoint the location of every higher education institution within the state

The Effects of Multitasking on Motor Performance
This study investigated whether multitasking would have an effect on motor performance. Specifically, I observed undergraduate students from a midwestern liberal arts college—College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. In past research, Schwebel, McClure, & Porter (2017) had observed various college students about distracted pedestrian behavior on their college campus. Their results found changes in self-reports about their intentions, but not a specific behavior change. The undergraduates that participated in this study (N = 20) were assigned to two conditions by block randomization. Then they were given the task to walk down and back up a flight of stairs in the Henrita Academic Building at the College of Saint Benedict. Participants were measured in seconds with a stopwatch on how long it took them to walk down and then up a flight of stairs. Participants in the control condition were asked to walk down and then up the stairs at a normal pace, not skipping any steps, with no distractions. Participants in the experimental condition were asked to respond to various text messages that were sent to them while walking down and up the stairs. A t-test of independent means was calculated to analyze the data of this experiment. The results showed a statistically significant mean difference between the two conditions p = .000, d = 4.1. This suggests that multitasking while performing a motor task, demonstrates some impact on how long it takes for an individual to successfully complete the task
Kichwa substrate in Ecuadorean Spanish
The lexical influence of Kichwa in Ecuadorean Spanish is obvious but not extensive according to Willem Adelaar, but there is some evidence provided in the existing colloquial expressions and words in the Imbabura region for example (Bolanos-Fabres 2015) that indicate that the reach of this indigenous language is more extensive than anticipated. A Fulbright grant facilitated this inquiry and the oral samples collected over the course of two years in Ecuador are summarized in this presentation
Extreme non-viable candidates and quota maneuvering in Brazilian legislative elections
This article explores the causes and consequences of extreme non-viable candidacies, also known as “laranja” (orange) candidacies in the Brazilian political lore. We first define and delineate what makes a candidate a laranja, engaging the comparative literature on sacrificial lambs and using district-level electoral results to operationalize the concept. We then advance a typology of laranjas with four ideal types that vary along dimensions of legality and intentionality. Next, we apply descriptive statistics and a hierarchical logistic regression model to explore the individual, party, and district-level characteristics of extreme non-viable candidates and assess whether and how laranjas are distinct from non-laranjas. Finally, we illustrate the gendered character of laranjas, documenting how the candidate gender quota law in Brazil has been associated with a proliferation of candidatas laranjas (women extreme non-viable candidates)
