Different Stories, Different Genres, Different Gods

    No full text
We typically talk of “God” as though the Bible speaks of one — and only one — deity. However, a close reading of various biblical texts reveals that instead of a singular character called “God,” we find several different characters who go by that appellation. Those respective characteristics are at times so incompatible as to depict separate gods, each with a unique character in its own righ

Religious Bodies Crime Control Strategies in Lagos Slums, Nigeria

In Lagos\u27 slum areas, where crime and social instability are rampant, religious bodies are uniquely positioned to influence positive change. This study adopted a qualitative, cross-sectional approach, guided by social disorganisation and stakeholder theories, to examine their impact. Purposive sampling was used to select 61 participants for in-depth interviews and key informant interviews. Findings indicate that religious bodies primarily engage youth through sermons and occasional events but lack structured crime control mechanisms. Key challenges include community resistance, limited police collaboration, resource constraints, and threats from violent youth. Furthermore, doctrinal concerns and fear of backlash hinder interfaith collaboration, with some leaders prioritising internal cohesion over external partnerships. The study recommends formal partnerships with the Nigerian police, proactive crime control strategies, structured evaluation mechanisms, efficient resource mobilisation, and enhanced interfaith cooperation to foster a more coordinated approach

Increasing annual rainfall as recorded at five weather stations in the Cedar River watershed and adjacent, Eastern Iowa

Monthly and annual rainfall totals were examined from five weather stations in and near the Cedar River watershed in eastern Iowa. The basin has headwaters in southern Minnesota and trends northwest to southeast across the eastern part of the state. Graphical presentation highlights noisy signals within these, with annual values showing increase of about 4 to 7 inches over the most recent 100 years. This information is presented without reference to correlation with broader climate signals to inform residents and policy makers of the increasing trend. Monthly totals show consistent increase April and June, with lesser increases in May, July, August and October. Cold months November through March contribute little to the increase, and September shows a slight to moderate decrease. In general, monthly series showed more noise beginning in the early 1950s. No direct connection to broader climate drivers is implied

Benedict\u27s Gospel Vision: Chapters 36 and 53 of The Rule of St Benedict

This is a comparison exegesis of the Rule of Benedict’s Chapters 36 and 53 with Chapters 69-70 and 79 in the Rule of the Master. Chapters 36, “The Sick Brothers,” and 53, “The Reception of Guests,” demonstrate how the central themes of caritas, service, and hospitality are present in the RB, as the sick person and the guest are to be treated and received as if they are Christ. The kindness and compassion with which the vulnerable person is to be tended exemplifies Benedict’s vision of the Gospel as seen throughout his rule and greatly contrasts with the Rule of the Master
