The Skin I\u27m In: An Exploration of the Multi-Ethnic Experience
This presentation will explore the experiences of belonging to two or more ethnic backgrounds. We will discuss the intersectionality of identity based on self-perception and the perceptions of others; and discuss implications these perceptions have on those we work with and for. The Skin I\u27m In: An Exploration of the Multi-Ethnic Experience will be based on the presenter’s interactions with balancing intersecting identities. This presentation discusses racial and ethnic identities, as well as other intersectional identities individuals hold; will cover examples of oppression and privilege, why it\u27s important to be aware of perceptions and what people can do to be more proactive about their perceived assumptions; and talks about experiences of isolation and not belonging based on identities, which is done to help others understand how important inclusivity is
Toward a Holistic Networks Approach to Strategic Third-party Intervention: A Literature Review
How do third parties decide to intervene in civil conflicts? The study of intervention has focused primarily on the conflict characteristics and dyadic linkages that make intervention more likely, or the conflict outcomes that interventions generate, while holding all else equal. To paint a more complete picture of what goes into the intervention decision, I advocate a shift in the way we conceive of interventions toward network analysis, which grants due agency to the multiple external actors and internal combatants that influence the decision to intervene. This review critically examines and synthesizes the recent literature on third-party interventions in civil conflict and, in so doing, identifies some areas for future research

The Potential of Apple Peel Microorganisms to Break Down Fatty Acids
The objective of the study was to see how effective bacteria isolated from apple peels would be in breaking down fatty acids. Apple peel pieces were sampled twice onto Diluted Broth (DB) and Tributin agar plates in a series of dilutions. Bacteria selected from the DB diluted agar plates were replated onto Tributyrin agar plates in order to observe its cultivation from the composted apple peels and its ability to break down tributyrin. Antibiotic-resistant testing was also conducted in order to identify bacterial resistance and a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) so to identify the cultivated bacteria. This experiment was conducted twice over a span of 2 months resulting in inconclusive results. Due to additional nutrients in the Tributin agar plates, the bacteria did not exhibit any breakdown of the material but rather used it to grow. The tributin agar plates indicated differentiation in color, size, and shape for each selected bacteria
Analysis of Cross Complementation of Archaeal Bax1 Protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
DNA repair mechanisms are essential in maintaining cell life and ensuring efficient cell replication. In this experiment, we tested for cross complementation of archaeal DNA repair genes (obtained from Methanosarcina acetivorans) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells lacking Rad 1 and Rad 2 proteins. Five different cell conditions were tested: S. cerevisiae lacking rad 1 with a Bax 1 or a vector plasmid, S. cerevisiae lacking rad 2 with a Bax 1 or vector plasmid, and a wild type S. cerevisiae and no plasmid. Each week, cells were grown in broth culture, plated, and exposed to ultra-violent light, damaging the cell and inducing cellular DNA repair. After incubation, the plates were examined and cell counts were taken to determine percent survival after UV light exposure. Early results indicate that S. cerevisiae mutant strains carrying the Bax 1 gene can substitute for the Rad 1 protein but not the Rad 2 protein. We are currently conducting more trials of this experiment to increase confidence in our results and elaborate on current findings
