    The new CSB/SJU Honors Program

    Get PDF
The new CSB/SJU Honors Program is a four-year, five course interdisciplinary general education program aimed intentionally at academically high-achieving students who have wide-ranging intellectual interests and a desire to put their theoretical learning into practice. In this academically challenging program, students develop interdisciplinary agility, research skills, and leadership abilities. It is a selective program, admitting only 60 students per cohort through a competitive application process. Students will move through the Honors curriculum with their class cohort and earn credit toward general education requirements. We provide information about the redesigned Honors Program including an explanation of the rationale for the changes, an overview of the vision and academic courses, and an explanation of how to get involved and teach courses for it

Forty years on : Richard Bresnahan and artists of the Saint John\u27s Pottery

    No full text
Richard Bresnahan, his apprentices, and volunteers built the largest wood-fired kiln in North America at Saint John\u27s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The Johanna Kiln accommodates 12,000 works of pottery and sculpture and is fired in the autumn. The fire is stoked for ten days and then the kiln cools for two weeks before opening. The Saint John\u27s Pottery has embodied the Benedictine values of community, hospitality and self-sufficiency as well as the University\u27s commitment to the integration of art and life; the preservation of the environment; the linkage between work and worship; and the celebration of diverse cultures. Reading the Bible in the Age of Francis

    No full text
Pope Francis has taken the world by storm. He is the most prominent Christian voice in our world today. How does he incorporate Scripture into his ministry and what does Scripture say about those things he emphasizes? This book will explore within Scripture the bedrock themes of Francis\u27 time as Pope, such as the poor, women, a God of surprises, mercy, the environment, and excessive legalism. What we find is that a diversity of biblical perspectives provide deep theological support or precedent for Francis\u27 agenda. Both Francis and Scripture call Christians today to live in dramatically new ways in our world. -- Provided by publisher.https://digitalcommons.csbsju.edu/sot_books/1116/thumbnail.jp

    Social Esteem as Moral Recognition

    Get PDF
Some strands of feminist and social philosophy suggest that the basis for personhood is having an identity—where identity is not defined entirely in individualistic terms of reason and autonomy and is in fact quite relational. When personhood is conceived in these terms, morality becomes a matter of recognizing persons for who they are, which includes recognizing them as members of social groups. In this paper I explore the notion of esteem as a species of recognition for these layers of identity, claiming that esteem deserves to stand on equal footing with respect as a moral attitude
