Rome, Parthia, and the Politics of Peace: The Origins of War in the Ancient Middle East

    No full text
This volume offers an informed survey of the problematic relationship between the ancient empires of Rome and Parthia from c.96/95 BCE to 224 CE. Schlude explores the rhythms of this relationship and invites its readers to reconsider the past and our relationship with it. Some have looked to this confrontation to help explain the roots of the long-lived conflict between the West and Middle East. It is a reading symptomatic of most scholarship on the subject, which emphasizes fundamental incompatibility and bellicosity in Roman-Parthian relations. Rather than focusing on the relationship as a series of conflicts, Rome, Parthia, and the Politics of Peace responds to this common misconception by highlighting instead the more cooperative elements in the relationship and shows how a reconciliation of these two perspectives is possible. There was in fact a cyclical pattern in the Roman-Parthian interaction, where a reality of peace and collaboration became overshadowed by images of aggressive posturing projected by powerful Roman statesmen and emperors for a domestic population conditioned to expect conflict. The result was the eventual realization of these images by later Roman opportunists who, unsatisfied with imagined war, sought active conflict with Parthia. Rome, Parthia, and the Politics of Peace is a fascinating new study of these two superpowers that will be of interest not only students of Rome and the Near East, but also to anyone with an interest in diplomatic relations and conflict in the ancient world, and today. -- Provided by publisherhttps://digitalcommons.csbsju.edu/classics_books/1003/thumbnail.jp

Usage of Electronic Interactive Feedback Surveys to Increase Quality Maturity Score Among Public Health Agencies

    Get PDF
Effective involvement in the quality improvement process of an agency is essential. Employee lack of enthusiasm for quality improvement, coupled with limited access to resources for expressing concerns and new ideas, and lack of supervisor follow up produce an environment that inhibits quality improvement processes. This lack of quality improvement process stifles change within the agency. Increased quality improvement initiatives enhance the use of evidence-based processes and procedures and insure staff have input into organizational changes. A local public health agency identified quality improvement environment maturity levels as an area for growth. In response to their concern, a 14-question survey was given to 33 public health staff. The survey included questions regarding how staff feel the agency is doing with their quality improvement environment. Initial analysis of staff responses indicated lack of resources for staff to provide feedback and ideas for quality improvement initiatives. With this feedback in mind an electronic survey was created. In the future the agency will send the survey to the public health staff to promote easily accessible staff engagement in the quality improvement process. The increased engagement in the quality improvement process through the tool and follow-up from supervisors, will improve the quality maturity score, indicating a more positive quality improvement environment. Adequate usage of quality improvement projects within an agency has been shown to be extremely beneficial in the culture of the agency itself

    Unknown

“Unknown” explores inner emotions about death and the other side, artistically representing self-discovery and faith with “unknown” aspects of the afterlife as the theme. Death is a perplexing yet imminent part of our lives and experiences. This series calls to attention the idea that the unknown can be seen with a sense of fear or with a feeling of peace; the choice is up to us. There is also no black and white answer, only stages of middle gray. Not knowing what truly comes ahead, I am working on surrendering to the mystery and faith of it all

Kombucha’s Effect on the Composition of the Human Gut Microbiota, its Connection to Disease, and its Application to Treating an Enteric Strain of Salmonella.

Consumption of kombucha has been shown to promote human gut health and act as an antibacterial agent against enteric pathogens. This thesis investigates if kombucha consumption changes the composition of the human gut microbiota and aims to measure its inhibitory effects on the growth of an enteric pathogen, Salmonella typhimurium. We predicted consumption of kombucha will alter the composition of the gut microbiota and demonstrate antibacterial activity in the presence of S. typhimurium. Research suggested that alterations in the gut microbiota is associated with multiple chronic diseases. It is further noted that kombucha and other probiotics may be used to restore proper gut health. Based on the literature, we suggest that kombucha has an effect on gut health. To test its antibacterial activity, a Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion Assay was performed. Kombucha’s zone of inhibition for S. typhimurium was compared to two antibiotics (ampicillin, ciprofloxacin) on TSA agar. Both antibiotics displayed consistent inhibitory effects, however, kombucha did not inhibit S. typhimurium growth. While kombucha and other probiotics affect the composition of the gut microbiota, kombucha did not demonstrate antibacterial activity against S. typhimurium
