Wild minds: integrating nature into daily life

    No full text
Many people do not know the impacts that nature has on your body and mind. Going into nature relieves stress, depression, and anxiety. Entering wilderness, even for five minutes a day, has significant mental health impacts. Wild Minds is a wilderness program on campus that emphasizes mental health in relation to nature. This presentation consists of a description of the program, the seven meetings during spring semester (which include hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, art in nature, meditation, and bird watching, with others depending on weather) and the wilderness trip to the BWCA after school is over. During the presentation, I explain how improved mental health can be capitalized from interactions with nature

Book Review: Champions for peace: Women winners of the Nobel Peace Prize

    Get PDF
Judith Hicks Stiehm is a political science professor who has served on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Military and as a consultant to the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women and to the Lessons Learned Unit of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. In earlier publications she explored nonviolent resistance in America (1973); analyzed and challenged the traditional protector/protected male and female roles in war, arguing that the path to gender equality entailed equal responsibility for military protection (1982); then turned to an examination of women in the military (1996), and military education. In Champions for Peace, Stiehm’s focus shifts to an examination of 16 women who were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She declares her purpose on the dedication page: Historians too often praise reckless and arrogant leaders who send troops to wage war. This book is intended to encourage and to honor those who seek to avoid war without relinquishing the pursuit of justice

The Political Personality of 2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden

    Get PDF
This working paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of former U.S. vice president Joe Biden, Democratic nominee in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon. Psychodiagnostically relevant data about Biden were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5. The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Biden’s primary personality pattern was found to be Outgoing/gregarious, complemented by a secondary Accommodating/cooperative pattern and a subsidiary Ambitious/confident pattern. The prominence of the Outgoing pattern, in conjunction with a distinctive Accommodating pattern in Biden\u27s overall personality configuration, is indicative of the conciliatory extravert subtype. This personality composite provides the personological substrate for a strong affiliation motive. These individuals are driven to seek approval; they want others to like them and view them as a friend or ally. To achieve that motivational goal, they often compliment, praise, or flatter others, presenting an image of goodwill. When disagreements occur, they attempt to smooth things over, sometimes at the cost of conceding. Leaders with Biden’s personality profile are likely to exhibit an interpersonal leadership style, characterized by flexibility, compromise, and an emphasis on teamwork. The general tenor of a Biden presidency likely will be conciliatory, which could render a prospective President Biden vulnerable to manipulation by pressure groups and handicap him in negotiations or conflicts with foreign adversaries

Shia Islam and Politics : Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon

    No full text
This book argues that ever since Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979, which established a Shia Islamic government in Iran, that country’s religious and political leaders have used Shia Islam as a crucial way of expanding Iran’s objectives in the Middle East and beyond. Since 1979, Iran’s religious and political leaders have been concerned about Iran’s security in the face of the hostility and expansionism of the United States and other western countries, and the threats from powerful neighboring Sunni leaders and countries. While Iran’s government has attempted to align itself with Shia Muslims in various countries, such as Iraq and Lebanon, against American and Sunni expansionism, the Iranian government has attempted to religiously nourish and politically mobilize those Shias as a matter of principle, not only because of the Iranian government’s desires to protect Iran from external threats. The book analyzes Shia Islam and politics in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon which have among the largest proportional Shia populations in the Middle East and are vibrant centers of Shia intellectual life. The book\u27s clear and jargon-free approach make it especially accessible for students and general readers who would like an introduction to the book\u27s topics. Songs of Courage: Missionaries in Occupied China During World War II

    No full text
In April 1938, under Japanese bombers, hundreds of wounded Chinese soldiers sang army songs at Kaifeng railway station in Henan Province, China. This was the only way left for the soldiers to show their gratitude to the approximately seventy missionaries from the United States and Europe who were treating their wounded, burying their dead, and caring for their weak. From April to June 1938, these missionaries treated over 50,000 wounded Chinese soldiers. In the winter of 1941, with the onset of Pearl Harbor, these missionaries were deemed as enemy nationals by the Japanese army and put into concentration camps. Amidst aggression, destruction and death their songs became a voice of courage, compassion, and hope for the suffering. Among all the sounds of occupation, these international missionaries struck a unique tone that transcended the boundaries of personal welfare, political entanglements, and nation-states
