    Friction in Metal-Forming Processes: Design of a Slidometer to Measure Friction in Sheet-Metal Forming

    Sheet metal forming is a reliable, cost-effective method to forming metal into different parts. However, the outcome of this process is significantly influenced by many different factors including material properties, lubrication, and forming processes. Friction plays a crucial role in this process by influencing the overall part quality, tool life, and cost of production. An analysis of the effects of friction in sheet metal forming was performed, along with studies of current methods of measuring friction in sheet metal forming. Two conceptual slidometers were designed to measure friction using different methods, and both designs were analyzed. Continual studies will be performed to develop a better understanding of friction in metal forming processes

    Touch Crawler

    The aim of this project is to explore why the video game subgenre of roguelike dungeon crawlers differ in their control schemes between PC and mobile based games. This project will develop a roguelike game called Touch Crawler for the PC and mobile devices, in which it will offer a unique combination of genre and control scheme for the PC. Unlike most PC roguelike games, Touch Crawler will be mostly point and click as if it were a mobile game, while also being available for PC. Like most roguelikes, it will offer an experience of a scrolling shooter game where you fight your way through rooms, bosses and entire areas where the goal is to go as far as possible while winning the most points. Research such as this will be able to identify a possible new and innovative game design feature that may be used in roguelike Dungeon Crawlers in the future and answer the question as to why PC-Based roguelike Video Games do not use the same touch-based control schemes as their mobile counterparts

    A Formulation on Friction in Forging

    Metal forging is frequently used for the manufacturing and production of parts for many industries. While the process has improved with automated equipment, there are still many unknown factors about the causes of friction in forging dies during the process. Friction is important to account for because the quality of the forged parts depends upon the interaction of the metal and the tool during the forging process. This interaction is subject to the negative effects of friction when there is a lack of compatibility between materials, lubricants, and multiple other factors. In particular, the focus of this research will be to study how friction depends on different conditions in metal forming as an industrial process. An evaluation of the forging conditions’ impact on the coefficient of friction will allow recommendations to be made on how to further improve the forging process to effectively reduce friction and guide future experiments related to the occurrence of friction

    Self-Concept Among Adults with Permanent Stomas Secondary to Colorectal Cancer: A Literature Synthesis

    Colorectal cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer diagnosed in adults. Adults with colorectal cancer (AWCC) often receive surgical interventions, including the creation of a permanent stoma. According to recent data, more than 700,000 Americans live with a permanent stoma. As colorectal cancer survival rates continue to improve, psychosocial issues related to living with cancer and cancer-related treatment have become important issues for nurses to address. Little is known, however, about the psychosocial issues AWCC with permanent stomas experience, nor is it known what types of interventions nurses implement to help facilitate more positive outcomes among AWCC who have permanent stomas. Therefore, the purpose of this Honors College project was to perform a literature synthesis related to AWCC living with a permanent stoma. To address this purpose, a search of the literature was conducted using the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) database to locate original research published in the nursing/health-related literature; the search revealed 13 studies. The literature synthesis indicated that following surgical creation of a permanent stoma, AWCC often experience self-concept and body image disturbances, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depression, feelings of stigma, and social impairment. Nurses caring for AWCC awaiting or following creation of a permanent stoma need to be vigilant in assessing for the presence of psychosocial issues in order to recognize and manage the complex problems that the presence of a stoma can create

    The Impacts of Stand Your Ground Laws on Crime Rates

    This study examines the impact on crime rates that occur when Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws are implemented in a state that previously had a Castle Doctrine in place. Specifically, violent crime and homicide crime rates in states with SYG laws are analyzed using Regression with Difference Scores models. Currently there is limited research on how SYG affects crime rates at the state level and most of the research focuses on Florida, so this study expands the knowledge that currently exists to include other states that have implemented SYG. The Regression with Difference Scores models showed that, controlling for changes in the control variables, the shift from just Castle Doctrine to SYG did not have a statistically significant effect on either the changes in the violent crime rates or homicide rates between the time periods measured. These results open up additional questions and avenues of research that needs to be done in order to properly evaluate the effectiveness of SYG laws and to make an informed decision regarding how SYG should be addressed by lawmakers in the future
