    "O-M-G This Has Really Affected Us": The Pandemic Experiences of Early Childhood and Primary Grade Interventionists

    The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in wide disruptions to in-person schooling which have exacerbated conditions in the public-school system. While creating chaos in general, these disruptions have also affected the assessment of children and the delivery of instructional interventions, processes which are crucial to the implementation of Response to Intervention, in which children receive increased academic support at progressive tiers of intervention. The current study used a qualitative design aligned to the classic cultural-historical methods used by Vygotsky. Specifically, this study examined the experiences of Birth to 3-years-old and Kindergarten to Grade Three interventionists, who provided intervention to children during the pandemic. Nine participants, four Birth to 3-years-old interventionists and five Kindergarten to Grade Three interventionists, participated in a series of focus groups in which research questions were presented as tools for analysis. All sessions were audio and video recorded. The data were transcribed and analyzed using in-vivo codes, subcategories, dominant categories and themes.Five themes emerged from the data analysis. The first two themes related to alterations of service but remained distinct on the basis of whether the alteration was in relationship to a social need or of material necessity. The next two themes were primarily characterized by verbal responses that indicated emotions or feelings. The final theme was a distinct set of verbal responses about future orientation and characterized by concerns about educational practice and children’s experiences. The study’s findings capture how interventionists altered services for children during the pandemic, the experience of providing intervention during the pandemic and expectations about intervention in subsequent school years. The methodology developed for this study suggests the potential to align modern methods to classical cultural-historical methods. The data also reveal specific alterations that interventionists implemented, perspectives on their experience and concerns. These verbal responses serve as rich vignettes of the COVID-19 pandemic and have implications for District-level, and other public policy decisions. These findings underscore the importance of conducting studies within a methodological framework that emerges on a clear theoretical basis and may inform future research of Response toIntervention

    HEAR Device for Electrical Activity of The Heart: Computation Towards Cardiovascular Diseases Using Novel Comma-Z Classifier and GPU for Automotive

    The silent heart attack which is also known as silent myocardial infarction occurs in almost 45% of the heart attacks and strikes men more than women. Women have less tendency to get sudden heart attack or heart failure or arrhythmias due to the menstrual cycle hormone released by their bodies until certain age. However, studies also show that higher risk of cardiovascular events are found both in men and women. During the phase of myocardial infarction patients develop Ventricular Fibrillations or rapid Atrial Fibrillations which may lead to the risk of death in a short period of time. Covid-19 also induces arrhythmias and myocardial injury and acute coronary syndrome. The average time spent by a person behind the wheel is approximately 1 hour on an everyday basis for a 30 miles drive. The Driver and Vehicle agency promotes that a driver with heart arrhythmias require approval from medical professionals to drive and based on today’s estimation most of the drivers are likely to get into an emergency or accident or collision due to Cardiac Stress, Hypertension, Cardiomyopathy, or complications after Angioplasty. There is a tremendous increase worldwide for wearables devices ranging from 325 million in 2016 to 929 million by 2021 and now 1 in every 6 Americans are using a wearable device, automakers are trying methods that involve measuring heart data via seat sensors and steering wheel sensors. Finally, my contribution in this research comprises of inventing a circular earlobe device (HEAR) placed to the earlobe that sends enormous amount of heart related photoplethysmography (PPG) data to the in-vehicle GPU device and invented a method to observe, compute, analyze, predict, and study AF and VF arrhythmias along with NSR using novel COMMA-Z filter, Signal Differentiation and DFS filters while driving. Such a sensitive work requires thorough communication and discussion with medical professionals for correctness of final heart computed data so based on the various experiments and clinical trials conducted this research was extensively supported by well-known surgeons from Beaumont hospitals, Michigan. The HEAR device also helps in long term monitoring and study of AF and VF tachycardias and related heart conditions because it’s all about timing for heart conditions and diseases as these tachycardias may lead to occurrence of ischemic stroke and cardiac arrest and complete heart failure and other dangerous conditions

    Self-Crack Healing of Engineering Ceramics

    The purpose in its simplicity is to heal the damage in a sample composed of ceramic particles through the heat treatment or through applying another source to heal the damage might be through using a laser source at room temperature to reduce the cost of wasting efforts and materials. The system can be designed to include a sensor to sense the damage in the component and a healing agent like loose particles or a specific source that provides an immediate treatment through the heating in order to create or generate the glassy phase. Self-crack-healing materials are able to sense the crack and heal it. The notion of not giving up on things can be considered as the motive for such type of research. Most ceramics are brittle and hence they are sensitive to flaws and cracks. Ceramics are subjected to thermal and mechanical stresses during service. Residual stresses may eventually cause microcracks (internal and surface cracks) and the failure of the component in use. This limits their use as structural engineering materials, and thus applying or inducing a self-crack healing ability would be a solution to overcome this problem. Great benefits can be expected from the components in use while applying the self-healing ability, such as reducing maintenance, inspection, and the cost of machining and polishing as well, which enhances the reliability of the component in use, and hence achieving a higher structural integrity*. Developing new materials with increasing resistance to wear and corrosion is the goal for many researchers and manufacturers as well. Consequently, an attempt to imitate the mechanisms employed by nature through the biological systems have been made to design self-healing materials and coatings for corrosion protection which can result in complete recovery*. Ceramics can be used in many applications including aeroengine turbine blades, gas turbine blades, high performance bearings and many other applications that require high temperature service *. However, these ceramics have low fracture toughness, which means that they are brittle and sensitive to flaws such as micro and macro cracks, which limit their applications as structural components. The present research is focused on the self-crack healing ability of Spinel nanocomposites and SiC bonded Kaolinite. The self-crack healing behavior was investigated as a function of the healing conditions (time, temperature, and chemical composition) as well as the mechanism responsible for healing the cracks

    Differences in Recent Special Purpose Acquisition Companies from Previous Years

    This thesis project will analyze Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs), focusing on their increased popularity in 2020 and 2021. The potential differences between SPACs of recent years versus SPACs of previous years will be identified and inspected, along with the causes for any changes in their structure. Existing research on related topics will be taken into consideration. Specifically, a comparison will be drawn between current papers related to SPACs and prior ones. The results of this research will help in understanding why there was an increased use of Special Purpose Acquisition Companies as a means for private companies to go public in 2020 and 2021. These findings may also provide insights on predicting future trends in the SPAC market. Personally, this research project will allow me to further explore a topic that I am interested in within my Finance major

    Examining effects of site level and landscape scale factors on butterfly communities in greenspaces across a rural-urban gradient

    Insect communities around the world are facing threats from increasing human land-use, including urbanization and agricultural intensification. Habitat degradation has greatly impacted invertebrate pollinators, and butterfly species are no exception. Butterflies are especially sensitive to environmental change, most notably in the larval stage, and often serve as indicator species of ecosystems as a result. In order to help conserve butterfly communities in urban environments, this study aimed to examine how anthropogenic land-use affects butterfly abundance and diversity as well as their interactions with floral resources. To accomplish this, I surveyed butterflies and floral resources at twelve sites (six parks and six farms) in the metro-Detroit area. Then, I examined how several environmental attributes at the local and landscape scale influenced butterfly assemblages at these sites. Park sites supported higher butterfly diversity than farm sites. In addition, butterfly richness increased with greater urbanization, which may be explained by a higher concentration of floral resources within a generally more inhospitable urban matrix. Larger sites supported more larval specialists, whereas a greater amount of edge habitat was associated with more larval generalists. Finally, high native plant species richness positively influenced butterfly diversity. These findings indicate that butterfly conservation efforts in urban areas should focus on enlarging green spaces and supporting high-quality habitat edge with diverse native plant resources as well as increasing the abundance of plant resources that support larval specialist species
