    Process Optimization of Autoclave Bonded Light-Weight Material Joints

    This dissertation research fills a gap in the existing open literature regarding the significance of autoclave cure process variables and their interactions on the static strength of lightweight material single lap joints under tensile-shear loading. Specifically, the research investigates the dependence between the degree of cure of the epoxy adhesive and the mechanical performance of the single lap joint boded with same epoxy adhesive. Lightweight material system includes polycarbonate, Aluminum 6061 and glass reinforced plastics (GFRP) extren 500. A commercially available polyurethane film adhesive PE399 was selected to bond Polycarbonate single lap joints (SLJ) while epoxy film adhesive AF163-2K was selected to bond aluminum and GFRP joints. Studied variables include cure temperature, cure pressure and their respective rates as well as the duration of cure time. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is used to quantify glass transition temperature of AF163-2K cured with different combinations of autoclave process variables. The relative significance of variables and variable combinations are investigated for their effect on the bond strength. Experimental test data shows interaction between autoclave variable cure temperature in combination with cure time, temp ramp rate and pressure ramp rate have significant effect on glass transition temperature, bond strength and failure mode. Changes in joint static load transfer capacity (LTC) was investigated after cyclic temperature profile fluctuates between 20 C and 85 C at a constant relative humidity (RH) level of 85

    The Effect of Antihypertensive Therapy on Medication Adherence and Blood Pressure Control – A Quality Improvement Project

    Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to compare fixed dose medication combination (FDCT) and mixed dose medication combination antihypertensive therapy (MDCT) on medication adherence and blood pressure (BP) in a small sample of patients with hypertension in a rural clinic in West Tennessee. Method: Sixty study participants were recruited from a rural internal medicine practice in Brownsville, Tennessee. Thirty participants were taking FDCT and thirty participants were taking MDCT. Medication adherence and BP were measured to determine the relationships between type of antihypertensive therapy (FDCT compared to MDCT) and the outcome variables. Analysis: Chi-square analyses, Analyses of variance (ANOVA), Two-tailed, independent samples t-tests were used to evaluate differences between scores on the Morisky Adherence Scale – 8 and BP. A Pearson product-moment correlation was conducted to determine the relationship between adherence and blood pressure. All analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 26 (Armonk, NY). The a priori alpha level of 0.05 was used to test for significance. Results: There were no statistical difference between the two groups in medication adherence scores or BP based on antihypertensive therapy. Age was the only demographic variable found to have a significant correlation with BP. The effect of a relatively small sample size and other factors not studied may have affected the overall results. Conclusion: This study did not find that medication adherence differed by type of antihypertensive regimen prescribed among the study participants

    Designing an Algorithm to Allocate Charitable Food Donations to Food Banks and Soup Kitchens

    The coronavirus pandemic has led to a drastic rise in food shortages and subsequent food insecurity, which is burdening food banks and soup kitchens. These charitable organizations now have more people relying on them, and are having a harder time obtaining the food they need. Previous research surrounding the subject has included algorithmic solutions, but each of the resulting algorithms fails to take all of the important considerations into calculation. This paper puts forth an algorithm that centralizes the process of food donation allocation and prioritizes the specific donation requests of food banks and soup kitchens. Interviews were conducted with nonprofit organizations belonging to the charitable food system in order to understand the process of food donation from the perspective of these nonprofits, and the findings were used to inform the algorithm’s decision-making process. The algorithm was first designed in pseudocode, and the pseudocode was then translated into JavaScript for use on a website that provides an interface for donors to submit donations and nonprofit organizations to submit requests. The website uses the algorithm to facilitate the matching of donations to nonprofit organizations. This algorithm unifies the food donation allocation process for a community, maximizes the amount of food donations that are utilized, and assists food banks and soup kitchens in acquiring the donations they need

    Statistical Learning of Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensor Data for Human Monitoring Applications

    Elderly individuals, especially those who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases, are prone to cognitive impairment and deteriorating motor stability. Moreover, with the emerging field of the internet of things (IoT), security of the data shared throughout these connected devices is a growing challenge, leading to the advancement of the field of biometrics. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors are commonly deployed in related monitoring and security applications as they are cheap, non-contact, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components that have proven to be relatively accurate. PIR sensors function by detecting human presence through a change in infrared radiation across the field of the view (FoV) of the sensor. As a result, the major known drawback with PIR sensors is their inability to reliably detect stationary human occupants. Towards expanding the applications and accuracy of PIR sensors, two methods for detecting stationary human subjects are developed and presented: a motion induced PIR sensor (MI-PIR) and a chest motion PIR sensor (CM-PIR). MI-PIR artificially induces the motion necessary for accurate human detection via a robotic actuator, while CM-PIR relies on the movement of the human chest for accurate detection of stationary subjects. The efficacy of these human presence classifications using a single PIR sensor, as well as related human monitoring classifications and regressions, is dependent on statistical learning algorithms for differentiation of scenarios that exist between the numerous applications. A recurrent neural network (RNN) deep learning model with long short-term memory (LSTM) units is found to be superior for PIR sensor data classification due to the time-series nature of the data, and a Gaussian process regression (GPR) machine learning model is utilized as a regression approach for precise indoor localization. The results of this work show that MI-PIR and CM-PIR are both accurate systems for stationary human presence detection and related human monitoring applications using a single PIR sensor

    Organizational Commitment of Student Employees: A Study of Oakland University Undergraduate Admissions Employees

    The purpose of this research is to study how the components of organizational commitment vary for a sample of college students working on-campus jobs. Nineteen student employees, 15 current and 4 previous, from Oakland University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions comprised the sample for a survey to assess their organizational commitment. The results of the survey demonstrated that student employees respond to the same factors that employees in longer-term careers do. The sample of student employees responded most strongly to questions asking about affective commitment, demonstrating that factors of affective commitment are very important to student employees. The study confirmed that the established measure of organizational commitment is relevant for and applicable to college students working in alternative employment situations
