    Emerging changes in scholarly publishing will have a profound effect on both academic libraries and their patrons. As part of an environmental scan at an R2 institution, an online survey of tenure-track faculty was conducted to understand their use of open access (OA) and their experience with funding open access publication. The session presents results from the survey and engages attendees in discussion about OA funding at their institutions

    Religious Value Transmission: An Exploration of the Internalization of Catholic Values in Adolescence, Young Adulthood, and Parenthood

    Despite increasingly secular pressures, more Catholics continue to practice the faith in which they were brought up, as compared to members of other Christian denominations. It is of interest to understand what factors contribute to the maintenance of childhood beliefs into adulthood and into one’s own childrearing practices, thereby passing those beliefs to the next generation. This dissertation explored religious value transmission through the lens of internalization across three notable life stages in Catholic individuals: young adolescence (Study One), young adulthood (Study Two), and parenthood (Study Three). Across these three stages, the pattern was mostly consistent: parental influence was positively associated with religiosity, and this relationship was generally mediated by identified, but not introjected, internalization. Study One found that adolescents' perceptions of their parents' religiosity were associated with both introjected and identified internalization. Study Two showed that, while current factors (e.g., peer experience and school affiliation) changed the ways in which parental influence was associated with internalization and religiosity, they did not entirely replace parental influence. Study Three showed that people tend to raise their children similarly to how they were raised with regards to religion, thereby continuing the cycle of religious value transmission. Apart from two notable deviations (wherein introjection was also a significant mediator), identified, but not introjected, internalization was associated with the religious outcomes throughout the three life stages, highlighting the importance of this fuller form of internalization in religiosity and the continuation of the value transmission cycl

    Using Salt Gradient Energy and Thermal Energy to Enhance Reverse Osmosis Desalination

    Improving desalination energy efficiency is crucial for meeting rising global water demands. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a common desalination process that uses an applied pressure to overcome the natural osmotic potential of seawater to drive nearly pure water permeate through a semipermeable membrane. However, it has high specific energy consumption ranging from 4-5 kWh/m3 and environmental issues associated with discharging the highly concentrated brine that is left over after separation. This work investigates two methods of improving the energy efficiency of RO desalination: (1) Recovering salt gradient energy from desalination brine, and (2) Using thermal energy to pre-heat RO feed water and reduce mechanical pump work

    Machine learning, a subset of AI, has made a significant impact on the medical field by improving the speed and accuracy of test results. Among the many discrete ML tools, k-means is a type of data clustering that uses unsupervised ML to divide unclassified data into different groups with similar variances. This dissertation applied the k-means clustering algorithm to analyze synovial fluid compositions of healthy people and osteoarthritis (OA) patients, focusing on four components: hyaluronic acid (HA), chondroitin sulfate (C6S, C4S), and the C6S ratio. The main objective was to identify distinct patterns and clusters within these datasets based on age and gender. Data was extracted from two previously published research studies. The first dataset comprised 187 healthy participants, with ages ranging from 10 to 90 years. The second dataset consisted of 133 OA participants with ages ranging from 55 to 90 years. Applying ML algorithms, specifically k-means clustering, the MATLAB program was used for data analysis. The findings showed the k-means clustering successfully highlighted age- and gender-related synovial fluid concentration patterns. In addition, for both healthy and OA groups, younger people had higher levels of synovial fluid components, which decreased with age. In healthy people, HA levels were high among younger people but decreased with age. In the OA group, HA levels increased in older patients. These findings confirmed the potential of synovial fluid concentration in diagnosing joint health. These findings also asserted the utility of ML techniques, such as k-means clustering, in medical data analysis
