    Amplitude Method to Detect Debonding for Stack Bond Adhesive

    A numerical method was developed to detect debonding (crack initiation) condition during fatigue testing of an adhesive joint with thin steel sheets in standard configurations of coach peel and lap shear specimens. The goal is to establish the relationship between the sample's vibration behavior and initial failure condition, this relationship can be used to develop fatigue S-N curves for the adhesive under geometrical configurations of either coach peel or lap shear specimens. This method focuses on the continued monitoring of the specimen's vibration status by transferring the wave form data (in time domain) to a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) process and obtaining frequency and amplitude data (in the frequency domain), these data are then processed to identify the critical events such as debonding (crack initiation), crack propagation and total failure with associated cycle counts for each event. The amplitude output files were used to analyze the progression of different stages of failure for the samples under cyclic loads. Video analysis of failure modes was utilized to identify the different types of damage matching the cycle count based on time scale (frames) for each stage: ANSYS models were generated to provide supporting evidence in terms of change in natural frequencies and amplitude due to change of internal stiffness of the specimens.     Cardiac rehabilitation in children with congenital heart disease: exploring dance as an exercise modality and barriers to exercise for this population

    Heart disease is widespread and complex. Acquired heart disease is the number one killer of Americans and congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect. An important aspect of living with heart disease is participating in regular exercise, at least 150 minutes per week for adults and around 60 minutes per day for children. Most Americans do not come close to meeting these guidelines. One way individuals with heart disease can achieve their exercise is through a cardiac rehabilitation program. A hurdle to overcome with cardiac rehabilitation is the high dropout rate due to a variety of factors, including lack of variety in programing. The first project below explores utilizing aerobic dance as a modality of exercise during cardiac rehabilitation with children. A 30-minute dance class was completed with children without heart disease to establish a control and for safety considerations. Utilizing guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for moderate intensity, the 45 participants, aged six through 10 years old, all fell within the guidelines for both heart rate reserve and percent of age predicted maximum heart rate. These results demonstrate that this aerobic dance protocol is moderate intensity and is a potential mode of exercise for use within cardiac rehabilitation. The other project aims were to determine why children with CHD are not meeting the established exercise guidelines. Participants completed an 18-item survey to report their barriers to exercise. The most common barriers came from external factors, with the highest reported being “the weather is too bad”. Another highly reported barrier was “I don’t have enough energy”. Low energy level has been historically noted in persons with CHD. The tool used was reliable within the sample population, but the validity is lacking, and further validation in children with CHD is a prospect for future research. The results of this study may aid in determining how to create exercise interventions for this population. Overall, these two studies fill gaps in the literature of exercise in children, CHD, and pediatric cardiac rehabilitation. They also provide a foundation for many future studies

    You Can’t Tell It, Let Me Tell It: Making Sense of Belonging by Exploring the Lived Experiences of African American Students at a Predominately White Institution

    African American students make up approximately 13.1% of all students enrolled in postsecondary institutions across the United States (Hanson, 2023). African American students overwhelming, approximately 68%, attend public institutions. Further, approximately, 72% of African American students are enrolled at 4-year institutions. African American students enrolled at these institutions face challenges that their peers who are not African American do not, such as feelings of isolation, microaggressions, and less-than-welcoming campus climates. These factors often prevent African American students from fostering a sense of belonging to and on their campuses. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the theory of Double Consciousness as theoretical frameworks, this study sought to evaluate the sense of belonging of third-year undergraduate students enrolled at a Predominately White Institution (PWI). Further, my dissertation sought to uncover the effect, if any, student engagement had on developing sense of belonging for the study participants. This study aimed to examine African American students' engagement in extracurricular activities that may foster their sense of belonging in PWI. Data was collected via a pre-interview survey, followed by seven 1-hour semi-structure interviews with 31 participants. This study identified four themes: Campus Climate, Student Engagement, Belonging, and Why Am I Still Here. The findings showed that race had a significant impact on the participants' sense of belonging and the activities they were able to engage in on campus. Despite the challenges they faced, the participants showed resilience and motivation to persist. The study concludes with implications for higher education professionals and recommendations for future studie
