The therapeutic effects of a high velocity resistance training intervention for chemotherapy induced polyneuropathy
No full textChemotherapy induced polyneuropathy, also referred to as chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a dose dependent, neurotoxicity from known neuropathic agents, such as taxanes, platinums, and vinca alkaloids, causing damage to the peripheral nervous system which sends signals between the central nervous system and the body. CIPN can present as sensory, motor, or autonomic symptoms, such as paresthesia, hyperpathia, hypoesthesia, muscle weakness, balance impairments, orthostatic hypotension, or altered sexual function. Currently, there are no standard treatment or standard prevention methods for CIPN. The purpose of this case series was to assess the therapeutic effects of a high velocity resistance training (HVRT), or power training, in women diagnosed and treated for cancer, who presented with CIPN by measuring balance, functional performance, neuropathy, quality of life (QoL), and an inflammatory biomarker (c-reactive protein [CRP]). The HVRT consisted of 24 exercise sessions over 12 weeks including upper and lower extremity movements. The intensity prescribed was 30-60% one repetition maximum for upper extremity, and 0-60% one repetition maximum for lower extremity exercises. Findings demonstrate the feasibility of designing and implementing a HVRT intervention to potentially attenuate CIPN symptoms. Moreover, HVRT may improve in balance, functional performance, and QoL outcomes. Although the CRP results increased, the values remained within normal limits (Quest Diagnostics, n.d.), thus lifestyle modifications are needed. This study provides encouraging evidence for a future HVRT intervention pilot study modulating CIPN symptoms. Assessments such as balance, functional performance, and inflammatory markers should be measured prior and throughout treatment in persons receiving known neuropathic agents to better establish baseline values. Creativity in professional counseling: creative professional counselors’ perspectives
No full textThe study of creativity has been a far-reaching research interest in many industries for over a century. The study utilized a grounded theory approach to explore the depth and perception of creativity within counseling. Limited research focuses on licensed professional counselors who are in practice and use a creative approach as part of their counselor identity. Reviewing several meta-analyses, the literature suggests that counselors in practice participate the least in counseling research. This qualitative study adds uniquely to the counseling literature that focuses on counselor approaches and methodologies. This study concentrated on the direct perception of the professional counselor’s creative approach, the development of their creative identity, and the meaningful processes that occur within their counseling relationships in practice. Twenty-one participants met the criteria and were interviewed to learn about the counselors' perceptions and ensure their voices were heard. The results of the study led to the development of a new theory for Expressive Counseling. The implications for counselor education and training and areas for future research are provided
Supporting the Literacy Success of African American Students with Religious Literacy Programming

Grounded in Critical Race Theory, the research seeks to unravel the structural complexities that contribute to the academic achievement gap faced by African American students. The theoretical framework guides an investigation into the potential impact of affiliations with the Black Church on academic success, reading skills, and family literacy needs. The study draws on a comprehensive literature review and a culturally relevant literacy intervention aligned with the Black Church. A unique family literacy book club, incorporating culturally relevant Biblical texts, serves as a focal point for exploring its impact on children’s attitudes and beliefs towards literacy. Findings suggest that aligning interventions with the Black Church significantly improves academic success, with CRT revealing structural barriers that can be addressed through strategic partnerships. The study contributes to a nuanced understanding of literacy development within the African American community and highlights the transformative potential of collaboration and culturally responsive strategies. Implications for policy, practice and future research are discussed within the framework of CRT, emphasizing the need for systemic change to promote educational equity and justice
