Ambivalence Toward Technology in the Poetry of Robert Pinsky

    No full text
Rapid technological change affects humans in any era or culture, but increasingly in contemporary society. The subject of technology in Robert Pinsky’s poetry is clearly a topic for extended study. In his role as intermediary between the technological and literary cultures, Pinsky displays in his poems an ambivalence that reflects larger social attitudes toward, and philosophies of, technology. I intend to examine Pinsky’s role as contemporary poet by analyzing how his poems illuminate the current human condition, now inextricably linked to technological change. Pinsky’s deliberate ambivalence toward technology positions him as a gap mender as described by Stephen Jay Gould

Thinking about what it means to be a human being in the 21st century comes with many different aspects that one needs to take into consideration. Human Rights is becoming more complicated as life requires more in some areas and less in other as it proceeds. Clean air and water are one of those rights that every human being should have access to. When humans are denied access to those two, especially for political or class stratification reasons, a case of environmental injustice should be identified. Not everyone has equal access to all resources neither does everyone consume the same amount. The role of a government in a country is to make sure that they care and work enough to provide their citizens with all the needs necessary. When it fails to do so, a problem can be identified. In order to overcome that problem we need ideas and those ideas need to turn into actions that make a difference

The following paper presents an in-depth analysis of the effects of Monsanto on Indian farmer suicide rates from an Environmental Justice perspective. This case study intends to work through the continued injustice within Indian farming communities while examining the conditions in which this issue has been allowed to develop. Through an interdisciplinary lens, this paper aims to offer context on the situation by providing background information as well as integrating claims of morality. The paper highlights a close analysis of the issue through the incorporation of a multitude of resources such as scholarly works, news sources, social media, and works of literature. It displays the vitality of looking at issues holistically and investigating all aspects of a problem. Often neglected features of the injustice such as cultural awareness and societal differences are taken into account. Through this case study, it is made apparent that the well-being of Indian farmers is being disregarded as multinational companies such as Monsanto seek the highest profits imaginable. The work highlights the connects between the two and the claims made by both parties on behalf of the issue. Lastly, the work uses the crisis in India as a framework for a larger world problem in which free market capitalism places human rights beneath the acquisition of wealth

Gabriella Angeloni’s article, “Writing in Books: Lessons on New England Readers from the Ellery Library Collection,” gives us a window into eighteenth-century Newport readers through their private libraries

Miners, Moonshiners, and Men of the Mountains: The Effect of Violence in Central Appalachia Through the Reconstruction Era

    Get PDF
The United States, a nation once divided, was forced to reunite in the wake of the Civil War. While the rest of the country propelled toward industrialization, the rural region of Central Appalachia remained untouched and secluded. As Victorian society and industrialization broke into and invaded the Appalachian mountains, the lifestyle and traditions of the mountain people fell under scrutiny. The mining and moonshining industries, in addition to notorious family feuds and the ways of Appalachian life, became largely to blame for widespread violence in the region and, as a result, created stereotypes that are still widely used today

Cold Upset: How the American 1980 Olympic Hockey Victory Restored Patriotism in America

The 1980 Olympic hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States, is considered to be one of, if not the greatest upset in sports history. Occurring about eleven years prior to the complete fall of the Soviet Union, this victory was more than just a hockey victory, it was a victory for America. This win helped bring back hope into the hearts of the Americans, which they were lacking during the 1970s. The energy crisis that brought gas lines around the block and the Iran hostage crisis had disheartened the American public. This match up was basically seen as the communists against the capitalists. This Olympic victory for the United States sparked the utmost pride in the hearts of Americans
