Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: Youth, Seminary, and the Controversy at Lourdes
No full textThis study centers upon Teilhard de Chardin’s early formation as a Jesuit priest, trained in theology and trained in the sciences. Each of these areas contributed to Teilhard’s particular worldview, which placed God concretely at work in the natural order. Near the conclusion of his seminary training, Teilhard expressed this view in his published article on the healings at Lourdes. In this article, Teilhard confronted the prevailing scientific view regarding miraculous healing, proposed by the French medical doctor, Jean-Martin Charcot, with the countervailing position of the Roman Catholic church on the Lourdes’ healings. This opportunity to research and write on Lourdes provided him an entry to contemporary discussions regarding science and religion, in this case, miraculous healings. Teilhard’s thinking on the controversy at Lourdes revealed his assimilation of the scholarly exchange of professors and seminarians at Ore Place, Hastings, England – his last stage of theological training. The community at Ore Place represented a key stage in Teilhard’s developing theology. In this dissertation, I will delineate the factors of Teilhard’s early life which contributed to his formation as a person of faith and as a scientist, up until 1909 – the year he completed his article on Lourdes. To this end, I will discuss his familial upbringing and early schooling (Chapters 2, 3 and 7), the terrain of his geographical birthplace (Chapters 5 and 6), the specific context of Teilhard’s seminary training (Chapters 4, 8, and 11), the related secularizing policies of the French government in nineteenth and early twentieth-century France and some of the prevailing philosophical theories (Chapter 9), the responses of the Roman Catholic clergy to an increasingly secular Western society (Chapter 10), the prominent medical practice of Charcot, and the development of Lourdes as a site for miraculous healings (Chapters 12 through 16). In Chapters 17 through 18, I present a translation and explanation of Teilhard’s article on Lourdes which demonstrates an integration of his scientific studies and field work with his theological studies. In chapter 18, I identify an Ignatian perspective in Teilhard’s Lourdes’ discussion, derived from the Spiritual Exercises, as well as, connect his Lourdes discussion with Les Yeux de la Foix by his Ore Place peer, Pierre Rousselot. I conclude with a summary of Teilhard’s interpretation regarding the perspective of the Church and official science on the occurrences at Lourdes

No full textThis dissertation analyzes how Manuel Noriega learned from his predecessor, General Omar Torrijos, the strongman and ruler of Panama from 1969–1981, and followed in his footsteps. Through effective scheming, Noriega pushed aside other members of the Panamanian National Guard to become its chief; he then became commander in chief of the Panamanian Defense Forces and the de facto ruler of the country from 1983 – 1989. By leveraging military force, engaging in corruption, and committing human rights violations, Noriega sought to sustain his rule during 11 crises that threatened his hold on power. Niccolo Machiavelli\u27s book, The Prince , serves as a guide to judge the effectiveness of General Noriega\u27s decisions in each crisis. Several of Noriega\u27s decisions violated the advice Machiavelli provided in The Prince and these errors contributed to the general\u27s ultimate downfall

Digging the Dog: Anthropology and Archeology in Human-Canine Relationships and Encounters With the Sacred
No full textDespite the many medical, economical, and intellectual advances that technological proliferation has introduced into modern life, people perceive themselves as feeling acutely alienated from the sacred sphere. This study explores encounters with the sacred that people may experience in their relationships with dogs. Using anthropology and archaeology as a dual disciplinary system, dog artifacts are selectively surveyed, and using key questions regarding humanity and the technological, encounters with the sacred are placed into a more systematic framework, suggesting that they are not random, but rather part of a greater human pattern. The dog is explored both as a device, and as a bridge to the natural world. Five Positive Pathways are presented, rethinking the traditional hierarchy and acting as bridges along the human-canine divide. Canine companions are evaluated as focal things and as part of focal practices that have the capacity to center and engage the human individual with the richness of life. The dog is examined as connecting to the good life, and as a plausible alternative model of God in McFague’s scheme, which challenges the traditional Western view of God. Finally, ancient and contemporary cultural artifacts are identified and explored as providing openings for encounters with the sacred over time, and the human-canine relationship is viewed through the eight critical lenses of Spyker’s matrix, revealing new frontiers between technology and spirituality

Onorato not only highlights Mason Jr.’s significant architectural contribution to post-Civil War Newport, and later, Philadelphia, but also highlights Mason’s pioneering role in helping to establish the field of historic preservation and in nurturing the Colonial Revival movement among American architects and builders. Dr. Onorato is Chair of the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rhode Island
